Some apps wander around the wilderness for a while until they can find the perfect home. For Evernote, that home is the iPhone. The note-taking, picture-capturing, voice-recording, handwriting-recognizing universal memory service has been under development for years and launched last February in private beta on the PC. But it wasn’t until May 29 that it debuted on the iTunes store as an iPhone app. That’s when it started to take off.
Now Evernote has 512,000 registered users, who have created 13.8 million notes. In addition to the iPhone app, Evernote offers its service thorugh a PC client, a Mac client, a Website, and other mobile devices. The iPhone app is the most popular, being used 57% of the time. It is followed by the Web (51%), the PC client (32%), the Mac (28%), and other mobile clients bring up the rear (8%). These numbers add up to more than 100 because nearly half of all users access the service via more than one app.
The PC and Mac clients are the most fully-featured, yet it is the iPhone app that gave Evernote its critical mass. Perhaps that’s because the iPhone app lets you take pictures using the camera, append a note and save it to your Evernote page, where it is archived and searchable. It is more difficult to capture memories with a laptop.
Here is Evernote’s Elevator Pitch:

I might sound like an old timer but, I remember when I first beta tested Ever Note! It was great- I didn’t need a USB stick to transfer files from home to school and now work!
Now that I have an iPhone- I also have the EverNote app and love it!
Great to hear EverNote is doing well!
Cheers…
I second that one, I loved it since beta and I love it more with the iphone app. One of the most useful tools out there.
Evernote is a great service and I’m using it every day from home, work and mobile (not iphone).
I just regret that just like many services nowadays – they don’t offer enough security measures (it is impossible to encrypt entire notes).
With such multi functional capabiltiies, this graph is no surprise. Iphone users are more business minded.. isnt it?
Erick:
Evernote has been around for years as a purchasable product. This past February is not the first time Evernote was available. Here is a review we did way back in 2006 when it was known as Evernote Plus:
http://www.gott...ftware-inkshow/
Evernote is the best notes apps I have tried.
The feature that I would like to see added is the possibility to add attachments to notes.
Evernote is one of my most used tools (iphone, desktop, laptop and sometimes the web).
I am glad to hear it is doing well, I would be bummed if it went away.
the question is what percentage of that 500K registered users are actually active users? web 2.0 sites experience new user registration surges whenever they get mentioned on popular news sources. my guess for their active base is lower than 5% of registered users. evernote is a symbol of collapsing hopes and frustration among may users in my social circle.
Your social circle is not relevant, but your question is a good one. We need better stats before we can actually quantify popularity of evernote, or any tool or app out there for that matter.
great product.
however, when i first looked at it last year they had an INSANE privacy policy (of the bad kind).
deleted it immediately.
how does this compare with OneNote?
Imagine what their growth with a Blackberry app would be. I love Evernote but would pay for it if they had a BB app.
It is harder to develop because of the BB products vary from carrier to carrier but Google has a Sync product that seems to work on most if not all models. Just a thought
registration does not necessarily mean monetization. Yahoo has yet to monetize Flickr. Twitter? StumbleUpon? Cool Iris?
Eric where’s your analysis? Whats your take their actual revenue opportunity? Your piece is a press release. You should be ashamed.
With all your layoff tracking doomspeak I’d expect more intellectual rigor than this fluffy regurgitation of pr talking points.
I am glad he is letting late adopters know about evernote, it is a great tool. IMHO of course.
I really like this app – but they HAVE TO look at http://www.skitch.com/ to fix their interface/useability.
Short cuts, and screen capturing tools and ui are far better in skitch. Also, I want the ability to hide the doc icon, and just have it sitting in the menu bar. Also – ADD ‘SYNC’ to menu bar… or the ability to sync automatically whenever you add a note.
The Evernote app is wonderful! I’ve used the beta version and all I can say is that it’s very handy in meetings, conventions, and seminars!
Another company that you guys should check out is a start-up called VingTalk from the Silicon Valley:
http://www.vingtalk.com/cpp
It’s still in beta, but VingTalk allows group and voice text messaging and features threaded messages!
While Evernote is great, I’ve been playing around with the beta of 3banana.com and dig it’s more streamlined interface.
cool, i’m taking part too
It’s a kindly little iPhone app. I think I’ll keep it.
I’ve honestky never needed the note apps on Android. Android has google calendar and copy / paste so screw that.
Glad to see that the tech stocks stablized at a new, new low today.
Have a great lunch everybody.

Can’t wait for this to show up on the BlackBerry. Like a previous poster said above, you could imagine how much higher their numbers would go if this occurred.
wow, i have been a diehard fan of Evernote for over 3 years now and now i cna have it in my iphone ttooo
. coool

This app rocks on iPhone! Really life changing! I write about it on okaythings.com
Evrnote is the best one I have ever used ,I started using recently its great .
That’s because the Notes function on the iPhone sucks.
Remarkable feat, and Evernote deserves it nonetheless
I love me some Evernote and use it daily. I’m excited for new future applications that might appear with API extension.
If I had to name one desired improvement, though, it’d be browser-accurate copying and rendering of webpages into notes. There is a lot of room for improvement in the ability to retain the original formatting and not deliver a disaster of tables.
On another note, can you guys do something about the comment spam on here? It’s getting ridiculous.
How does evernote compare to microsoft’s OneNote?
Their growth has already slowed to 12-14%. If I invested $13.5M + the recent round of $4M, I wouldn’t be that impressed. At the current pace, they won’t even reach 2M users until 2010. And I can’t imagine they’re making that much money with their revenue model, since all the best features are free.
You have to wonder if the investors are starting to get worried…
Evernote for the iPhone is a lifesaver! I just saw a really useful demo of it here: http://tinyurl.com/bck2w5
