We’ve received two reports tonight of users having their email notification settings on Facebook deleted. They were notified at login that there was a problem, and told to head over to the Notifications page to reset them.
At least one user is angry about it. The other (Simon from Ozmota), who sent the screenshot above, was more contemplative. He suggests someone simply forgot to back up a table before implementing an enhancement. I checked my account, and it’s fine.
Whatever happened, it’s a small embarrassment. The kind you see with young startups all the time. And Facebook, despite its massive growth, is still a young startup.

I also recieved this notification yesterday. And one day earlier I was warned that they might disable my account. They thought that I was abusing chat for spamming.
I had this and fixed it yesterday. Very strange.
However, things are back to normal now.
Hmm…. I lost my event invites I hadn’t yet RSVPed to this morning – anyone else seen that?
Facebook have just rolled out account verification outside of the US it seems as you can now enter the details of a non-US mobile (cell) number. Although was amused, when asked to select the country of my mobile operator, there was no “UK” as is the norm. I looked for Great Britain, still nothing. Finally, found it under England… as much as some people might want it to be, England is not an independent country, and neither does it have its own dialling code.
Anyway, given the amount of data facebook collects, you think it would offer a person their home country as the default option…
I discovered this like a week ago, I was missing emails and saw that the settings had been reseted. This glitch has been floating for some days now. Glad they’ve notified it, although I had to figure it by myself
Same here, though I also filed a bug report at the time. Looks like enough people did that or posted on the forum to get the issue more attention.
this definitely happened to me, but I didn’t get a notice about it. I ended up resetting my password becaus I logged in and after 2 days realized my fbook bacn wasn’t pouring in as usual. I thought my acct was hacked.
Facebook have problems with the posted links algorithm! I put just one link in one group and I was warned! It’s too exaggerated!
Very confusing!
Angry? Over having to reset a couple of settings for a FREE website? Geez, perspective please.
Agree. Freeism… it is good but it also results in people losing their perspective.
I got this too and was wondering what caused it. Actually I was wondering about the look that must have been on the face of whatever hapless engineer caused it.
It was a minor inconvenience that took about two minutes to fix.
Ya, Facebook is still yet to grow, it is undergoing alot of internal updates and this might be as a result of that. http://www.youtechno.info
Yeah, i noticed this issue about a week or so ago when I stopped getting updates on my facebook blackberry app which relies on these notifications…
Yaa… i also noticed it….
Thanx.
When I first read this alert, I though it said “…sorry for the incompetence.” Would have been much more appropriate.
let me also check my facebook till now i have not get such message on my facebook profile page
My cynical side first thought that they reset all the settings to “Opt-Out” so that they could increase traffic because people like myself, with minimal notifications, will be sucked into visiting more often.
But it sounds like the opposite =)
I’ve seen a fair share of glitches in my FB account as well as intermittent db errors (and of course lots of app errors). But glad to see the reporting here was balanced. IMHO, Facebook is simply the highest quality web service and web software in existence relative to what it does. It’s incredibly fast and clean, almost Google quick, which is amazing considering the incredibly complex experience and set of connections and plug-ins that go into each unique >1b FB accounts and experiences.
The notifications reset isn’t a big deal. But I disagree that facebook is a “young startup” at all anymore. It has some 700 employees and Billion dollar valuations and has been around for more then 4 years now all the while with the lack of a solid revenue plan.
Mike, how do you qualify a company as young vs mature?
yep. Happened to me too. notification settings were simply turned to oFF
Happened to me – settings stayed the same. But the interesting part was that the link in the message to the settings page was incorrect … had to find my own way there in the end.
Happened to me like a week or two ago. I just noticed I was getting wall posts without an email. Went in and saw that all of my notifications were turned off and redid them.
No big deal.
Fb suddenly announced that my status was “now married” out of the blue a couple weeks ago (my status hadn’t changed in over a year)…
I’ve also noticed severe performance issues while browsing pix albums…
Fb appears to be testing PHP to its limits…
Happened to my account too (France). Fixed it.
I noticed this, maybe a week or so ago. I just went into my notifications and turned them back on. I wondered why my BlackBerry stopped sending me notifications. Some thought it was because they updated the app version to 1.3. Wonder what took them so long to get this problem out in the open?
I noticed this a week ago. I figured there was just a small DB problem on Facebooks end. I re-configured my email settings and forgot about it.
delete from email_notifications;
whops!!
i didnt notice it because i have no facebook account.
LOL!!
Wow, talk about breaking news! A user preference got reset for some accounts. OMG!
Definitely, this deserves a front page story on TC!
sorry sean. I forgot to mention in the post that getclicky has user translated versions of the service just like facebook. i promise i won’t mess up again.

lol
um doesn’t myspace post these notifications everyday? LOL
Mine were turned off across the board as well, since last week, no notice or warning, had to re-select notifications…
this happened to me too, just a small glitch thats all!
Oh btw

Hmm.. well, this explains why I haven’t been getting my email notifications… but I didn’t see this when I logged in this afternoon.
But hey, nobody and nothing is perfect. Not even Facebook.
I had the same problems.. But I appreciated the fact that whan I went to the notification page..the were all set to “no” (like I probabl left them)
I actually thought that this was Facebook’s attempt to get me and millions of others to put the email notifications back on.
Finally I got it as well, and not like Smirne, most of the notifications were set to ‘YES” (unlike I had probably let them)
Yeah I missed the notice, but for a while haven’t been receiving emails on friend requests/event invites etc which I had set. A bit irritating as I missed a few things.
I am getting 1 out of 10 email notifications from one person – NONE from others. I have to check and scroll the whole board to see if someone has posted. I have reset my setting – this is aggravaint – PLEASE ADVISE (May 14, 2009)
