When I think of Blackberry users, I think of accountants, lawyers and anyone else who wears a tie and carries a briefcase. You know, really boring people. MySpace users, sorta the opposite.
But there must be some significant overlap, because 400,000 people downloaded the MySpace Blackberry application in the last week, says MySpace - it was launched on November 12.
Both RIM and MySpace say this is a record - no other application has been downloaded so quickly onto Blackberry devices, and MySpace has never had an application on any platform be downloaded as often.
MySpace also says that 15 million messages have been sent and received via the mobile app, and users have updated their mood and status more than 2 million times.

See all

We’ve seen a pretty huge overlap between posts of our Flash widgets on Myspace and users signing up with a Blackberry handset.
Goes against the gut feeling, but just goes to show the gut isn’t always right. *shrug*
2 dominant social networks in each country is the rule, and u can reach any person of that country if u search in those 2 social networks.
Myspace of all things!! Facebook would have been understandable, but myspace? I thought only 15 year olds and hippies used myspace.
You are right. I think the fact people overlook is that there are a lot of teens who own blackberries. I am a substitute teacher and see them all day long in the middle schools.
MySpace is full of spammers
Well I’m betting the Facebook for Blackberry app is at or around that same mark.
free has a lot to do with it
I think it’s because of the delusion you and the rest of the tech crowd has been living under for the longest time regarding Myspace. The fact is Americans use Myspace a lot more than Facebook. Pretty sure the numbers bear this out, yet TC readers seem to think that Facebook is used more.
Facebook for Blackberry has been around a long time and is definetly lacking and clumsy to use.
I’ll stick with the Facebook app, though they have been slow to add features. You still can’t comment on someone’s status, etc.
Still, I’ll take it over Myspace any day.
not only does myspace have 35MM more monthly users than facebook, but you look at who’s buying these cool new blackberries lately - it’s the kids, fashion-conscious, trendies. that’s the myspace demo folks. blackberry has rapidly evolved into a consumer powerhouse.
agreed.
reading techcrunch its easy to feel that iphones are the end all, and blackberry is just a cute business class product. i’m in a top university and i’d say the breakdown among 20 year olds is 85% blackberry 15% iphone. the whole east coast is blackberry. most of america is myspace.
arrington’s buddies are iphone and facebook, so that’s what the rules are in the TechCrunchUniverse
….oh and twitter too. basically no one in new york that doesn’t actively follow startup tech has heard of it.
tons of the 13-17 year olds use blackberrys - they love BBM and its very sticky - iphone cant do it etc- my daughter must have a bb - i bought her an iphone and she begged to keep her BBM - bbm is a teen cult !!!
The argument that BB users are just a bunch of supposedly uncreative biz types is clueless to begin with but it is funny to hear this. I had the same experience - gave my daughter my old iphone and though she liked it she ended up asking for a curve!
When I think of iPhone users, I think of people with smaller fingers than me - I can’t type on that thing!! Which is why this creative guy uses a Berry…
These numbers boils down to the apps themselves. Facebook apps on Blackberry fails in comparison to Myspace apps thus, more myspace users, but if facebook fix thier app, i’m quite sure things will be alot different!
Oh btw

Yesterday night I discovered the myspace icon on my blackberry. I really have no idea how it got there. I do not remember downloading it…
Lately I’ve seen A LOT of college-aged girls with blackberries.
haha! As in creepy old men pretending to be college girls on MySpace?
Love it.
In Los Angeles I see as many Blackberries as iPhones among the hipster/entertainment set, the same people who formed the original userbase for MySpace. There seems to be a trend toward iPhones as old Blackberry service plans age out.
“You know, really boring people. MySpace users, sorta the opposite.”
glass houses, stones, pots, kettles, black, etc!
yeah, you thought wrong Michael. I love my iPhone, but i actually use my Blackberry more - maybe its the keypad, i dunno, i just do
I can see why this is surprising to TC. As an avid reader one can only take so many facebook and iPhone posts, especially about apps that have really no value. I guess we get used to lack of BlackBerry posts because its a Canadian company on TC. Im a crackberry addict and have both fb and myspace accounts I must say the myspace app is much more intuitive and the photo album viewer is very slick!.
BlackBerry is already the business mobile leader. What is amazing to think that its about to be the consumer mobile device leader. Stats like this really start to confirm this.

Michael, you will be pleased to know that we are helping with relieving the suits of their briefcases. At Exsafe with the Blackberry version, the user has access to all of their office content- documents, spreadsheets, notes, pdf etc, via our secured and managed store in the cloud on the Blackberry anytime, anywhere. No more lugging of laptops around! Open to suggestions on eliminating the ‘Tie’

I really dont understand how this comes as a shock to anyone. Myspace is way more used than Facebook will ever be. Facebook is more professional but Myspace is way more fun and way more addicting. Hell, I was waiting for a Myspace app from the moment that I bought my Blackberry.
The proof is in the pudding why do you think they have a record label and all tv shows, musicians, movie stars, etc, etc all have Myspace pages? It’s the easier better social network.
I don’t think this is a surprise. BlackBerries have slowly but surely (and quietly) infiltrated the consumer space. I would bet that the huge majoirty of owners of Pearls are not business folk. (i think the Curve is probbaly half and half).
And with the Storm being released, a new Curve around the corner, the pearl flip that recently came out…we’ll probably see more of this.
I just hope to see blogs like TC and others actually pay attention to this. I’m tired of the articles of useless iPhone applications. I want to read articles of useless BlackBerry applications damnit!
I don’t like to download any application because of limited memory of phone. I’ll prefer a web application like http://fonet.mobi which has lots of features and I can access the web site either from phone or desktop browser. I always goes to myspace mobile site.
Are you kidding??.. myspace is probably the most uncool site I can name… it sucks donkey balls
Haha this doesn’t surprise me, I caught my accountant on myspace on a slow day!
