Tag Your Baby, Pick A Name
by Michael Arrington on November 17, 2008

Forget the printed books and cluttered sites like this one, you can now pick your new baby’s name in style. Two year old Jackson Fish Market’s newest site is What A Lovely Name. Peruse and click on descriptive tags and see names that reflect those traits.

For example, English, Elegant, Intelligent and Wise yields twenty-six boy names:

You can also see what any individual name means:

  • just don’t call me ‘motrin.’

  • Wish I had this site when my son was born. I spent way too long deciding on a name. I wonder if they have variations on spelling? That would be useful.

  • Very nice interface. I’m a little curious as to how they’re coming up with some of the descriptions (”Liza” is athletic apparently) but overall it’s definitely worth a look. The Celebrity names list is very complete, although I’d the less-pretty but effective Celebrity Baby Name Generator at Generator Land.

  • “Michael is well known as God’s closes archangle”

Archangle? What angle is it? 73 degrees? And closes? God closes an angle and names it Michael?!

Come on people, proofread your stuff!

  • As expected this site is terrible. Sorry — add them to the deadpool!

    • DEAR FRIEND,

I AM MR. DENYS MARTIN, A BANKER IN ONE OF THE REPUTABLE BANK IN BURKINA FASO. I HAVE DECIDED TO CONTACT YOU ON A BUSINESS PROPOSAL OF AUS$10.5M (TEN MILLION FIVE HUNDRED THOUSAND UNITED STATES DOLLAR). THE DEPOSITOR OF THE SAID FUND DIED WITH HIS ENTIRE FAMILY DURING THEA IRAQ WAR IN 2006. THE DECEASED CUSTOMER USED HIS WIFE AS THE NEXT OF KIN BUT UNFORTUNATELY, THE WIFE DIED ALONG SIDE WITH HIM LEAVING NOBODY FOR THE CLIAM.THIS MY EMAIL MARTIN_DENYS02@YAHOO.COM

  • The video is hilarious! The app’s cute and fun but the name choices are limited and some classifications are inaccurate (Abdul is not a Hindu name). They need to add sort options to make it easier to find the ‘perfect’ name instead of having to scroll through hundreds of choices. It would be a good addition to some baby-related site.

  • Mark Hendrickson Amber Alert! - November 17th, 2008 at 1:27 pm PST

    Mike:

Have the Bolivians finally kidnapped Mark Hendrickson?

    Have you eaten him?

The People Have a Right to Know!

  • Doesn’t work for me. Has problems with visualizing symbolic operators such as “and” and “or”.

    Is fail.

  • Why would you want to choose a trait and then view the names? Would you know your baby is going to be athletic before it is born?

  • Are you suggesting that Prisciliana (with variations) would be a good name for my son? A quick google suggests that it is a very rare girls name. And it is Latin.

  • The site is beautiful and functions great, but who decided to add those names to the database? Some of those names were terrible!

  • Hi, my name is …, my name is …

Alala Astevan Dáithí Estaván Esteban Esteben Estefan Estefon Estiban Estifan Estovn Gerard Gerrard Gwenyth Istevan Jerrard Junia Laisrian Lasairian Martin Martyn Maur Moris Roman Zelda

    I’m athletic, strong, and romantic.

At least 10 of the examples above for the trio of traits selected are kind of (very) odd. Nice app for finding a name outside of the mainstream I guess.

  • I was excited about the article (as we have our baby in the next couple of months), but when checking the site itself, I must say that I am not that impressed… So, not a winner yet.

  • Picking a name for your offspring is really hard. I mean it really is. Not like you have 9 months to think about it or anything.

This is so news worthy I can’t even begin to fathom what else you guys might be writing about.

Way to uncover the ‘gem of the day’

  • I got quite excited reading this as my son is due literally this week and we’re very indecisive about what to call him. Site looked beautiful too, but seriously unless I’m doing something wrong the names are just plain weird.

  • People will visit this site for fun - fun in selecting tags and then viewing names. However it is not practical.People have diferrent requirements for names, and most of the time you go by the sound of the name, and then see if the meaning is within the range.

  • The idea is exciting but my review of the site shows serious shortcoming in user experience and execution on Jackson’s strategy. Full review here: http://tinyurl.com/6rymul

  • Sick.
I never knew that “Abdullah” is a Hindu name O_O
    Good idea though!!

  • wow, this site is really horrible. it looks like they threw it together in a day. while do i have to scroll three pages to see all the dispositions? did somebody forget float: left? horrible, horrible, horrible.

  • Nice interface just poor implementation. Rate 3/10

  • It’s nice they included Indian names also ,this site does help in finding names for babies thanks Techcrunch

  • Pretty cool, but I still like http://babynamey.com better.

  • This would be better if it pulled in census data and displayed the popularity of the name based on how many babies were given that name in a particular year.

  • Taggen statt Taufen (DE)

    Tag instead of baptizing (EN)

    New motto for 2009 ;)

  • it works! I picked independent and cute because my baby is both and they suggested his name. very interesting.

  • Cool design + Lame content = Lame website!

The names JUST DO NOT MAKE ANY SENSE!!!! It is somewhat annoying too that I can’t find names that are Indian and American when I personally know 50+ Indian Americans who are Neils… come on JFM! I am a huge fan of yours but can you at least make something that is actually useful as opposed to just pretty… which this isn’t either

  • Honestly…even though I know they probably spent some time on development. The end result is just garbage “smoke and mirrors.” Honestly just try using it.

  • The design is super-sweet, there’s no denying that. unfortunately, most of the names are closer to nonsense than useful.
