Google’s search-by-voice application is finally available on the App Store. To grab it, visit this link (the page still shows the old version, but you’ll download the new one). The application was originally announced on Friday, leading to widespread excitement that quickly turned to unrest as the application failed to make its debut on the App Store. The delay led to criticism of Apple’s App Store approval process, which apparently leaves all developers in the dark - even Google.
The app allows users to speak into their iPhones to submit queries to Google’s search engine, which can serve up both standard search results as well as movie showtimes, addresses, and other handy information. Voice detection seems to work pretty well, though it sometimes takes a few tries with long phrases and names (I was able to correctly search for the “answer to life, the universe, and everything” after only two tries). And when it works, it’s really cool - I’ll probably be using it on a daily basis.
My biggest issue with the app is that there is apparently no way to use the voice detection feature to call a contact, despite the fact that you can search through contacts using manual text entry. One of my biggest gripes about the iPhone is that there’s no way to make a hands-free call, and while this would still require at least one buttonpress, it would be an improvement. A free application called Say Who offers voice dialing on the iPhone, but it would have been nice to see the functionality integrated into the Google app.

Did anyone try searching for ‘Dealyzer’?
Not yet, but this is working out pretty good so far!

Wonder if you can add punctuation to your search query for this application?
this thing wins at life!
One word:
FANTASTIC
Installing it now, already had the app, it didn’t show up in the App Store Updates, had to delete it, then install the app again.
Then turn on voice search in the settings menu.
A killer app for the iPhone!
ok, tried using the app a few times now, the voice recognition on the google iPhone app is horrible.. trouble with the australian accent ??
Oy dowt they ‘ave a bloke at Google oo c’n speak Strine!
I tested it out and just finished writing a post about it. Overall, it’s fun and functional. It will definitely change the way I search on my phone.

People don’t do research on an iphone. They do it on their desktop or notebook or UMPC. I found some voice recognition software named Tazti speech recognition that actually is a free download and performs voice searches of Google, Yahoo, MSN, Wikipedia, Amazon, eBay and many other websites. It also lets me log into and navigate Facebook and Myspace by talking to my PC. tazti also lets me control my iTunes music player bu talking to my PC. It really works well. I guess if I want to find a supermarket or pub I can use iPhone Google speech recognition.
Here’s the Tazti youtube demo video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C1tt_aeIAM8
tazti is a free download from http://www.tazti.com
Stop Trolling! I’ve seen this same post (or a variation thereof) on every website talking about this app. We get it. You work for Tazti.
This dude is posting this under every article about this application. He must have “found” the software on HIS website. Clever but annoying ad.
just kill yourself!
Like many applications (e.g. Google Earth and most games) this application is nowhere to be found on the South African Store. I can understand why we don’t have iTunes, but why on earth does Apple need to selectively disable certain applications for South African iPhone users.
For those who don’t know, South Africa has a very advanced cellular network, we have had 3G and better technology much longer then most locations.
When clicking on link you get “Your request could not be completed - The item you’ve re quested is not currently available in the South African Store” …. Why? …. What makes us different?
Did they roll back the latest update? I don’t see the voice recognition at all.
…fail for not reading the entire entry.
I have wondered about this app too. I am from the UK and have done several different searches but can’t find it. Has it been pulled or is it just for the US? I’ve read the full entry and there’s nothing there that remotely addresses this question
We’ve had our fair share of dealings with the approval process.
My biggest gripe is the fact that you receive rejection notices one by one rather than a line-item list detailing each issue. Sometimes these notices can take upwards of a week to receive, and 3-6 week approval waits are not uncommon. If you’re rejected two or three times, you’re looking at close to a month+ of senseless waiting.
I believe their current method is hugely inefficient in addition to adding an extra 20-30% congestion to the approval process. I do like the fact that there is a process though, it just needs to be rethought.
Dunno, IMO using Google Maps on the phone for local listings is much more functional. And it’s a little silly that you speak “images Obama” or “news Obama” and it brings you to the web tab, and not automatically to the images or news tab.
Gripes, and granted the voice recognition worked well, but it seems like more of novelty to me than something I’d use frequently.
Yeah, I think there’s a lot of work that can be done, but it seems like the hard stuff (voice recognition) is out of the way. Now Google just needs to make the app act on commands rather than simply sticking them in the search query.
my biggest complaint isn’t voice dialing, its the battery life, or the lack thereof.
it’s not perfect but it works good
We developed Visual shopping engine such as Like.com.
Launch affilliate services in ShoppingSite!!!
Our website is http://www.Lookeey.com
It doesn’t understand a thing I say. :..( It could be because I have a southern accent, but then again, Jott understands me just fine. Maybe it would help if they added dialect options like Dragon Naturally Speaking speech recognition software has. DNS works just about perfectly for me.
I have noticed that the voice search basically does not work when you don’t have 3G. It works like a dream on WiFi but without 3G it has not recognized any of my search terms at all.
Not sure why that is a problem over the EDGE network.
Best !
Definitely nice feature.
