Quick Draw: Addictive Online Pictionary Heads To The iPhone
by Jason Kincaid on November 10, 2008

It seems that the tide of the App Store is finally starting to shift, as more developers look to tap into the iPhone’s online connectivity in an effort to separate their apps from competitors’. The latest app preparing to join the fray is Quick Draw, a Pictionary-like game that allows iPhone users to play eachother online using the phone’s WiFi or cellular networks. The app is similar to iSketch and XSketch (covered here), throwing a handful of players into a room and choosing one of them as the ‘drawer’ while the rest frantically try to guess a keyword. And if Quick Draw is half as addicting as those sites, it likely has a hit on its hands. The app is currently in beta testing, with plans to appear on the App Store within the next two weeks.

Last week we took a look at a pair of other iPhone applications that are leveraging the iPhone’s network effect to get a leg up on competitors: Chess With Friends is an asynchronous chess game looking to capture the addictiveness of Facebook’s mega-hit Scrabulous, and Smule’s Ocarina allows users to listen to music being played live around the world.

Here’s an unofficial video of QuickDraw in action (it was put together by one of the beta testers):

  • Great…currently I use Scribble to save paper while playing Pictionary. This one is more sophisticated with the wi-fi capabilities…should be fun when it comes out :)

  • I never understood – how do these Pictionary games prevent the drawer from simply writing out the answer?

    • There’s no programmatic way to stop it, but in the case of iSketch, users get a “whistle” button. if enough people click it, it ends the current artist’s turn. Technically players would benefit from NOT clicking but it’s more fun to play the game the right way so usually people play by the rules.

  • Pretty cool… although seems to have some usability issues … It would be cool if there is a way to call conference in :)

  • Fun little app, I’ll defiantly grab it when it hits the app store. I can’t say I’m thrilled about the video, though.. and am confused about how a tripod could be “gay”..

Regardless, it looks like a fun app and its good to see applications get more and more interactive and global, really utilizing the iPhone for what it was made for.

  • It is really cool to see the iPhone apps get more sophisticated – using the network – and becoming more location based. I just downloaded Urbanspoon (the commercial worked) and have decided it is cool – even though I haven’t really followed a recommendation yet… I just wonder when the network will finally catch up. It still seems like it takes way too long to do basic things like get my e-mail delivered…

  • there is a review of this app on youtube, and i found another app similar to pictionary which seems to be much better than this and has all the things Quick Draw does not have. The other app is called “Guess What?”, i like this app it has the feel of drawing on a slate, pretty cool

This is not an online gaming app like quick draw but thats the whole point I like to play pictionary with my friends around me and not with some loosers online whom i dont know, its no fun

This is the review of Quick Draw
