Breaking Down The Election Season Minute-By-Minute
by Jason Kincaid on November 7, 2008

Now that the election is over there is going to be no shortage of punditry looking to pinpoint exactly what moments in the last 18 months contributed to Barack Obama’s victory over John McCain. No one is better equipped for this analysis than Auditude, the video fingerprinting company that was recently employed to power part of MySpace’s video platform.
Using a database chronicling millions of hours of video content, Auditude can identify the original source of video clips scattered across the web, even if they’re only a few seconds long. And with that, the company can figure out which speeches, gaffes, and ads actually mattered to The People.

For its initial analysis of the election, Auditude has mapped out the popularity of each moment in this year’s three presidential debates. Crawling across sites like YouTube, Veoh, MySpace, and Yahoo, the site isolated several thousand videos depicting portions of each debate, and then laid them out in a timeline to determine which moments were the most viewed.

Unsurprisingly, the majority of popular clips involved McCain gaffes and moments when Obama said something that was especially poignant. This bias can be attributed to Obama’s much stronger web presence, and a generally liberal bias on sites like Digg where videos tend to go ‘viral’ and garner millions of hits. That said, there’s still plenty of useful data to be found (for example, note that the infamous “that one” statement only had around half as many hits as McCain’s “Zero?” reaction in the third debate).

Below are charts for each debate, along with links to the highlighted clips:

the moment he picked that idiot governor from alaska mccain lost the race.

  • So they worked out that the most interesting moments where also the most popular. wow, im impressed….

  • Very cool. they tracked every video and compiled the views. can they predict any kind of popularity show?

  • Why DID McCain say “Zero?!?!”? I never understood it. He isn’t a stupid man; you can’t honestly tell me you think he was so stunned that he decided to show weakness on live television. Was he faking surprise because he thought people might distrust obama then?

  • Please. Election is over. Get a new hobby. Leave internet alone.

  • I already knew those videos were the most popular as it says so in the youtube views. Duplicate videos won’t change that percentage alot. So this is an interesting idea but really nothing revolutionary.

  • McCain lost because he selected Sarah Palin who thinks Africa is a country.

  • How is this different than what Twitter does with trend/load graphs? And Twitter can do it immediately, not wait for shit to be uploaded.

  • The David Letterman cancellation was a low point and the katie curic interview for Palin. Obama never really had any bad moments. McCain committed mistakes that could have easily been avoided.

  • “That idiot govenor from Alaksa” has more executive experience than anyone else on the ticket including the present Messiah elected. More experience than anyone here has. Know your facts guys before you spout foolishness.
Also, 650 million dollars can go a long way towards buying an election.

    • How are you defining “executive experience”? How is it that you know that she has more experience than “anyone else here”? Despite Palin’s “experience” as an organizational leader, the state of Alaska has a smaller population than many American cities, and your comparing her to Senators? I agree that rattling off stupid remarks about someone’s idiocy does nothing to improve infallibility, but your attempts at sophomoric argument do not cover your veiled intolerant attitude, ignorance, or lack of a better thing to do on a Saturday afternoon.

Yes, money wins elections, and Obama had a chunk. But I would say that is because so many were willing to back him in the first place, and that is also how you win elections. The Republicans have known that for decades. Don’t be upset because the Democrats have just caught on.

I do so enjoy my Sunday nights.

  • Everyone now can visibly see the power of the Internet and we are still revolutionizing it.

  • One thought is that heavy watchers of video on on net (e.g. youth) probably skew towards Obama supporters, so analysis of what video was influential is skewed
