glad to see a comprehensive plan. I think the H1B support will make a big difference on silicon valley. I remember during my time at school, many international students don’t want to work for startups simply because it is harder to stay in the states.
also, better broadband and wireless! hopefully pave a way for the long delayed mobile platform?
Obama does not have the knnowledge nor the experience to run a country likes hes offering to. Believe it or not America is a giant business and Obama has no business experience, his others plans, like the plan to pull out of iiraq were clearly written for college students who dont think about what comes of a “good” idea.
Believe it or not, there is more to running a country than business and book balancing, as our failing PM Mr. Brown is rapidly proving with his “govern through economics” approach. Gordon Brown has years of economics experience and didn’t do too badly as Chancellor of the Exchequer, but look at how well he’s doing now, both politically and in general public opinion.
A country needs a generalist to lead it. Experienced advisors are there to provide guidance on specific areas. Surrounding himself with Clinton-era advisors is a good move by Obama.
I enjoy listening him talk about the utopia he plans to build. He is a dreamer and he would be great if the united states isn’t in red. Too bad the economy is in the crappers. I wonder how many of his campaign promises he can keep.
The amount of money we are bleeding in Iraq alone could fund all of these program. The amount of money wasted on failed defense projects could fund all of these programs. The increased taxes on the wealthy could fund all of these programs. This isn’t a utopia, it is the reality that you have ignored because you are so busy focusing on issue that don’t matter.
At this high level (President of a country, CEO, etc), it really is the vision that counts. It is alright if the final product is dreamy. Along the way, there will be many many by-products. A leader needs to be a visionary and be able to express the ideas, the little details will just happen.
no..kidding… Mike
Techcrunch is really going downhill lately…how much did Obama paid you to post this. McCain already came up with something like this. Where is the balance? …Unsubscribed
Hey Mike D. i think Mike A. did not post anything about McCain’s policy at the moment because perhaps there is nothing on his website. On the other hand on Obama website you can find that easily. Besides, by this time everyone should be informed and we all know that McCain plan is flaw when it comes to tech policies amongs other policies.
getting ourselves out of the war in iraq will give us enough money to go to the fukin moon again, 10 times over. everything he proposed costs peanuts compared to what were spending in iraq.
Well he reminds of Tony Blair when he was in the same position back in the Nineties with the only, and most significant difference being that Blair seemed to know his scripts apparently without having to read them from prompt cards.
Remember Tony Blair was good pal with Bush and Dicky so why don’t you save it. When Kennedy was president he set the goal to get to moon and we did. And being that he writes his own speeches i think it tells that he puts heart to them.
You always believe everything you read? Hey I got this friend who’s inherited millions of dollars in Nigeria. Can you help? I only need a photocopy of your ID and bank information…
Obama is a fraud, he will say anything, do anything to get elected and turn around and do NOTHING he promised. His history on the campaign trail is already littered with lies from ending the war in Iraq to accepting public financing.
He is a socialist to his core which is the polar opposite of a leader who would encourage technological growth and innovation. Obama is for the state and state only.
I hate when tech blogs get on politics, it’s like reading Chuck Schumer on the Linux Kernel.
True “socialism” is something no serious politician in the U.S. would ever think about ascribing to. All politicians sitting in the US are a shade of gray when it comes to this.
Are we to call McCain and the Republicans “socialists” for supporting more government intervention in the banking system? Is McCain a closet “socialist” b/c he hurried back to DC to help with the bailout plan? After all, it’s anti-free market and putting more control of the industry in the hands of the government.
No. Sometimes I feel that people are trying to dig up McCarthy and have another round of fun.
“I just love it when people parrot away cool words and lines just because they heard it on a campaign stump speech without even doing their research.”
That’s what you hear whenever you talk to a McCain supporter: empty, thoughtless, parroted rhetoric, repeated from Palin stump speeches and the Sean Hannity show.
Because socialist or not (I don’t care what label people slap onto a policy really), Obama IS a lier. The FACTS are there to check on: support for Bush’s 700 billion bailout, and even more inexcusable: FISA… Those are just the latest.
Obama supporters are about as brainwashed (technically more so since they actually had a brain to start) as the average McCain monkey.
we’re not an entirely capitalist market, sir. we’ve implemented form of socialism long ago: medicare, medicaid, social security, the $700bn rescue package last month, etc.
read a book for once and stop being spoonfed everything you hear and taking it for fact.
I like what he says…but where is all this money going to come from? McCain and Obama are both completely full of it.
The next 4 years are going to get worse no matter who wins, so the cynic in me says the democrats should vote for McCain so the Republicans take the heat.
Ya seriously. From a idealistic perspective, I’d be interested in how do we use the money we do have in a more efficient manner.
I feel that if the government and its programs were run with the same diligence, attention to facts and numbers, and project management skills as a lean corporation, it would have a much bigger impact on what can get done than just throwing more money at it.
The problem is that much of the smartest and brightest human capital know that the money is not to be made in public service. The ones that do jump from private sector to government tend to be in the Treasury Department, where some would argue the motives.
I bet the ones running the multi-billion dollar programs are lifelong bureaucrats.
And smart and bright lifelong academics don’t count as the type we need more of in public service. One look at the World Bank tells you what several decades of “thinkers” > “do-ers” can do to pervert a program’s mission statement.
You need people that can execute. And get more out of every dollar of taxpayer money.
I understand the want to run it like a business, but you can’t. The goal of a lean, strong business is to maximize profits. That shouldn’t be the goal of a government. Not to mention you want your government to be transparent – which isn’t always the case with private businesses. I remember being on a city council committee (I was a temp) a few years ago, and we couldn’t use e-mail to discuss matters because it violated the Brown Act. It slows down the process considerably – but somewhat necessary.
well not necessarily run like a business, but find some way to sweeten the deal for top public servants who -execute- well. i don’t have the solution for this. i’d go into public service if it wasn’t so terribly underpaying vs. private sector.
the leanest corporations are able to maximize profits so well often b/c of their human capital. capital one does so well in the card industry b/c their people are so attentive to facts and business cases and execution in a financial industry that is shockingly not driven as much by numbers and logic is it should (more by gut than you think).
If only there was some ongoing project costing, say, $100,000,000,000 per year… we could cancel that and be off to a flying start. And if that project was illegal, immoral, and an international disgrace, so much the better for cancelling it.
Personally, I find it doesn’t quite matter if you throw your vote away for the other guy, there’s not enough people that do it and none of the canidates really check who’s voting for non top two parties, let alone the media never covers them for thier various reasons. So in the end you just ended up voting for the other guy that didn’t get in office.
Well did anybody notice that he is giving this speech standing in front of Google logo.
1. Enforce anti trust laws ? will his administration stop Yahoo – Google deal
2. Will Google get tax credits because they will invest in energy technology?
3. Will Google get the contract from Government to setup the IT infrastructure for the government?
4. Provide universal broadband access – provided by Google funded wireless startups or Google itself
5. Electronic Medical Records – who will get this contract?
It seems more like Google’s future plan and they just bought the government with the ad/ information economy dollars akin to the old oil money.
How about breaking up Google into tiny companies based on services and level the playing field for other online services?
Let people who want to go deploy wireless networks, get other contracts, or build data centers and servers, do that and have the wealth actual spread itself then go through Google or “the one”.
1. Well yeah, duh! All this mergers do is take a bigger stake in the market while making perfectly good employees go away without a job.
2. Maybe, but this will be tied to making more job openings, investing in more “green” infrastructure or more R&D. By comparison, Microsoft would likely have such a tax cut because they invest a lot on R&D too. Americans have to see this as a Godsend because for the first time in a long time they are talking about creating American technologies with American resources (and maybe companies will stop sending your jobs overseas). You have to take into account that if you make less than a quarter of a million dollars a year, you will see a taxcut.
3. Google? Really? Are they in anyway infrastructure providers of some sorts? Let me rephrase that: From the top of your mind… Can’t you think of any infrastructure providers? Do you honestly think that Google is the only one capable of such a feat? Also, why would the US be behind Europe on things like this? We can agree that your government needs to be kept honest (that’s what transparency is for, right?). Why not offer you, the people, access to forms and such electronically? Welcome to the 21st century. (South Korea and Spain are already there AFAIK).
4. Universal Broadband Access provided by Google? I sense a trend here… Who would you say won the auction recently for the spectrum that would be likely used to do so? Not Google, as far as i remember it. He hasn’t said he will make you use “the one” broadband access. You would agree though that it’s a shame that in the US there are many places where many people cannot afford broadband Internet (schools, libraries and hospitals). If you can, by all means, get the best deal there is, but what if you couldn’t? Also, isn’t it better for you to get more broadband?
5. Electronic Medical Records… Wasn’t Microsoft working on this? Yeah, they are! They have been showing it to us for years now (from the really annoying guy that falls and might have broken a leg to the newest most cool incarnation that featured a GUI very much like the one that Gwyneth Palthrow uses on IronMan). Many companies have gone through a lot of R&D to make this a possibility. We can also agree that there needs to be a standard so that your medical records are available to you without minding if the hospital you are in uses Windows or Linux or Macs.
There’s money in the US. With the most current bubble bursting and the economy going down, don’t you feel relieved that at least one candidate says that it might be time to start investing it at home rather than overseas?
Foreign oil dependency is what matters most this days, would you like to have this happen all over again when you discover one day that you also depend mostly on foreign tech?
How else is the US going to compete against South Korea, Japan or India?
In any case, you are entitled to your opinions though, the important thing is that you go to vote.
@libertarian: The speech is in front of a Google logo because he delivered it in Googleplex. Some of your arguments against Obama are downright petty and stupid to put it lightly. I used to think “Americans” were very smart people, but then again, you guys elected George Bush….TWICE. This is the time to vindicate yourselves. Be wise!
PS: I do not actually mean all Americans. I am referring to the ones with very very STUPID arguments.
Hey there, sir, before you start bashing Americans (even the “very stupid ones”), why don’t you enlighten us on where you’re from and then we’ll talk about all of the things “stupid Americans” do for your country.
Oh, nevermind, I see where you’re from. Let’s put it this way, you don’t have any right to talk about “stupid Americans’ arguments.” Considering the fact that you couldn’t make it to work in the morning without IMF/World Bank stabilization programmes, I suggest you just keep your comments about Americans being stupid to yourself. Btw, I regularly work in Nigeria and love the country, but I can tell you firsthand your comments are off.
Is it fair to say that you took offense over his comments?
He just stated the obvious though:
Bush: Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.
Stupid Reasons: If one cannot articulate arguments intelligently then one might be stupid. One might not have the tools to express a point of view the best way (there are many that have valid opinions but might lack the proper education to express them correctly). But when you say something stupid, then you are acting like one (ok, not you personally, those who actually do it).
BTW, the fact that Nigerians need IMF/World Bank stabilization programs isn’t a factor that determines if Mr. Nwoye can or cannot have an opinion about any American, just like the fact that you being American doesn’t mean you cannot act stupidly sometimes (in fact, we all do, regardless of our origins).
In defense of Mr. Nwoye I’ll like to say there are Stupid Americans and unfortunately more than we need. The fact that you want to defend “Stupid Americans” makes you stupid by association at least that’s by McCain’s rules. So going about asking someone where they are from so you can criticize their place of living makes you even stupider because you can’t even come with a sound argument. Just because you can sound arrogant and think you are better than anybody from any other country does not make you to have better judgment than Mr. Nwoye.
I am not necessarily saying you are stupid or lack intelligence but I am being the devil’s advocate here. I’ll like to think you are a smart and intelligent person even thought not everybody that visits techcrunch is smart and intelligent. Next time I think you should try to see from a positive side of things, perhaps then you might get something out of it.
“The speech is in front of a Google logo because he delivered it in Googleplex”
duh… That would be his point… Let me dumb it down for you: Obama’s speech is pure demagogic crap to seduce the audience he’s talking to. It has nothing to do with what he’s going to actually do. For that you need to check the speech he made at AIPAC…
In response of all the people that think it is impossible :
except for the energy part and the forum participation for public debate, here in France we alredy have :
- broadband access for all
- all the laws that he wants to make about anti trusting system
- the legal business documents available online for free or a small fee,
- a medical record of all,
- an good education in high tech at school.
I tell you : It is possible. even the arrogant and lazy frenchs did it . Why not americans ?
Having this kind of system greatly reduces on a short period of time administrative costs.
Obama intends to bring Web 2.0 to D.C./administration/government.
It’s a shame that it takes 200 years to bring in order what Bush/Cheyney have destroyed in the past eight years (environment, national deficit, laws etc.).
I have given up the hope and therefore I spend my time watching “Who’s nailin’ Paylin”.
Republicans boast about America’s greatness and complain about Democrats’ pessimistic view of America, but then they take a cynical view towards any proposal of constructive national action. It’s not cost-effective for private companies to run broadband all over America, but if we don’t have such an infrastructure America will fall behind. We won’t be the go-to country for 21st century investment unless we do our job as a people/government and invest in infrastructure for the public good.
Obama has an appreciation of these issues that McCain doesn’t have. There are no good reasons to vote for McCain. The CEO of Google supports Obama – do you think he would do so if he thought Obama was going to “spread his wealth.” Despite McCain’s proposed tax rates for the rich, the people with the highest income and education levels support Obama. They’re smart enough to know that they will be better off if they sacrifice a bit of their personal wealth to the public good.
Short Republicans – We can spend hundreds of billions in Iraq, but we can’t invest in basic tech infrastructure in America.
Darth said: “”"They’re smart enough to know that they will be better off if they sacrifice a bit of their personal wealth to the public good.”"”
There were a lot of people in the early 20th century tucked away in a cold part of Asia/Eastern Europe who pushed almost the exact same concept. Good thing Americans (Republicans and Democrats) didn’t let this rubbish spread.
You miss the point. You say (any personal sacrifice)=socialism. I say that what looks like personal sacrifice ISN’T ACTUALLY PERSONAL SACRIFICE because the utility of the money sacrificed, even with respect to the taxpayer, is greater in the hands of the public.
For example, let’s say money needs to be spent on cleaning the air or laying broadband lines. The taxpayer gets a great deal because he could never get those things with his tax money alone, but if he puts some money into a public organization (government) he can get those things that are good for him on the cheap.
It’s dangerous to apply the label “socialism” to anything having to do with the public good. It’s McCain/Palin namecalling, not the public good, that is dangerous.
And Republicans buy into it hook, line, and sinker.
McCain doesn’t want to end the war. But the world will end. Yes, John, now I understand your “one more mission!”
I like his wife and daughter, though… he has a good taste, proven once again with Sarah Palin…
I really enjoyed the Bush tech policy of ██████████████████████████████ and then he leveraged
██████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████
███████████████████████████████████████████████████████████ tell by his approval ratings it’s been successful!
Darth (for some reason I can’t reply to your comment on the thread), I’m not saying “any personal sacrifice=socialism.” I’m saying gov’t mandated sacrifice in any form of redistribution of wealth is indeed socialism and it’s what the model was built on. The historical reference is just an analogy, nothing else. Personally, I don’t think Obama is socialist (even though some of his policies aren’t the most market efficienty, i.e., universal healthcare) as some have tried to label … your comment though was socialism spot on.
What you’re calling “government mandated sacrifice” is taxes, and what you’re calling “redistribution of wealth” is the progressive income tax. If it’s true that the progressive income tax is socialist, then Theodore Roosevelt, supposedly John McCain’s hero, installed socialism in this country and we’ve been socialist ever since. And if taxes are government mandated sacrifice then there has been government mandated sacrifice for as long as there have been governments. Taxes and Theodore Roosevelt preceded the rise of Socialism.
Universal healthcare actually is “market efficient” – I suppose you think it’s efficient to have massive private bureaucracies dedicated to denying service to those who need it most?
I’ll just respond to the healthcare comment … adopting a single payer model is exactly the same as socialized healthcare, as it is in Canada, the UK, France, etc. It is not efficient, and I can provide data ad nauseum showing how such a model would not be good for anyone – patients, providers, etc. This is my business – take my word for it or don’t, but I have data to back up my argument and examples of failed models in Europe/Canada to show how Obama’s plan is inefficient. Sorry to have gotten us way off the topic.
Mark: don’t know what kind of data you got but I’m French, have lived in NY for about 15 years. I have first hand experience of both French and US healthcare.
Without the shadow of a doubt, the French system is incomparably better, both in terms of quality and price.
Anyway, I don’t even know what you people are talking about since Obama doesn’t even support universal healthcare…
Whiskey, I’m not defending Bush in my comments nor am I saying he doesn’t have a right ot an opinion … I just don’t like those with plenty of their own problems who depend on the US for just about everything talking about how “stupid” we are.
Mr Mark, If you did not have guilt in your conscience, you would’t have taken offense. All countries have “stupid” people My country has “stupid” people so does yours. Every body behaves “stupid” at times, but the response after that is what matters.
As for what America, IMF,and World Bank have done for..sorry, to my country…I will ignore the politics and economic slavery going on against “developing” countries.
To the point: I find it amazing that people are aggressively defending McCain and urging him to be President. Throughout his campaign and now, all he has to say is why people shouldn’t vote for Obama. If he had any plans for America, he should have outlined it long ago. Obama has, and in this video said what he would do for the technology sector. What has McCain got to say? Even If I had nothing against MaCain, his choice of Palin (a beat away from the heart of a 72 year old man) as VP of the United States was the last straw. Imagine putting the security of the world in jeopardy just to win Hillary’s “18 million votes”.
Have a look at any of these and maybe you will see where I am coming from.
Why am I so interested in “your” politics? …..Because, whatever happens in America affects us all. I would rather not have it that way, but that is the reality.
Very Well Said Nwoye. I am an American and a Proud one at it, but the ignorance of people such as Mark that think that they cannot criticize America because they are so arrogant that they don’t see their faults. We as Americans must learn from our Mistakes and I see that if we were to elect McCain again then there is no hope.
His promise…I will create a transparent and connected democracy. Wow..you tech people should make a donation to his campaign…use a foreign credit card, use a fake name, fake address….see if it goes through. Then try it on McCain’s site. Then ask Obama to reveal, post it online all those that donated, IP addresses etc.
He wants to track earmarks…wow 143 days in senate asked for nearly $800 million in earmarks and now he is going to make others accountable?
The identities of his donors are public information pursuant to election law. And whatever earmarks he obtained has nothing to do with whether he will make information public as president.
I guess I have to spell this out to for you. Donors names under $200 are not required. The limit is $2300. Only US citizens are allowed to contribute this election.
Here is the fraud. Obama’s site has turned off all Address Verification Systems. AVS is a system used to verify the identity of the person claiming to own the credit card. The system will check the billing address of the credit card provided by the user with the address on file at the credit card company. The other security features for the credit card include the CVV2 number and the expiration date.
What does that mean? The Obama camp cannot refund the money if they are not sure where it came from.
You can make up addresses. You can make up names. You can even make a donation with a prepaid credit card. You can make a donations over $2300 using different names. You can make donations and not be a citizen of the US.
Yep. Spend the money now.
You are right…what ever he did in the past has nothing to do with whatever he will make others do in future….I think that is called hypocrisy.
you are a douchebag sir, Last i check when i use my credit card i just don’t submit any name i want, it has to be the one on the card. So i see not reason why you are spreading this bull&#i% about fraud. The problem is that since you guys are loosing and Obama has inspired millions to donate you can’t find any other means but to spread lies. If only McCain had run a honest campaign i think many people would be having a dificult time deciding who to vote for, but McCain has actually made it easy.
Did you even test it Nick? I think you see at https://donate....contribute/main it does not even ask for the 3 digit security code. That is the 1st level of security disabled.
2. You can enter any name or address. That is the second level disabled. Try it with $1. 3. You can enter any country, AA, and it accepts it. 3rd level disabled.
It accepts it. I just donated $1 to Obama. The name I entered: Adolf Hitler, 111 Reichstag, Berlin.
Tell me Nick…how is Barack going to return this money?
I love that we’re debating socialism in a medium created by the government, a medium which has its greatest broadband penetration in socialist countries.
He is Just reading a script. Remember, BHO has stated that he will raise taxes for everyone over $200K. Those are the people called ‘accredited investors’ who fund startups. When such people are taxed more, startup funding will diminish. Is BHO proposing to nationalize the telcos? Sounds like it to me. Kaiser has been experimenting with electronic medical records, for example. This is not new. McCain mentioned it himself initially. All of this speech is just platitude one can read in blogs. Let’s see a pie chart of tech startups per country. I would bet that the over-taxed socialized EU countries don’t come close to the USA per capita. Perhaps Techcrunch could provide such charts for its readers.
Whatever the issue of this presidential election, one can be sure that all American will end up supporting their President. US citizens never forget that they, as a nation, have to overcome their dissensions. They know how to join forces if they have the feeling that their country is in danger, regardless of the party they belong to. This is the best example of what democracy should be. If I, like so many, cannot resist to the “Obamania” (he is young, charismatic, and I believe that he is honest) I think that John McCain deserves our respect. Not all politicians are capable of humour and self-mockery and not all politicians can pretend to have done great things for America. His campaign has been weighed by Sarah Palin’s candidacy. Anyone would think that those responsible for republican party’s communication had opted for sabotage…..
Wow! Do you think he’d be interested in running for Prime Minister of Australia in 8 years time?
Canada’s a little closer, just come up here instead!
hold on guys..lets bring him to whitehouse first tomorrow!
Bugger that, I’ll just move to the states.
I bet Obama wouldn’t support a clean feed.
Brilliant.
glad to see a comprehensive plan. I think the H1B support will make a big difference on silicon valley. I remember during my time at school, many international students don’t want to work for startups simply because it is harder to stay in the states.
also, better broadband and wireless! hopefully pave a way for the long delayed mobile platform?
“Pave the way for the long delayed mobile platform.”
Not a good idea. Having worked with the government on IT projects, I think the they are least qualified to get this done.
He doesn’t understand that H1 is not the same as permanent residency.

It is better if he shared how much his programs cost on a per line item basis, and where he’d source the funds for it.
But he has come up with very nice plans, I must say.
The amount of money we are bleeding in Iraq alone could fund all of these program. The amount of money wasted on failed defense projects could fund all of these programs. McCain says let the private sector handle it – as a matter of fact, AOL gives away 2000+ hours of free internet my friends!
Both of you should try harder… annoying, old, and unoriginal.

tech, have you gone through McCain’s plan on how to fix the mortgage and foreclosure situation? Now that is an example of socialism.
I just love it when people parrot away cool words and lines just because they heard it on a campaign stump speech without even doing their research.
You’re talking about Obama believers right?

read a book for once and stop being spoonfed everything you hear and taking it for fact.
That’s why I say vote 3rd party. That way you can show your disgust of both candidates and still plead innocent to the whole mess.
Wow, someone with critical thinking… Nice!
You went through a Bank Stabilization program yourself … Do you feel somehow impaired to have an opinion?
I tell you : It is possible. even the arrogant and lazy frenchs did it
. Why not americans ?
Having this kind of system greatly reduces on a short period of time administrative costs.
Please vote for McCain.
Please stop begging the Old man lost already!
Please vote for McCain.
Pie in the sky … and Obama supporters buy it hook, line, and sinker.
Obama:
Wants to force workers to join a union and pay dues as a condition of employment.
McCain:
Supports giving workers the right to choose whether or not to join a union.
[citation needed]
I see you’re able to mindlessly parrot Republican mailers. What a nuanced system of thought you display!
Also, in general, your historical analogy is completely bogus and stupid. There’s just no serious analogy.

*headdesk*
Let me clarify something…You can make 1000 donations of $100. Totaling over $2300. Using fake names, fake addresses etc.
you are a douchebag sir, Last i check when i use my credit card i just don’t submit any name i want, it has to be the one on the card.
The horrible horrible lies and smears!
He’s going to double funding for R&D! nuff said. Come on guys let’s get out and vote, and put and end to this nightmare.
interesting video…thanks for the info!

Electronic Health Records and Broadband access for the poor. Those are at the top my list too! Not!
