Another Week, Another 18,885 Layoffs
by Erick Schonfeld on November 1, 2008

Since our last update a week ago, we’ve added 18,885 job eliminations at tech and media companies to our Layoff Tracker. That brings the total to 38,538 layoffs across 108 companies over the past two months.

Some of the bigger reductions this week came from Motorola (3,000), Qwest (1,200), and Electronic Arts (600).  Among startups, there were job cuts at Revision3 (10), Emusic (10), Sugar Publishing (9), Aliph/Jawbone (25), matchmine (42, deadpool), and Gizmos (10).  We’ve also started adding media companies facing disruption from the Internet, including Gannett (3,000), Time Inc. (600), and Conde Nast (32), whose Portfolio magazine laid off nearly all of its Website staff.

If you know of any layoffs at a tech company, please submit a tip with the name of the company and number of layoffs. If it’s been covered, also send a link to the blog post or news article.  (For those more interested in who is hiring, check out our job board).

  • Don’t let Schonfeld put you off, visit craigslist.org
There are still plenty of jobs in SoCal and NoCal.
    http://losangeles.craigslist.org/sof/
I’m still employed in SoCal IT and so are a bunch of other people.

Some times companies have people that do work that is really peripheral. When you get a job, make sure to try to do work that is critical to operations.

I’d say California is the IT job capital of the world, regardless of all these posts. I have a strong feeling that txecs that were going to lay people off anyway are using this as an excuse, and they’re publicizing it where as they wouldn’t have otherwise.

  • who else think if mccain comes as president, these numbers will be double next week ?

    • Please tell me your joking! Obama is the one who wants to raise taxes, and has hired the former CEO of Fannie Mae as his economic advisor. Maybe you should read up a bit and then maybe you actually know something about what’s going on!

      • maybe you should read more?

      • Yes, Obama keeps saying that he will “distribute the wealth” by taxing everyone in the US, particularly small and medium-size businesses, which, by the way, are already planning to cut expenses by laying off employees.
        What does this mean??
Think about it: unemployment will will greatly increase, affecting everything in our economy.
Think about it: with people not being able to draw a salary, families all over the country will suffer.
Think about it: crime in every form will certainly increase… In many states, police forces are already laying off officers dur to inability to cover expenses, equipment, health care costs and much more…
Please Think about it: OBAMA MUST NOT BE THE NEXT US PRESIDENT!!!

    • Don’t fool yourself - predictions of an Obama + Democrat Congress victory is exactly why these numbers are higher than they should be. Well, I can only speak from personal experience. I ATTENDED a meeting where the discussion was - “do we cut 10% or bump it to 15% in light of the impending Democrat-led government?”

It’s a combination of “we can trim some fat now because everyone’s doing it” and “we are scared to death of what havoc will be wrought by a democrat mandate without the possibility of a republican filibuster or veto-power to keep them in check.

I can only speak of what I have personally observed. But that is what I personally have observed.

      • @Bob - You are correct. You will see on TC pages in the next two-three weeks that major IT companies all over the US, particularly in the Valley, will lay off hundreds of employees, including seasoned engineers and support personnel - Google will continue with the trimming, all because of the uncertain future.
What is CERTAIN is that if Obama is elected president, many companies will suffer and even close… We would ALL be screwed!!!

      • I agree. Even more: there are several large IT companies already planning to move out of the US, which will become another damned socialist country if Barack Hussein is elected president…
Let’s hope, for everyone’s sake, that Palin-McCain are elected on Tuesday.

      • There are several large California IT companies that have already bought buildings and land in Caribbean islands, Canada and Mexico, getting ready to relocate, just in case…

  • Gavin you are funny. Guess you do read a lot and you get to stick to your views. Id say this, raising taxes is not a bad thing if the it is going to bring common good to all. You maybe of the ilk who believes to have a $400 plus Billion Defense budget and pay for it either, but you would not be for say a Stronger Enforcement Agency like the FDA or EPA which also would require use of taxes to pay for.
Fundamentally a lot of folks who are against raising of taxes or having any taxes just want things or want things selectively.
Maybe you would be better served reading up on the history of how and why we have Government Agencies for which we pay taxes to maintain and manage. Yes has there been a problem with management yes and we cna do a better job of that but the argument that Private enterprise can do a better job has shown us * data and facts) point otherwise.
Taxes don’t kill jobs, if it isn’t for fine Public institutions like the University of California system or other places, fundamental research wont happen and we wont get new products and services which create new businesses and raise taxes to further along the process.
So don’t talk about TAXES as being the evil thing in the room, maybe you should just state that you wont vote for progressive ideas cuz you cant see them that way.

  • seriously guys.. let’s not troll the Tech Crunch comments into a political spam forum… PLEASE!

  • Since when did TechCrunch become FuckedCompany?

    • It Doesnt Work Anymore {seesmic_video:{”url_thumbnail”:{”value”:”http://t.seesmic.com/thumbnail/XIZz7hsPrd_th1.jpg”}”title”:{”value”:”It Doesnt Work Anymore ”}”videoUri”:{”value”:”http://www.seesmic.com/video/agyQtSCB2X”}}}

  • if you also add in the layoffs in the technology departments of financial firms such as lehman brothers and merill lynch, this figure would go up dramatically. Dont know exact numbers though

  • Here’s some advice to those out of work. Here’s 3 new job sites just added to the About.com top 10 job site list -

    http://www.linkedin.com (professional networking)
    http://www.indeed.com (aggregated job listings)
http://www.realmatch.com (matches you to the perfect job)

Good luck to all those searching for jobs.

  • I didn’t know Israel was part of the USA.

Why not included Ecuador, El Salvador, Haiti……………..

  • Is it just me or is TechCrunch overly cavalier about layoffs? Just feels sadistic. TC, I think you (and everyone else) would be far better served by dropping the arrogance and engendering a sense of community. Maybe it’s just me.

    • Erick is the sadistic fool inclined to spread bad news [he even includes Israel as part of the US IT field]
TC & Arrington go along with Erick because, precisely, bad news is ‘goooood’ for their twisted brand of “journalism”
      Give me a break!

  • If companies hire, can we subtract those jobs from those numbers? Everyone is kind of in a wait and see mode right now but some companies are hiring in the valley. Probably not 18,885 of them but some are….

  • TechCrunch is doing a service for everyone. Layoffs are news and there’s nothing sadistic about it. I was one of the companies they had to call and trust me, they took no joy what so ever in it.

  • I think this type of coverage is part of the entire problem. We need confidence, as this economy is built on it.

    • yes, our economy is build on confidence and that’s why we are in the shitter because we are way too confidence that everything is going to be all right and the bank can keep operating in the black box.

  • 10340 is a lot less than 18885. why are you inflating the numbers?

that’s the kind of math that will get you laid off (hopefully)

    or fired(more hopefully)

  • I love how people are already trying to blame a future Obama administration for the mess we are currently in as a result of the previous two decades of excess, under BOTH republican AND democratic administrations.

The Bay Area is ground zero for the housing crisis (ie. fools bidding up the price of houses using zero down ARM mortgages as if they were tech stocks) and other examples of excess (eg. how many of those 24 yr old asian kids can actually afford those BMWs? um…not many!)…

Let’s blame ourselves before we blame our future leaders.

    • Geez! Another fool who believes that the “Messiah” will fix everything in the US!!! Guys, hold on to your seats: Obama + Congress will tax everything that moves and does not move in our country, have the federal government intrude into *EVERYTHING* in our lives!
Just ask “Joe the plumber” — just because his question made Obama say on camera that he wants to “spread the wealth” in the US, his life has been turned upside down… his privacy has been violated multiple times, government agencies have looked into *everything* in his life, business, family members and more!!!
      Please you all: WAKE UP!!!

    • every startup you read about on techcrunch is in a tax bracket that will pay more under the avowed tax plan of an obama administration.

      and that entails definite consequences.

  • So, you really think that Barack Hussein will reduce taxes??? Liberal democrats have *always* increase taxes and spending!
Tell us all why you think that this guy is different, other than being half-black?? [I see the 'racist' response coming up...]
Obama has said it many times in the past year or so: he will increase taxes!!!
You should remove your head from your rectum and come out for air from time to time…

    • Why is Obama’s color relevant to the economy? Please explain.

    • Only to the extent that he is going to fuck everything up: No experience, no clue, knows NOTHING about the economy, promises “financial help” to every American in the form of “spreading the wealth” and another thing: he + democratic Congress are going to INCREASE TAXES FOR EVERYBODY!!!! which of course means massive layoffs and a downward spiral into poverty for most American families!!!

You should also remove your head from your rectum and come out for air from time to time… PLEASE WAKE UP!!!

  • There is still allot of redundancy in tech! You do not need to have 10 applications do the same work.

The developers maybe doing a good job, but it takes a lot more to get a company going! It is competion. No matter who will be elected as president, the results for the economy will be the same!

America is not an island. There is global competition!

  • I think this succinctly sums it up and says it all:

  • Although many companies are cutting back staff, there are those who are standing firm behind their mission/vision and are continuing to add top talent to their organizations. Check out The Web War for a comprehensive directory of software/web companies in your area - sorted by location and category.

  • I am one of the 500 Avid cut! yeee! go Avid go. I wonder what sort of bonus the CEO will get.
If you think about it, this kind of crap may boost creativity as long as we dont end up driving taxis…

  • Erick, you didnt even list AVID - unless you count the 500 as part of the week before… I think it was 300 one week 200 the next or something like that.

  • TechCrunch, you missed my employer - WiQuest Communications, Inc. of Allen, Texas. They closed their doors on October 31st, leaving 78 US employees and forty or so Indian employees out of work.

Oh yeah, Wireless USB and UltraWideBand technologies took a big setback with our departure as well. WiQuest was the only company with an end-to-end solution and had what limited market there was completely locked up. I imagine there are only a couple of players in this market prepared to weather this downturn.

Anyone need an experienced Device Driver developer…?

    - Joel

  • Yahoo will become contractor free come Nov, 30th. All Persistent employees in US will leave by then too

  • Todd’s right on one thing: the next President shouldn’t have to raise taxes.
Dubya should be man enough to take all the negative credit he’s run up, and revert them himself.
Halliburton et al could soften things by returning their war booty premiums.
As for the rating agencies, the profiteers of insustainability/suss instability, and the regulators who did the fixes after Andersen-Enron yet didn’t see/hear this funny money collapse coming.. they deserve a special tax regime till the bail-outs are repaid.

Fantastic to now learn what fairweather capitalists there are, literally leaving it to the rest. “Hasta la vista, baby” or time to close the border on the US side? Where are they getting the finance to relocate like that?

@Joel C, maybe there’s a client-base there also worth chatting to, with colleagues.. simply a thought.

    Best wishes folks

  • “the regulators who did the fixes after Andersen-Enron yet didn’t see/hear this funny money collapse coming… ”
They not only saw it, they actually pushed through the regs, and they have names! and they are still on Capitol Hill: Barney Frank [the gay elephant in the room], Christopher Dodd, Chuck Schumer, Harry Reid et al. together with their comrades at Fannie Mae: Franklin Raines, who “made” $90M in five years, funneling some of that dough to the above mentioned creeps, *INCLUUDING* Barack Hussein…
BTW, Franklin Raines is now the “Messiah’s” financial advisor!!!
All these clowns deserve long jail times… but it is not going to happen. Why not? because they are all liberal Democrats, that’s why… Remember Slick Willie? indicted, convicted and impeached… and he continued to the President!!! You know why?…
Franklin Raines is getting away with *BIG* fraud and no one can say anything about it because he is a “bro” and doing so, fo course, would be racist!!!
The same situation as the Messiah: no one can ask anything about his past, his education, his accomplishments [none, by the way] just because he is half-black!!!
Anyway, Barack Hussein IS LOSING ALREADY!!! and HE KNOWS IT!!!

  • >> Funny stuff on Halloween night: a neighborhood in Virginia upset because a lady refused to give candy to children of Obama’s supporters!!!
    Right on!!!

  • Loads of jobs here at

    http://www.jobstaxi.com

It really isnt all that bad!

  • What does Israel have to do with this?

  • While I do think many companies are bracing for increase taxes or regulation, the economic struggles of Wall Street are a result of Economic deregulation of the Bush and Clinton eras. There will be difficult economic times for everyone even if McCain is elected. But those making less than $250 K may be better off under an Obama presidency. Unions support Democrats and McCain wants to export jobs overseas, so pick your poison.

  • Sad to say but there’s probably plenty more to come and companies look to get more lean. There’s always new opportunities for anyone’s who’s lost a job.

  • One more company to include in the layoff roster:
    Vovici Corporation
    Dulles, VA
    Employees 110, October 28, laid off 30

  • I have worked for over 30 years and have been layed off or fired only a few times and it was devastating for both my family and myself. One thing that happened every time, I got a better job. Just don’t give up, take a breather and keep on trying.
