I dread clicking on Yahoo video news on their main page, because whenever I do, stuff generally don’t stream well–ok, so it’s my shit ISP. But you see, whereas other “worse” online video providers at least allow you to pause the video, so that after it buffers for a while, playback would be smooth later, this Yahoo streamcast would simply kill the video, and refuse to even budge after you click resume. What good is having a link to your streamcast when it doesn’t work properly, Yahoo?

I think most of the visitors are diverted from youtube those might be using yahoo video as second video search engine to find wide variety of videos.

As a former Y exec I can tell you that there is actually one significant driver of these changes at Yahoo Video. It has a new GM in Shravan Goli. I think a certain amount of kudos should be given to him considering the sisyphusean task of coaxing the warring factions of the Y matrix into actually making forward progress in this area. But frankly considering his now public success I’m sure he’ll be added to the TechCrunch Yahoo exec exit list soon.

Someone needs to put google in it’s place.

I also heard the Yahoo radio spots. I was surprised considering their current partnership with google. Driving more people to yahoo, may increase yahoo’s income (enough to recoup thei marketing cost? remains to be seen), but if those clicks are to google ads, then so will google. How is this a case of Yahoo is better than google. Misleading advertising.

EH: You seem a bit emotionally involved in this topic, just so you know. While TC is guilty of sensationalism for the sake of page views, they are often equally rough with others (remember Arrington’s diatribe about apple failing with registering iphones at launch, mobileme, 3G firmware issues, etc.?). ‘Salt in the wounds’ is kind of fun when given such great “material” by company decisions that are made with complete incompetence.

We can easily do a search on TC for Yahoo posts and go through them one by one to see how favorable/ unfavorable the posts have been by percentage, author, etc., but I don’t think you’d want to do that because you might be forced to give up this tantrum.

It couldn’t possibly be a backlash against YouTube’s execrable quality “enhancements” (compression, channel reduction, etc) over the past six months. No, the fact that YouTube videos invariably need to be paused in order to buffer up for somewhat glitch-free playback couldn’t possibly have anything to do with it.

YouTube has the quantity, there’s no arguing that, but to say that’s enough to keep people from looking elsewhere is myopic.

Somehow I get a feeling that this 56% jump could be explained in other ways than a simple usage increase. It is and I don’t know for sure but because the counting method or the way Yahoo present videos has changed.

I think these numbers will continue to grow for them. it might be partially due to the election also. There is a tremendous amount of video out there regarding everything in politics right now.
