Facebook Widens The Gap With MySpace Internationally
by Erick Schonfeld on October 29, 2008

Facebook blew past MySpace in visitors from across the world back in April, but the global gap continues to widen. According to the latest figures from comScore, Facebook attracted 161.1 million unique visitors worldwide in September, compared 117.9 million for MySpace. For Facebook, that number was up from 4.7 percent from the 153.9 million people who visited the social network in August. Visitors to MySpace declined 1.6 percent globally from 119.8 million.

The global gap between the two is now 43.2 million visitors. To put that in perspective that is a tad more than the number of people who visit Facebook in the U.S. alone, which in September was 41.4 million. MySpace still dominates in the U.S., with 73.0 million visitors in September.

MySpace argues that it is more interested in winning globally in the top ad markets, and in general it is winning in countries such as the U.S., Germany, and Japan. But Facebook is leading in France and the UK. Those are the top five markets.

  • It is not just about numbers, it is also the quality of the visitors.

Of course there is some overlap between the two, but one gets the feeling that more techies and business professionals now visit facebook.

It is a sign of genius how they were able to reinvent themselves in the past year – from a distant second place with no spark – to what they are experiencing now.

Wonder how the recession will effect them and MySpace.

Will people become more proactive on those sites while seeking work or business mentors

    • Good observation.
Perhaps, the recession will not ‘directly’ affect the number of visitors – as in, the causal factors of increase/decrease of MySpace/Facebook usage are not easy to determine; do they get more users when more people are out of job? does the recession cause more people to spend time on work than on social networking? do people spend less time traveling, and hence, use social networking as an avenue for entertainment? – we do not know yet. While it’s hard to tell how the recession will affect the usage of MySpace/FaceBook, their revenue source (ie ad dollars) will inevitably be affected, though the exact % will be hard to quantify

  • I think the increasing using of facebook still more..and more again in the next time

  • Most of my peers 35-40 have never had an account at Myspace are just finding out how useful/useless Facebook can be. I bet the margin widens because myspace seems to have about a 25 yr old limit. They need to do some maturing of the site to appeal to the older crowd, otherwise they have too limited of a market(14-25)

    • I’ve always viewed myspace as geared towards the 14-20 crowd. The crowded pages with default music blaring combined with sparkly dodads.

      • I’m a high schooler and had a MySpace for about a week. Soon after, I deleted my account and have been with Facebook since.

I’ve come to the conclusion that students, and just people in general, that are more active (in their communities and schools) will gravitate towards Facebook rather than MySpace, as it’s sooo much easier to get the word about upcoming events on Facebook. That, and it’s just so much simpler. When you’re more involved and have less time, you begin to appreciate simplicity. The two really strong things I see that MySpace may have going for it are 1) it’s been around longer and 2) it has an excellent incorporation of music, which is a vital aspect in today’s culture.

  • Agree with Public*Relations, its not about numbers. The people who are gravitating to Facebook now are 40 and 50 yr olds finding old friends and colleagues. Most people I know have a rule that Facebook friends must be people you are already connected with in real life, because of the nature of what you’re able to disclose about yourself there. MySpace is more of a free for all, and isn’t all that useful for genuine connection.

  • That date line looks suspiciously close to April 1st. *just saying ;-)

since i am in the usa i pay more attention to usa market share which last i checked facebook is losing that battle still.

  • Now if only Facebook could monetize their site… Facebooks audience is more savvy and more mature thus leading to a more experienced user who is less likely to click those silly ads.

  • While I have no affiliation to AmIOnMySpace.com, they have significantly reduced my number of MySpace visits. Ergo, I’ve done my part in contributing to that chart.

  • Bang on Marko. People who pimp their profiles are much more likely to be induced by the flashy ads.

  • At the end of the day myspace still comes on top where itr counts and thats making money.

  • Big numbers are cool and all, but isn’t it more about what you do with the visitors? MySpace has a stranglehold on the entertainment industry as it allows for band, label, studio branding in a way that Facebook does not. There are clear opportunities for monetization there. What’s Facebook’s revenue model?

Basically, these silly arms races don’t mean much if Facebook continues to lose money the way it has. We’ll see.

  • f you are looking for cheap WOW gold http://www.iwowleveling.com , if you want the service to be humanity, if you want a safe and fast transaction,

  • Expect it to keep on trucking…Facebook still represents “real”.

  • I got into FB for about 10 months, now I don’t really use it. I found people I know on FB, but in general I find more interesting people still on MySpace. I think FB is about who you already know and is good for that. MySpace is more about finding new & interesting things. Each provides their own service.

  • can we really consider that they are competitors since people don’t use them for the same reasons?

  • Facebook is being used more for business and that is attrative to small business owners and professionals. Facebook has been a great tool for me and I think anyone looking to stay engaged should consider Facebook although I do believe both have value.

  • Myspace is too disorganized and has been sleeping for a long time now http://youtechno.info

  • Happy for Facebook. Cheers!!!

  • I believe facebook is gaining prominence globally because they’ve made great efforts to make their platform available in many languages. Myspace hasn’t been so successful in that.
