I work in the website of a well known newspaper in a country somewhere in the world, and oh, I feel a bit of relief to know that this sort of comments are written also in sites likes this.
And I could add a couple more, like "How much did XXX paid you for this article", or "what kind of journalist do the hire in XX".

Greetings.

I like the fact that you delete useless comments. I do the same on my blog. The one type that irritates me (#11?) is someone who just disses a blog posting without offering input. "You don't know jack about (topic)". I don't know why they don't post something corrective or useful. I delete these postings, too.

This post pretty much sums up 97% of the active Internet population right here. I'd be interested in a comparison between these types of comments and the ones made on Digg. It's probably the same people making these comments wherever they can.

Dwayne.

Totally nailed it! The "unsubscribes" are perhaps the most ridiculous of them all. If you sit and watch long enough, I'm sure you'll see the same people "unsubscribe" repeatedly. Some people's kids, eh?

I'm getting to this post very late, but as soon as I read it... I couldn't help but think of that Locator Dude. Sure enough he's here.

If there is anyone who's been in sore need of a banning, it's him. I get the feeling that Locator Dude brings a smile to Arrington's face.

Seriously? Excellent points, but what about TechCrunch's own issues which have yet to be fixed after what? Years?

We still can't properly tab from the website field to the actual textbox. Jumps right to the submit button. This is basic form design 101. Get it right.

TechCrunch, for whatever reason, refuses to delete frivolous or off-topic comments, even on archived posts. You can rant all you want about the colorful comments left - but it strikes me that at least the top 10 above are all, at least, relevant to the topic at hand.

I assume this neglect is due to lack of staffing, or just the inferior comment control of common blogging platforms of our day, but it strikes me that the snarky critiques of Yahoo from a few guys sitting around their living room should be at least tempered with an acknowledgment that running a major internet community can be difficult to manage. Yahoo does an extraordinary job across their various brands while T/C, in my opinion, needs some significant help in cleaning up their own community.

Slashing out at readers, particularly those who comment on topic and help build the brand and content of T/C -- all of whom who have likely committed at least once one of the cardinal sins listed above -- just seems to me almost as elitist as many of the companies T/C exposes for doing similar foot-in-mouth antics.

Arrington says above that comments that are boring or threatening are deleted. Well enough, but it isn't true. The number of "me too" comments on any given post at T/C is at least matched by the number of spam comments pushing some URL, etc.

And if I recall, threatening comments tend to get elevated to full-fledged stories so that we can all laugh at them and help to send the threat-maker into madness and delusion.

As much as I truly love T/C and say these things out of a desire to see improvement, I have to admit I'd jump ship pretty quickly if I found a blog that covered this stuff similarly but could manage comments far better. I suppose it's a testament to Arrington and Co. that no such website exists and those who have tried have fallen rather flat. Still, I see no need to critique the readers quite yet when so much more needs to be done on the Admin side.
