Google is launching Google Apps Labs today, a new platform for experimental apps (Google Moderator is one of the first to be added).
These are third party applications that can be added by businesses and schools using Google Apps. In addition to Google Moderator, two other apps are available now: Google Code Reviews (peer review of software code) and Google Short Links (change URLs to something shorter and more descriptive).
What’s most interesting about the announcement is that Google will be opening up the platform to third party developers who want their apps to be available to the “million-plus businesses” using Google Apps today. Salesforce’s AppStore developers will certainly take notice.

I would like to see some apps be created around project management and event management. i wonder how many apps will be created that will connect to a company’s existing systems.
ProjectGoo (developed by ManageScope, LLC) does exactly what you were discussing — provide a project management application that integrates the Google Cloud and Microsoft Project.
This is great. Here at Passpack we were waiting for something similar.
How about enabling Google Labs for Google Apps Mail, just like Gmail has?
Why is the business mail crippled in comparison with Google’s free mail service?
I bet lots of people read the tile of this entry hoping it was just that.
Totally agree. The *paid* version of things like GMail (the version for Google Apps) actually has less functionality than the free, non-business version. It’s not just the Google Labs stuff that’s missing. Integration across apps, sharing features and other things are missing too.
Google Apps mail does indeed support Gmail Labs. You have to make sure that ‘Turn on new features (like group chat or colored labels)’ is enabled in the domain settings. After a day or two the Labs tab appears on the Google Apps Gmail settings.
well…give it month or two first 50 apps will define how this will work out! or it will be another way to search !
Well, one thing was omitted, and i think it’s a huge mistake – i mean the app catalogue. It’s the most fun and useful additional feature that google provides. Other folks come and asses the design and coding – i’ve recently found out that it’s not the best practice to put logging via google account in the div, as it may be endangered by phising. If you also have any comments on my app please leave it here:

Google is the best.
Google Moderator has now been adopted as the new, official
way to suggest and vote on features for Google Apps. Its available
via the “suggest a feature” link on the left side of the help center:

Oh great. Say goodbye to about 5 million websites.
Google Short Link? Not so innovative..:P
Very cool. I’m gonna check it out.

Hey J. Michael:
Can I Teare you away from your work for a moment to tell you a little bit about my company.
Archimedes Ventures. It’s a small, quiet VC that often is confused with Matt Ocko’s Archimedes Capital. Quite odd, actually.
Anyway, Archimedes Ventures invests in companies that are really neato.
Have you heard of us?
I know it must have been hard for google to ignore the fact that Google Apps users might want to have calendar in the mail. Yup, exactly like Gmail has. Also – like Outlook.
Why does google hide the really cool/useful tools that were built for gmail. My best guess is they want to maintain a certain quality on their apps side – but heck – put an opt-in button and enable the labs for us all!
Third parties developers welcome…. Does it meat that Google is tired to manage their own developers?
with all their benefits and stuff
very nice.Let me check.
