Truphone, the VoIP-calls over mobile software developer made most famous by its iPhone app, now has a beta version of the app running on the BlackBerry 8801 and Curve devices. The product is called Truphone Anywhere for Blackberry.
London-based Truphone, which can use Wi-Fi as well as phone network for VoIP calls, started out on Symbian OS-based Nokia devices but really started to hit paydirt when it launched an iPhone app. There is no Windows Mobile version right now but one is understood to be in development.
The software can be downloaded via Blackberry’s built-in browser. Truphone integrates well with the handset’s address book and the newer version of the software routes calls via the cheapest network available to the handset, be it GSM or Truphone’s service over VOIP, but only if you select this manually.
Truphone’s targeting of the Blackberry could take it a great deal more mainstream in the US than the iPhone or Nokia devices are capable of, especially among business users looking to cut costs.
Update: You can get the app now from here.

Mike,
Can I get the Beta version from here?

Sounds good
Speaking of which, I’m also curious about Cubic Telecom – has is been launched yet? – and if so, how does it fare compared to Truphone?
Still not working on ipod touch. Not good.
Where might one be able to pick this beta up? This is a huge win if it works well for the Blackberry world.
Can’t put my blackberry down
You can get informed about the official launch first by inputting your email here.
If i’m in an area with dependable enough wifi to make a call with my iphone or BBerry, isn’t it likley that in most cases I’d have a PC or landline on which i could make the VOIP call as well?
And also, aren’t the iphone and BBerry primarily used by higher income people with all-you-can-eat plans? does this have appeal only for international calls?
Not trying to dis this product, but i think I must be missing its appeal.
Try finding Vopium for blackberry for cheap VOIP call or wifi call from your blackberry

Hey Adolf, the iphone and bberry has definitely surpassed being used by only higher income folks. Add the cool factor into the iphones and now I have seen kids as young as junior high schoolers using them.
With that being said, usually only the data plan (about $30 to $40 on top of voice plans) is unlimited. The number of minutes you get for voice is based on the plan that you pick. This is what makes this app so great. You can utilize your unlimited data plan to make calls while saving on your limited voice minutes.
How is this better than iSkoot for BlackBerry which connects to Skype via a local call?
it doesnt work on the bold??
Truphone Anywhere, the application now released for the blackberry, is one of the features I use most often on my nokia E65. As most owners of smartphones have huge minute bundles anyway, the bundle is almost the same as the WiFi: The leg into the IP cloud is essentially free! (Voice quality and coolness factor on WiFi is much higher, though)
90% of my phone bill used to be international calls, which truphone reduced by at least 90%, saving me hundreds of pounds monthly. Sure, I could have used Skype or other methods – but truth is: I did not want to change my normal behaviour of simply-dialing-from-the-address-book.
A more holistic analysis can be found on our blog at http://www.straubventures.com (as we are not only fans, but also supporters of the business).
Stefan
