many of the "software" based features that are being requested are available if you know how to jailbreak your 2g/3g iphone. Cycorder is an awesome video capture program written by jay freeman of Cydia fame. He also helped write snapture, digital camera software with zoom and other options. i know both of these programs are ad supported, but the ads don't intrude, and the quality is great. SwirlyMMS is another program that fixes one of the biggest requests on the iphone, MMS capability. Install the program on your jailbroken phone, and obtain the necessary server information from your mobile carrier and you're all set. finally, for landscape view of texts (no email support yet), check out realsms, all the functions of the native SMS application, with added functionality. There are even programs that allow a basic type of iphone tethering allowing you to use it as a modem.

additionally, openSSH allows wireless file transfers over the same router.

by the way, if you have read any of the news in the past few months, you would know that adobe has already developed a flash plug-in for the iphone, but that apple hasn't given it's blessing for the plugin... (quite ridiculous, imho)

you can find guides to jailbreaking all over the web, it's not difficult, especially with quickpwn, and you don't have to worry about reinstalling all your apps, contacts, or any of that mess...

so go jailbreak your iphone already!!!

and finally, the dev team have cracked the core of the iphone 3G os, and are so so very close to releasing an unlock for the 3g, now that will have been worth the wait....

I'm sure I'm gonna say a few things here that have already been said above. So I apologize in advance. I had an iPhone 3G and returned it to the store. Then I went back to my blackberry curve and haven't looked back since.

Here's my take on the whole thing: If you've never had a 'smart' phone before, than you'll enjoy the iPhone (i realize that Jobs dissed 'smart' phones in the first iPhone keynote, but that's what the iPhone is). It's the perfect starter kit for the person that wants to move up from their crappy old flip or candybar style phone. You will simply be amazed at all the lovely features. It will make your old phone seem like something from the 1800s. It will be purely awesome. What I'm saying is that if you've never had a blackberry before, then you won't know what you're missing. And what you don't know can't hurt you (or can it?)

[NOTE: If you ask around, you'll actually be surprised when you find out how many iPhone owners never had a smart phone before. Jobs' marketing was brilliant-- he made people with simple phones think that THIS WAS THE SMARTPHONE THEY'D BEEN WAITING FOR. But you'll notice that more often than not, people with blackberries/treos did not make the switch. Cause they new better. I'm just a gadget junkie, so I bought it for kicks... And was not surprised when I returned it for all of it's shortcomings.]

Here are all the things that the Blackberry Curve has, which the iPhone does not (Again, if the iPhone is your first smart phone and you already have it, no need to read on. You'll just get defensive, but you're wasting your breath. You don't know what you're talking about. You're like that guy Plato talks about in his Allegory of the Cave. What you're used to is a shadow, not a real phone. So you have no basis for comparison).

Oh, before I begin this list I just wanna say that these are all 'phone' things that the iPhone is missing. I'm not comparing the parts of the iPhone that act like a mini-computer. And the truth is... I could care less about 3G, an app store, an ipod and a full screen browser. That's what I have my computer for. And if you need all these things ALL THE TIME, then get an ipod touch and carry two devices until someone finally comes out with the perfect phone (which they have yet to do. And believe me, it's not t-mobile's new Android phone either.)

So if you're still with me, and you're most interested in having a great PHONE, then read on...

A LIST OF THINGS THAT THE BLACKBERRY CURVE HAS OVER THE IPHONE:

-Ability to send MMS
-A battery that lasts for days, not hours
-A speaker that's loud enough
-An amazingly loud speakerphone
-The ability to cut and paste
-A much better shape for pockets or bags
-A MUCH easier keyboard to type on (typing on glass is cute at best)
-An extremely fast OS (you can literally count the seconds it takes to open SMS on the iPhone)
-A camera that takes decent pictures, even at night
-Blackberry Messenger (if you haven't used this, it's AMAZING)
-Gmail for blackberry (so you can search through years of old emails instantly)
-Cut and paste (as everyone has said-- so important)
-A feeling of security (kidding)
-Text privacy (on the iphone, anyone can see who you just got a text from, even if it's locked). Some people appreciate the option of text privacy that the blackberry has.
-Changeable battery
-Swappable memory cards
-Etc

Hope that helps. The iPhone is a fun toy to play with... But it's halfway between a phone and a computer. It's not big enough to be enjoyable to use like an actual computer... and it's not powerful enough to feel like you're really using a laptop.

Bring it.

I’m sure I’m gonna say a few things here that have already been said above. So I apologize in advance. I had an iPhone 3G and returned it to the store. Then I went back to my blackberry curve and haven’t looked back since.

Here’s my take on the whole thing: If you’ve never had a ’smart’ phone before, than you’ll enjoy the iPhone (i realize that Jobs dissed ’smart’ phones in the first iPhone keynote, but that’s what the iPhone is). It’s the perfect starter kit for the person that wants to move up from their crappy old flip or candybar style phone. You will simply be amazed at all the lovely features. It will make your old phone seem like something from the 1800s. It will be purely awesome. What I’m saying is that if you’ve never had a blackberry before, then you won’t know what you’re missing. And what you don’t know can’t hurt you (or can it?)
