It's heartwarming to have Ted back at the hammer again. Reassuring, like.

Of all the "voices" in this cyber-bestial and self-religious "industry" his would have been the first to predict his... own... epic... fail...

... but more to the point, he could illuminate why and how in a clear cool wash of scathing savagery that's been noticeably lacking around here since uncov closed shop.

Judging by all these fervent comments --- and a quick glance at the undies-in-a-bunch-o-meter on the wall --- it's been wayyy lacking. Compare this here... whine...fest...c'mon...people... to the deepcrawling and industry-self-critical comments following any given post of uncov and you might get a clue why uncov was such strong work.

Hello? Ted's giving us a rare glimpse of how ackshully smart he is. He's cutting his (and his investors') losses early, very early, opting instead for the finest things in life.

Like raising a very lucky kid. Like smiting the heads of craving annelid posers.

Welcome back, Ted. Oh, and... in after PressFlip.

So Arrington invest in a company that fails? Big deal. How is your stock portfolio doing nowadays? At least he made an investment. He tried something. With his own money.

All Ted did was sit back and snipe at people who tried. And he did it usually via very nasty personal attacks. He would accurately slice and dice their often ridiculous business plan, but then he would go on and attack the persons themselves. Ted would spew countless amounts of venom at people who, for better or worse, were trying to accomplish something.

FWIW, I think half the stuff that Arrington gets all excited about is crap. But at the end of the day, Mike has a successful business, he has proved he has what it takes to run a company and it seems as if he is turning a profit.

Ted has...well, he has technical smarts for sure. But he hasn't ever run a successful business, probably never earned any significant amount of money outside of an employer and has shown that he can't hack the hard part of getting a company started.

So Arrington has accomplished an order of magnitude more than Ted. Doesn't matter that Ted has a better grasp of math and complex things when it comes to discussing business. Cuz Ted fails at it and Mike wins. Simple as that.

Whatever:

I don't necessarily disagree with what you're saying. But I wonder whether guys like you take a stand when Arrington invests in companies that miserably fail.

Ted is small pickins. Impress me whatever, and go after the fat man.

Or is this Matt Marshall at VentureBeat?

What does my post have to do with Bemused? Or are you just Ted replying by proxy?

No, I'm just one of the guys that did read Uncov because it could be funny, but always thought that Ted had no clue about the reality of running a business. And if you ever disagreed with him on anything then you were shouted down by him and his sycophants as being a fuckhead or his favorite profane word of the day.

So when Ted launched his own business with a very dubious (laughable?) business plan, I was one of those people that thought "Well, at least he will get to experience this for himself."

And he failed. Miserably. Epic fail as he loved to say. EPIC FAIL. Even the idiotic business plans he lampooned lasted longer than he did. It's just funny!!!!

The guy criticized stupid startup ideas. And the people running them. And then he starts one and he can't even stick with it. Dude...that is just priceless.

So, Ted. When's the next startup? Or when do you go back to bitching about insignificant technical trivialities? I can't wait! Because now everyone knows that you yourself don't have what it takes to get an even a crappy idea off the ground!

Awww..what a shame. Little foul-mouthed Ted couldn't hack it in the real world, huh? Found out that running a company was more complicated than optimizing the Javascript on the site? Wow. Who would have thought that?

Oh. That's right. Anyone who isn't a complete nerd douche-bag and understands that running a business is a lot harder than sitting around bitching about how small Javascript files are. In other words, 99% of the population already knew this.

Ted - You deserve EPIC FAIL. And you got it. And it brightened my day to hear about it.

Bemused refers to babies as "little fuckers"?

Without question, that is the most disturbing comment ever posted on this board. And that's saying quite bit...

I can only guess Bemused is echoing the very words of his own mother, who at this moment is wondering why she didn't opt for a back alley abortion.

Bemused: please kill yourself.

You're suppose to go down with the ship as a founder. I think the long run effect will be the loss of credibility. Whether or not people think $110K is a lot of money, its still money and you just can't quit.

The amount of money needed is related to the audience or customer reach the company is expected to have.
A company has 3 parts:
- product development
- sales & marketing
- running costs
If the product is simple: less product development
If the market is a niche: less marketing

If it is a web service: S3 and EC2 or similar can do wonders
If it is a physical product: then running costs will be high

I agree with you Michael on that! Passing judgment even without knowing the complete story might not be that smart... Easier said than done! there could be many reasons why Ted decided to quit. I guess it goes more to one's VALUE SYSTEM and PRIORITIES of life. And, there are times when we realize about our priorities with various experiences. cheers...

Mike:

But it IS true you had an advantage others have not...

...you caddied at 1980s hip law firm Wilson Sonsini.

Wilson Sonsini: Where every Old Mustache, Thurston Howell III, and boarding school is fast-tracked for partner.

Everyone, that is, except YOU.

As attorney, you seemed to have championed mediocrity. A worker bee M/A attorney. Not even "Of Counsel."

That's OK. It seems as though you have done a swell job identifying successful companies to invest in.

Edgio, Dogster, Dancejam...

...or as they say in the big leagues: "Strike ONE, Strike TWO, Strike THREE.

This is probably the exception rather than the rule. But it may be time for an Ignore button if we start to see more of these juvenile, YouTube-like comments.

A entrepreneur needs to be a magician at creating all the circumstances around him and his company in which he can be profitable. Unless this was a real personal dissaster he has proven not to posses the magic. End of story.
