Videos provide a better user experience for many, including my students who learn lead guitar online via my video courses/lessons. For me, youtube is just a lead generator bringing traffic to my main sites. I host my own videos on godaddy with wordpress and can also serve them from amazon s3 if bandwidth becomes an issue. So what this means is I'm not waiting around for youtube to figure out how to monetize the videos and give me a small percentage of the profits. I sell access to my content online and charge people for access to it. Musicians/bands should build and control their own community along with the revenues, and use many of these sites to generate traffic.

[...] YouTube Founder Compares Online Video To Nascent TV Market by Michael Arrington on October 16, 2008. Where we are today is not the YouTube era. It is not the digital content era, or the multi-platform era. Where we are today is an extension of the work you have all done, built on the shoulders of CBS, RCA and the other innovators who came before us. There is no old media. There is no new media. There is one media with one common purpose: to inform, move and inspire the world through information, art and entertainment. Together, we can find a solution that will benefit everyone in this ecosystem, from consumers to advertisers to the content owners alike. [...]

I agree with a lot of the points made in this piece. Internet video market is already huge and will continue to grow even in a slowing economy. The space is still in its infancy and thus offers a lot of potential.

With out TV networks, the only type of shows you will get is the under 5-minute-homemade-you-tube skits. Networks actually have studios and fund tv show projects. YouTube is just a content distributor, sort of like a cable company with infinite channels. There are hundreds if not thousands of YouTube-like startups that networks can eat up to distribute THEIR content THEIR way, e.g. Hulu.

You could say the same thing about TV production companies (who actually create and license the content) and TV networks. They create the shows, why should they share revenue with the distributors? Yet they do, because without the distributors, they don't get any revenue at all. What makes these TV networks nervous though is that they are only a middle man now with the internet. The production companies don't need them if they can get revenue from another distributor (e.g. directly from YouTube). Wait for that to happen within the next couple years.

That's because it's not site ownership, it's content ownership.

Instead of demanding that audiences come to them, they are bringing (and letting others bring) the content to their audiences, wherever they are. That's a pretty big change from the past, and likely to increase overall viewership. It's not about sites anymore.

youtube wants to extend it's business to new horizon, that's why they are thirsty for contents. I wonder how will they manage the space for such HD videos ?

Good lord, this was long and pointless. Comparing online video to television's early stages is way off mark. Television didn't disrupt radio by providing a new way to interact with media... it was a completely BRAND NEW media. At the end of the day, online video is just another distribution mechanism, that is in addition to regular television, cable/satellite, VOD, iTunes, DVD, etc.
The only thing that I can see that YouTube really proved was that user generated content is crap and largely unmonetizable. Sure, there were some internet phenoms like the star wars kid and the Landlord, the problem is that no one would actually PAY for that stuff. Unlike, say an episode or a season of Heroes, which people pay gladly for. CBS may be doing a deal with YouTube, but they also host videos on their own sites and others. They'll effectively keep online distribution a commodity with very little money in it for others and will ultimately extract the most value by doing it themselves (ie nbc.com, cbs.com, Hulu-sort of).
Historically, while the names have changed, the folks who controlled radio were still the folks who controlled television. Going forward, I'll be surprised to see if that changes, though I'm sure Silicon Valley ideologues will never have a shortage of phrases starting with, "Eventually, it will happen..."
