More MashLogic Invites Available on InviteShare
by Mark Hendrickson on October 13, 2008

We’ve run out of our 500 pre-allotted beta invites for MashLogic, a new Firefox plugin that puts users in control of website links. But you can get one by putting your name down on InviteShare, where current MashLogic users are encouraged invite up to two people each.

Also check out David Cowan’s post on the release of MashLogic. Cowan, a partner at Bessemer, describes the plugin as important for restoring Tim Berners-Lee’s original vision for the web.

  • Just like buying up all the billboards on the side of the highway…

  • I have no inclination to sign up with inviteshare, but if 2 people leave their e-mail addresses I’ll invite them.

At first I was pretty upset with mashlogic. I figured out the reason; because I choose to only display its mashes when I click (rather than mouse hover), It replaces functioning links with its own. For instance, when I go to Surf The Channel (.com), and I go to click on the TV section, mashlogic informs me that TV means

“Television (TV) is a widely used telecommunication medium for sending (broadcasting) and receiving moving images, either monochromatic (”black and white”) or color, usually accompanied by sound.”

While that is fascinating, I’d really like to just follow the link to the list of shows. Now that I’ve realised this, I’ve turned it off. Thing is, while proofing this very comment, I accidentally slid the mouse onto text that interrupted the proofing.

Also, it seems a bit slow. I have residential high-speed, nothing great, but it still seems to take its time underlining links for me.

That said, it’s clear TechCrunch loves this addon, and I love techcrunch, so I’m giving it more time then I would on my own, but I hope this beta release is just a hint of its capability.

  • MashLogic isn’t too smart yet, either. “Apple App Store” is seperated into “Apple” and “App Store” from wikipedia. Apple says “This article is about the satellite APPLE. For the fruit apple, see Apple. For other uses see Apple (disambiguation).” while the App Store one is the right one.

It almost needs an AI that will recognize when you have Apple App Store in a string you mean it as one thing.

  • So, anyone figured out how to detect stop these asshat’s from jacking up your links to goto their own content ?

Not only that, it is inevitable that when they have enough users they’ll push advertising into these annoying pop ups.

As a content producer, not terribly happy with someone else trying to create an advertising channel via the content on my sites !

  • You’re preempting

  • Why do you need beta “invites” for a Firefox add-on??? Any other good Firefox add-on simply puts the beta versions on its website to download, for example
