SGN’s Wii-like Golf And Bowling Games Both Top Ten iPhone Apps
by Michael Arrington on October 3, 2008

No surprise that SGN’s iPhone games are doing so well - they’re fun to play and they’re free. iGolf is at no. 7 on the top ten apps list and has, the company says, more than 1 million downloads. The newly launched iBowl is at no. 8.

Both games extensively use the accelerometer to control game action, resulting in a Wii-like experience. The only problem is the high chance of throwing the iPhone through the nearest window.

  • how do they make money with the free download? ads?

  • I’m very impressed with SGN’s iphone games. Michael, I’m not sure if you know the answer to this or if Shervin would tell you the answer if you asked him, but I’d be interested to understand whether or not they’re really focused on social games as defined by the industry (Friends For Sale, Knighthood, Lil Green Patch, etc.). As far as these games go, it’s not clear that they’ve released one that they’ve developed in house since their first game (pre-funding). These Wii-like games do not seem like a step in the social gaming direction and are more like mobile games.

  • You can find a list of hundreds of games at http://www.ipfun.org - They also have a neat interface for iPhone users, Its worth checking out!

  • iGolf is a terrible game (and forget that it’s only 3 holes). The (poorly located) SET button seldom works - so most swings go nowhere. When it does work, its responsiveness to swing power (driving AND putting) is garbage. It also has lousy recognition of backswing.

  • I’ve been playing it today! Every time I need a little break. And, yeah, it’s not the same as being on the links, I have to be careful not to throw my iPhone, the buttons are a little clunky (but work with practice), etc… But what it does do is transport me to the great game of golf from within my office. And, it does it for free!

Maybe I can get the guys in Hot Stix Golf ( http://www.hotstixgolf.com ) R&D to fit my iPhone for increased distance and better accuracy!!! :)
