
Last May Google announced that it would begin experimenting with display ads on its popular Image Search, which it has largely been unable to monetize – in 2006 the company estimated that it was missing out on $200 million a year because it wasn’t including ads in search results, and that number has almost certainly gone up since then. Google has previously tried to incorporate text ads into results, but abandoned the practice after seeing a marked decline in traffic.
We haven’t heard anything from Google about the ads since then, but we’ve just gotten a screenshot of one of them in the wild. As promised, the ad is distinguished by a subtle yellow background and a “sponsored link” header. Unfortunately, it seems like these new ads may only be taking text matches into account, without using any image recognition – the ad below is for a Guinness barstool that happens to be named “Buffalo”, but is clearly unrelated to the other images that dominate the results.

It’s impossible to judge the new algorithms based on a single example, but I hope this isn’t representative of what we’ll be seeing when the ads launch to the public. It’s not uncommon to see Google AdSense ads that are irrelevant to text searches, but these aren’t intrusive and generally don’t detract from search results. With images, a botched match is far more jarring – bad results on Image Search would probably turn off far more users than the abandoned text ads ever did.

I took a look at it and noticed the Google Image Labeler (http://images.g...m/imagelabeler/), I am guessing they are going to use this to determine what the images are about…

Google should also implement related images search links in the top, remove dead images links asap & also add some rating feature using which visitors can rate the search images.
i wonder how its gonna work out .. They could also get in touch with image vendors for better placement without compromising relevancy
wow. that looks pretty bad. and is a much worse user experience than the typical ad sense advert.
very interesting, i never thought about this, will see how it works, but i think this is a bad idea (not in making more money, just for users)
Eew. This seriously bugs me. I realize Google has to make their cheddar in some fashion, but this is disgustingly unfashionable. AND, I find it really distracting and intrusive (but hey, isn’t that what ads are for?).

Does this not fly directly in the face of their AdSense policy of no images beside Google Ads. It looks like a square peg in a round hole where the image does not match up with the Ad. Have you heard of them asking AdWords users to upload images? There are image ads but not text and Image together.
I always thought they could make some dough driving traffic to stock photography sites.

It definitely looks odd. I imagine they’ll fix that fairly quickly. I haven’t heard of them doing anything big with advertisers to upload, as of yet. In terms of AdSense, I suppose you could say that’s for AdSense’s contexual ads, where they’ve been against it. For search ads, maybe they’ll be less worried. Certainly if the test is successful, I imagine they’d look at allowing more image placements in all ads.
google images is baaad to begin with. does anyone know a better image search? flickr has uses but isn’t great for searching.
