there is a case to be made not to vote so this "vote or die" stuff is stupid.

the argument: how is a ill-informed vote better then a non-vote ?

it's it . Don't vote if you don't know what the hell you are doing! simple.

Why, oh, WHY, can't the US get it's head out of its *** and make it easier there to be more political parties to choose from. For example, there are 13 to choose from in Denmark, and Europe is full of such examples. Every vote counts there.

As it is, for example, you get the fiscal conservatives yet social progressives lumped together with the religious nutters, on the right, for example, in the US. Doesn't make sense to lump these groups together. There needs to be more parties, surely.

I wasn't implying you shouldn't vote for who you want to vote for -- go ahead. BUT, what I will say is that when you are voting for extreme positions (and yes, I like some points that libertarians make, but it is an extreme position), you are basically taking yourself out of the mix at a national level. Extreme positions don't change overnight, and they certainly aren't going to change because 6% of people happened to not like the current batch of candidates.

My suggestion is you focus on the local level, you'll get more bang for your buck, and you won't spend your time and energy punching out a ticket for Barr/Nader/etc/etc.

Lastly, I think one faulty assumption you make are that people are afraid to vote their "conscience". Again, I may agree with some element of libertarianism, but on the whole it is way to extreme for me versus my beliefs. I believe most people are like me. Being a Libertarian will succeed once views are modified to dovetail more with the mainstream.

Prime minister Margaret Thatcher, talking to Women's Own magazine, October 31 1987

"I think we've been through a period where too many people have been given to understand that if they have a problem, it's the government's job to cope with it. 'I have a problem, I'll get a grant.' 'I'm homeless, the government must house me.' They're casting their problem on society. And, you know, there is no such thing as society. There are individual men and women, and there are families. And no government can do anything except through people, and people must look to themselves first. It's our duty to look after ourselves and then, also to look after our neighbour. People have got the entitlements too much in mind, without the obligations. There's no such thing as entitlement, unless someone has first met an obligation."

What else is there to say?

I love watching celebs that make $20MM a pop complain about the financial climates. I also love folks that fly around in private jets complain about the environment.

Regardless, you have to vote. Even if you abstain, you should do it by casting a white ballot not by not showing up.

If you don't want to vote for a party but don't want everyone to accuse you of being lazy, not respecting those who fought for your right to vote, etc, just turn up and spoil your ballot. Writing in "none of the above" is simple and to the point.

I never get this. Why does everyone encourage everyone else to vote? If people can't be bothered to vote, let them not vote. That way their unmotivated and likely uninformed vote will not dilute mine. The only people who should vote are those who actual care enough to do it, and know enough to know what they're voting about.

Just wanted to share my thoughts. Full disclosure: I tend to lean liberal, registered democrat and will vote for Obama/Biden.

I understand the need for alternatives to the Democrat and Republican party. I'm all for it.

I understand the mess we are in right now was caused by both Democrat and Republican law makers, the president's failed leadership and failed policies and the American people's addition to oil and credit.

The question now is, which candidate can best fix the mess?

If you say "neither" and you don't vote, then I'm afraid you did not think hard enough.

If US govt healthcare is going to be so much more effective than private healthcare, why isn't it?

After all, about half of US residents that have healthcare get it from the US govts. And the cost to do so is the same as the private sector gets to cover the other folks that are covered. In other words, US govts provide healthcare for the same cost as the private system.

And, by strange coincidence, the "health quality" of folks who get their care from US govts is the same as it is for folks who get their healthcare through the private system.

If you're going to argue that US govts can provide healthcare more efficiently or better, shouldn't you first fix govt healthcare so it actually is more efficient or better? Then all you have to do is open up the system at cost and folks will flee the private system.

If, on the other hand, you can't or won't fix US govt healthcare so it has the properties that you promise, why should we believe that you can and will once you get your your hands on the rest of the population?

So the problem only starts when the bomb is about to explode? So I guess we don't have any issues with any of the other unfunded liabilities out there because the US government can still sell treasuries? What a moron...go max out your credit cards...you won't have any problem at all for a few months. Please tell us what startup you are involved in so I know not to invest.

And I'm not saying that this wasn't a bipartisan problem...but its not fair for all the libs going off on the "Bush policies" that got us in this mess.

Let the banks and financial institutions who made shoddy deals fail and let the economy correct itself on its own. Government stay out of it. Use the 700 billion to create jobs and improve our infrastructure, not bail out reckless financial companies

The reality is that most people like yourselves are the disenfranchised but the reality of it is is that your lazy. you claim that it wont make difference and its just what the opposition wants you to believe so as you and your like minded friends out there think that your vote wont count your right because your not voting and the opposition is counting, counting on you not voting.

Your comment is one of ignorance and selfishness. its your right to vote and your going to just throw it away, You should just pack your bags and hop on the next plane out of the country.

Voting is one of the most important things you can do in your life. There are many other countries out there where voting is forbidden or severly frowened upon with consequences of jail and or death for voting against the ruling elite.

Yeah throw away your citizenship, who needs citizens like you anyways get on a boat and commit political suicide.

What's the point? Because there are a ton of people in your state that say the SAME EXACT THING! And those people winning in your state love it that way. If you decide to get off your ass maybe you won't win in a month, but the percentage won't be as huge which gives even more people a reason to try next time and maybe at least then you can change.

I live in Washington state and before 1988, we were a solid Red color. But slowly we came around and we've voted Democrat for every Presidential candidate since. Though, we've only won by a few hundred thousand or less votes every year. So we Dems can't just know that we'll always vote that way and stay home either.

Do something. What will it hurt? At least it will give you a right to complain the next four years which you should forfeit if you stay at home and play video games for an hour more of your life instead of trying to make this place better.

At least Register now so you have the option to vote next month when you might care instead of throwing away your chance this week!
