YouTube has been criticized in the past for not offering the experience already being offered on services like Viddler or Vimeo where users can upload large file sizes and input video information while it’s being uploaded. But in an announcement that should make its users happy, YouTube has finally seen the light and has started offering a new Upload process redesign that will more effectively compete with other services in the space.
According to the company, the new video uploader, which has been in private beta for some time, is now available to any users who wish to opt-in. Once users opt-in to the new uploader, they will quickly find that they can input metadata like the clip’s name, description, and tags while it’s uploading, as well as upload multiple videos at once to streamline the uploading process. More importantly, the new YouTube uploader will allow users to upload files up to 1GB in size, instead of its previous 100MB limit.
Much of these features were already available from other services, but it indicates that YouTube really does have a view of what’s going on in the market and wants to stay competitive in that space even though it’s still the de facto leader.

Well it’s about time, what about HD content, yeah HD not Higher Quailty but HI – Definition Content… Like Vimeo – http://www.vimeo.com/hd
Youtube could have been doing that kind of HD a long time ago.. Well at least the 1GB sounds nice…
Vimeo doesn’t really offer HD. IIRC, Vimeo offers HD resolution at SD bitrates. 1280×720 VP6 encodes at 1500Kbps. It ends up looking about as good as DVD might. True HD would require a bitrate at least twice that high. The idea that resolution makes a video HD is just dumb. If I encode something at 1920×1080 @ 700Kbps, is that HD too?
The reality is that YouTube’s quality is just appauling. 320×240 @ 400Kbps VP3 ecnode IIRC for most of their stuff. That’s like half of what “standard definition” is. Less, actually. So by comparison, anything is HD when measured against YouTube.
@crazyglues. All in time this will happen. YouTube has plenty of it.
youtube has the market share clearly. but it is quite clear their technology is a step behind the rest it seems like they are playing catch up instead of being the front runners in the space.
I think that could be said for the largest organizations in most any industry; once they develop a large user base, improvements become a lot more time-consuming and tedious (and thus less frequent) as they necessitate large scale changes in infrastructure / process / etc. the little guys don’t have to worry about this — just update a couple servers and they’re good to go. if anything, i’m pretty impressed by the frequency of Google’s release cycles on most of their products (though i’ll admit youtube is a bit of a laggard)
If you want to share videos, without file size limitation and even without uploading it first, use http://www.SeeToo.com.
It also enables you to watch the video simultaneously with friends, as if on the same screen.
I think it is about time. On the other hand, I have already automated all my uploads with Firefox and the iMacros extension.

I just place the videos in a directory, start the macro and go drink a coffee
Could I get you a tea or help you find the 101?
You californians are annoying, one does need an adjective (an article) to modify these nouns.
What are you talking about? Its an acceptable colloquialism in my opinion. Commentators should strive for brevity. If he changes the sentence to read “in the directory”, then he must describe which directory he is speaking of (it’s name, location, purpose, etc.) or else he has failed to communicate in anything more than a ruminative, hard-to-decipher fashion.
Saying he placed the file in “a directory”, though, allows you to assume that a directory has already been created, located somewhere on his computer, and owing to that colloquialism his comment stays mercifully brief.
Hey queentard-
The reference was to a coffee (not directory). “I’m going to go get some coffee” or “I need a cup of coffee” are typical in the US. When referencing a highway or interstate, it is not neccesary to use the article “the” and the presumption in my comment was that dipshit probably used the phrase “the 101″ at some point. Clearly there is no reason to use the article ‘the’ prior to the name of a well-known, local highway, or an interstate.
Tits or GTFO.
Want some soda, pop? Or a pop, dad?
Well, congrats to the YouTube team. While they’re lucky to have the Google juggernaut’s resources, as detailed in anotehr TC article, they have clearly lacked the startup-style quickness under their corporate umbrella.
Vimeo’s HD is so sweet….youtube should totally have this. It seems like they are making some good quality steps towards it
I love the idea of having to do high quality stuff on You-Tube rather then any where else. Because it is accessed by more people and is much more recognized. Why change a provider if you don’t ahve to..
Well, 1 Gig is nothing new. This has been in place for some time, but there is still the 10 Min restriction. Does anybody know since when, YouTube offers the “Higher Quality” Option?. I discovered this only a month ago.
I wish there was some way to have podcasts from them.
Wow, its about time, I can do alot with 1GB.
Youtube is not only a video sharing site. It has a serious video archive in many languages. Youtube is the new “TV” and i think, it will start to add live streaming of World Wide every tv channel to it’s database soon.
Techcrunch-FAIL!!!!! 1 GB is old, old, old – OLD!!!
Maybe Techcrunch doesn’t think it exists unless it’s on the internets.
(YouTube has allowed for multiple uploads, up to 1GB each using a custom Windows-only app since Nov ‘07…)
I’ve been aware of and using the Youtube 1GB limit for a few months now. I’d really like them to increase the visual quality of their videos though to match some of the other sites eg. Vimeo.
Maybe they’ll go HD someday in the future.
Big deal.
It’d be nice if the expanded their file formats (such as 3GP2) as well.
This has been available for about a year or so: http://pulse2.c...le-1gb-uploads/ !!!!!
Fail
Good to see YouTube keeps improving. The recent Wii commercial is another big hit.
That as a bad ass ad thou. agreed
Now if only they would fix their audio compression, it is horrible!
