[...] Wal-Mart Closes DRM System: Sorry, Your Songs Are Toast This just shows, with DRM you don’t really owe the songs, just rent them. If the retailer shuts up its scheme, suddenly the music’s not yours anymore. And people wonder why I prefer buying the CD and having it in my hot little hands … (tags: drm music ecommerce) [...]

Most people still don't know wth DRM is. Expect no outcry, or not enough to rise above the din of other pressing matters on the American brain.

I generally don't have problems with DRM. If a company is going to shut down their online music business. They should be forced to either grant full refunds before turning off the authentication servers. If they have replacement versions that are DRM free, they should be forced to provide free downloads of content previously purchased by the customers.

Same thing goes for games that require online activations. They should have a legal obligation to provide a patch that disables any activation requirements before shutting down the servers. Maybe they should be required to develop such things BEFORE the game is released. That way, in the event the company goes under or whatever, they don't have to pay for development time.

I am so surprised there has not been a class action lawsuit against a company for pulling crap like this.

Clearly this is smaller than the Microsoft DRM shutdown, but still... I'd like to say "whatever, if you bought DRM-crippled music in the first place you deserve what you get," but until public understanding of what you're giving up reaching some critical mass I don't think that's fair to do.
