[...] Just how much is Apple willing to keep everyone in the dark? Freeverse was able to tap undocumented SDK features to give their demo TV-out capability. To what degree will Apple allow its developers—and customers—to tap the iPhone’s TV-out functionality? Will they give programmers free reign to maximize it, or limit this ability for the its own sake? [...]

That's right! Get off your high horse you coder guys. Just write your code and submit it to the high priest. He and only he in his infinite wisdom will decide if your application is worthy. If it isn't then it's your fault and you should be thankful your were even permitted to submit your worthless bits.

Never give up. Suffer in silence. Abide by the developer agreement. Don't ask for more. This is the new American way. And, if we catch you developing for Android ... well ... I just can't talk about that.

@Convictus
I am making my (similar) arguments to different commenters.

No rules do not make sense to just those in power, in makes sense to all. I never said I had a problem with people questioning rules, far from it. My point was anyone is free to disagree with Apple's policy and if you do, show your disagreement and discontinue your development for the App Store. It's all the wining and moaning in trying to force your "right to everything" view on others by trying to open the App Store I have a problem with. If you like your "openness" you have Android amongst others, so leave the App Store alone to those who freely choose to use a "closed" system.

Vote with your feet (Apps) by developing on other platforms and if you are right then Apple and all those who choose to use the "closed" system will suffer, and concede to your system or vise versa. That is how freedom does and should work. Not by a bunch of tree hugging TechCrunch hippies trying to force every technology out there to their way of thinking, read all my posts and you will find evidence this.
Nor do I agree with the argument of it costs developer time/money to develop and only to find out they cannot sell it. Well guess what that how its always been in business, 90% of businesses/ideas and products fail with wasted time and money, welcome to the real world. People who start their business know and accept that why can't the (some) development community.

With an Apple "closed" and approval (and kill switch) process it completely eradicates the possibility of a iPhone virus academic. A process you TechCrunch hippies would love to abolish.

I am not going to go into your McCarthy comment, other then a quick google search I do not know anything about him as I am not American nor will I ever be or attempt to be. Though I respect Americans to practice and participate in their own laws I personally do not agree with a lot of American laws. Thus I freely/choose/vote with my feet and do not reside there.

I hope this is rational enough for you, ironic as most of the against App Store camp seem to be comments from teenagers who a posting their view without reasoning. Most seem to be it's wrong or immoral, well thats just your own ideology and doesn't hold in an argument.

Finally, at least another opinion is voiced!

I enjoy that the iPhone can be two devices - one, a stable, managed platform that a consumer can just buy and use and one that, if you choose to, you can jailbreak and have your way with it.

Best of both worlds in my opinion, but relevant to the article, nobody is forcing anyone to develop for the iPhone app store. Apple may need to and probably will clarify the rules - the platform is only a few months old as far as development goes.

that's funny. when people complain about stupid things Microsoft does, everyone backs them up and get all excited. Now when people complain about something stupid Apple does some people get all crabby and "outraged" to the point of writing this crappy article on a great site like this. WOW! Honestly?! It makes me laugh.

I love how you think systematically repeating the same argument will make your point more valid.

Civil rights protesters had no right to question the rules that held them down?

Rules make sense for those in power, questioning rules is the only way to bring about change. The vocal questioning of policy and rules is how you get to shape the world around you. I think McCarthy is finding voice here in you.

Now I am certainly not trying to make light of the two analogies I pulled, but I hope you see the connection to your insistence that we, or anybody for that matter, question rules. Aside from invoking the specter of "virus" and trying to associate it with open development, I have not heard a pro come out of your for the closed platform. Tearing down the opposition and floating the possibility that changing the rules would destabilize the platform is not equal to a rational discussion. So realizing rational discussion is not your purpose here, what is it that makes the close system so valuable to you?

TechCrunch is full of tree hugging wining cry babies who bang of about freedom of choice but want to force their views on everyone else.

Guess what, by doing this Apple is not breaking the law. It it morally wrong from your (tree hugging right to everything) point of view. And it's ok to have that view, as long as your not trying to force Apple into following your views, just as Apple isn't trying to force you to develop for their platform.

I would love to get a reply from a TechCrunch hippie on this, 'cos from what I've witnessed on all the other comments before it they don't seem to replay intelligent arguments. Other then it should be our way 'cos were right 'cos we say so.

"So if Microsoft were to disallow a developer who created a better office suite than MS’s own from distributing it to Windows users, presumably you’d have no problem with that?"

Yes I'd have a problem with it but instead of moaning and wining like a bunch of babies, I'd move on to a different platform say like MAc OS X. And let Microsoft face the ramification of its choice, which may turn out to be to its advantage or to it downfall.

"To those that do not like Apple’s NDA, GOOD RIDDANCE. They obviously have written either applications in bad taste or which break the guidelines or which copy Apple’s own iPhone services. They were NOT thinking differently or creatively enough."

So if Microsoft were to disallow a developer who created a better office suite than MS's own from distributing it to Windows users, presumably you'd have no problem with that?

Trouble is, if no-one is allowed to improve upon the functionality of a whole range of iPhone software because it puts them in competition with Apple, then consumers will be left with a device which fails to fulfill its inherent capabilties. From what I understand, Podcaster was one such app which provided superior functionality to Apple's offering. Unfortunately iPhone users won't get to find out for themselves.

Hey ho. Musn't grumble.

as soon as there's a competitor up and running, this type of totalitarian run system will not stand long.

we only have to lick their boots until someone plows another road that leads to the same holy land. then it's hasta la vista.

stop developing it as an app to try and make a buck. make a webapp that you can install, charge on your own site for it, and bypass apple.

simple.

CORRECTION: The App Store has distributed over 100 Million Apps in the FIRST TWO MONTHS of its existence. It distributed 30 million in the first month, 70 million in the second month.

How much has the App Store sold by now? A lot more.

Consumers are NOT SCARED off by the problems with the developer NDA.

Instead, Consumers are making MILLIONAIRES out of many developers. The ability to make hundreds of thousands of dollars from a simple application (simpler than a desktop application), using a free development kit, without having to do heavy marketing of your product is fuel enough for thousands of developers to write iPhone applications.

To those that do not like Apple's NDA, GOOD RIDDANCE. They obviously have written either applications in bad taste or which break the guidelines or which copy Apple's own iPhone services. They were NOT thinking differently or creatively enough.

If a developer is CREATIVE AND ORIGINAL, he or she realizes that Apple's guidelines and NDA and any arbitrariness in application acceptance are EASY to comply with. And that there an unlimited number of applications to write for the iPhone.

I applaud Apple's focus on the consumer's experience. Numerous friends have already bought and downloaded over 100 applications from the App Store. I did not realize until recently that I had downloaded 100+ applications. That is amazing. The Apple App Store makes the process of downloading and installing applications so much FUN, I have already installed more apps in the first two months of owning my iPhone 3 G than my Mac or Windows machines.

The App Store is such a selling monster compared to any other online sales machine, that any developer wanting to make a lot of money has to realize that Apple's guidelines are really minor problems compared to the potential income generation from the iPhone 3G. THIS is the main reason to develop for the iPhone 3G - aside from just LOVING the system.
