Having moved to Austin seven years ago, I was here when the bubble burst — and have witnessed the slow decline of the tech sector since then. IMHO, there’s no sign of a recovery, or even the start of one.

That said, the upside in our market may be the blossoming film industry. Previously known for small Indie film projects, we’re now seeing large budget projects like “The Tree of Life” — directed by Terrence Malick, featuring Sean Penn and Brad Pitt cast in the primary roles.

Robert Rodriquez pioneer work with 2K and 4K Digital high-end cameras (Sin City and Grind House) is particularly noteworthy. The emerging Digital Cinema segment within the entertainment industry is perhaps one arena where Austin — and its evolving talent pool — can regain some economic development momentum.

you guys used to have the forums section, what happened to it?

also, if you really want to tie techcrunch readers together, create a email list/social networking app, as well as a virtual bizdev function. throw together a few servers, let people come together to create the development environment (under the auspices of techcrunch) and sit back and watch what grows.!!

give me an email, and a contact, and i’ll forward more information on what i’m considering…

Texas sucks… So glad to leave the armpit of America! and yes Austin is the “Best place in Texas” but so is the corn in my crap. Does not mean that I want to hang out there. Never in my life have I met (and subsequently attempted be screwed by) more “religious” and “promise keepers” people.
