These companies are well funded because they went to the effort of putting business plans together and coming up with ways to use technology.

in particular, imeem’s tagline is ‘what’s on your playlist’ – imeem pretty much built its user base around being able to upload music and make playlists, so there were investors who clearly believed this could be turned into a legitimate business. muxtape essentially borrowed this one feature and built a site around it, and it’s not the only site to do this (playlist.com, mixwit, 8tracks) if you’re an investor you’re going to see that muxtape’s entire serivce doesn’t stand out from the market leader, nor it’s competition.

Yes it sucks that the record industry makes such ridiculous demands for licensing music, but Justin knew all about this when he was putting his ‘business’ together.

I don’t quite understand why Muxtape got any coverage. It never made any effort to protect the MP3s people uploaded, meaning anyone could download the originals just by viewing the HTML source.

I never really found Muxtape’s service to be all that interesting. They labeled themselves a ‘music discovery’ site, but offered no practical means of discovering music other than randomly clicking on links. There was no search or recommendation functionality, and the core service was little more than being able to listen to mp3s. Also, I side with the RIAA in this case. Muxtape encouraged piracy and was illegal. The only reason the site became popular is because Jakob Lodwick was an investor. The new service sounds like a MySpace Music page but without the community features. Quite lame. The kid has some connections so he may get some press, but I don’t think he is going to make any $.
