Thanks, Jon (just saw this) One thing that might throw a wrench in this: it may have to be running in the “foreground” to work. I need something that is running all the time (in the background) that beeps me at a location. Not sure if iphone has the multitasking cability to do that.

How about a Blackberry link via bluetooth so you can use your the Dash to utilize the BB’s addressbook to find locations on the Dash GPS unit. Also have a selection in the Dash to allow the Dash to send address and direction info to BB it there is a dash initiated search that you want to keep with you in your BB and to sync to your pc later on.

How about being leveraging the Dash’s access to the web to allow it to be able to connect to your internet enabled home video cameras so you can see what your pet is doing while you are on the road (an off the wall idea but is an interesting concept, yes? ))))

I have created a number of apps for the dash GPS. However they are currently not accessable to dash users because dash removed my developer account since I no longer own a Dash Express.

Here are some of the ones I have already made:
#1 Conquer The World – Game that lets you compete with other to claim land.
#2 iTrackr – search for hard to find items like the nintendo wii and know what stores near by have them in stock.
#3 Garage Sales – find garage sales that are near by
#4 Gmail – Read your gMail messages on the dash.
#5 Local Info – get information about your current location
#6 Local Radio – get local AM and FM radio stations along with the last 5 songs played.
#7 Local Traffic – get traffic incidents near by.
#8 Open Frequency – Find out what frequency’s are best to use in your current location for FM radio transmitters.
#9 Sex Offenders – Find out if there are any sex offenders that live near by.
#10 Stocks – view how your stocks are doing.
#11 Time & Date – Displayes the current time and date along with how much time is left until different holidays.
#12 Track My Dash – Runing this app will send an email to you with a map of the GPS’s current location.
#13 Weather Underground – get current weather conditions as well as forecasts.
#14 Yahoo local – get better results then the defualt yahoo local search.

I would like the ability to login to any device and retrieve my personal settings. For example when I am using my wifes car for the day. Maybe a rental car that uses DASH Express. Once these things start getting built into a car this will be even more important.

How about a sale finder for items that you are in the market for? Of course it would be for B&M stores only, but you could link it to deal sites such as Slick Deals or Fat Wallet so that you get an alert when that 52 inch 1080p LCD or plasma TV goes on sale at the price point you’ve been waiting for at a store that’s within a (insert distance here) mile radius of your present position.

The only thing it’s missing is the ability to call it from my cell and input an address. (voice entry).

I’ve had telenav through nextel(sprint) since 2004 and I won’t give it up until a
reasonably priced GPS unit does this.

Your unit has all the other features I need.

Speed Trap Warning/Notification

Anytime you see a speed trap (police with radar gun out, one of those radar + camera mail you a ticket deals, etc.) you simply press an “alert” button on the Dash’s map.

The coordinates and time stamp are sent to a server. The server collects all the incoming speed trap alerts and displays a heat map based on number of alerts coming in, how recently they were reported, etc. and then overlays that heatmap on your normal map screen (should you choose to enable it).

Over time, with enough data collected, the app could also display “potential speed traps” that alert drivers to spots where police are often spotted, but there may not have been any sightings reported to the server in the the last X minutes which would normally trigger a red zone on the heat map.

The app would also tap the Dash’s speedometer reading and compare that against the heat map. A voice alert could be activated to warn you of potential speed traps when your speed is more than 5 mph over the posted limit – in case you weren’t paying attention to the heatmap on screen because you might be doing something like, I don’t know, talking on your cell phone.

I live in Seattle, WA though, where traffic fans out across all lanes and travels an infuriatingly slow 10 mph under the speed limit. So maybe the app can also have a feature that harnesses the power of the cars internal combustion engine into a big laser that destroys anyone going severely under the speed limit in the left lane.

John, I’ve been working on that exact idea now for 2 years. See http://www.junglejam.tv which covers video guides of individual buildings and landmarks in a place detailing the history or even modern story of the subject being shot.
Strangley though, TechCrunch have shunned my attempts to have a look at my site and instead cover all the usual ‘travel sites’ that seem to follow eachother around the block!

yes, i have also been thinking about this idea.. connecting it to the iphone so everyone can see the info would be great. Also having the system send you a message to let you know that you should move your car for street cleaning, remind you to add money to the meter… would be killer

ParkSpot is great, i have been thinking about such a feature for some time.For the idea to work well, it need to be done all automatically whiteout the intervention of the drive. It would also be a good idea to have this available on the iphone for people that do no have a Dash mobile. This will increase the amount of people that can use the service. Not everyone has a dash, but a few more people have iphones. I was initially thinking about having the whole system on iphone, but having people indicate when they leave a parking spot consitentlly will be hard. Therefore a combination of iphone and Dash would be great

How about having a tourist mode in GPS. Say if someone has set the destinations to Yosemite. The GPS application will give a concise information about all the tourist attractions on the way. Now you can decide what are the places of your interest. And GPS will take you there. This application can gather data about how many Dash GPS users liked some place or the review about that place. So that other user can decide based on other visitors review.

How about an app that logs your miles for tax purposes at the end of the year, uploads the info to a website that you or your accountant can access.

Activate the dash.
Set it to work mode.
Miles are recorded and uploaded to your account.
At the end of the year you have a report of all your work miles.

When following driving directions from the Dash and identifying that there is construction, a road/bridge out-of-service, or plain incorrect road information, it would be great to call up a Dash app that would display the current road map on the touchscreen and allow the user to either mark the areas of construction/out-of-service or re-draw the road information. This would allow for real-time updates on road information that Dash (and their traffic & maps providers) can use to better the product. Go Dash!
