[...] Windows Mobile only: Skyfire, a browser for Windows Mobile that supports Flash, Ajax, and many media formats, has been released for public beta downloads with an upgraded 0.8 version. The biggest interface change is a Chrome-like universal address bar, which acts as search input when non-URL text is entered, but Skyfire also added one-click SMS sharing, which auto-shrinks URLs for text message space. Our sibling site Gizmodo points out that Skyfire out-races Safari and Opera’s mobile versions on the web, but mostly because Skyfire’s servers are pre-optimizing common pages.
Does this technology still require banks and banks of proxy servers that do the heavy lifting (Flash, Java crunching) to serve up the pages to users mobiles, or has that changed?

And if not, is this the reason why the technology has not yet rolled out beyond the USA?

Would this also explain the latency, and also hint at a "single point of failure" issue much like the RIM Blackberry NOC servers in Canada?

I was involved in the Alpha testing. For the nascent, all beta's are flops. That's the idea. Provide feedback. The most concentrated gripes by customers are usually what gets taken care of first. Be aware, Skyfire hasn't been around long. Meanwhile, the grandp Opera Mini still doesn't support half the things that Skyfire does. And Opera mini is official! As long as the name beta is attached to the product expect to see things that make it a flop. Hell GMail is still beta, and it blows still to this day.

I really like skyfire. With Opera on win mobile device, I hated visiting the multimedia sites, but thanks to skyfire, things have changed. Really nice browser.

Their site clearly indicates that you can install via email and PC, yet after registering, you only get the option for SMS. Maybe their marketing strategy is collecting emails and phone numbers to sell.

Don't waste your time. I was involved in the beta and it's a huge flop. Their site is slow, when it actually works. The software (that took many attempts before it downloaded successfully) requires a login every time you use it and doesn't work with a proxy. So you're required to monkey around with your phone's connection settings because they were too lazy to make it work right. There are countless other reasons it's a flop, just check out all the complaints in the forum on their site.

If Skyfire still requires a port other than 80 it is going to be a non-starter with the masses. Not everyone (in the USA) has a data plan but many do have web browsing via port 80.

It hasn't opened to everyone yet, still requires a US mobile number. :(

I know I'm not as smart as their CTO, but I just can see how this can scale. Flash 9 and Silverlight support implies that they are running a Windows session and sharing the screen in some manner similar to VNC (with, I assume, a bunch of optimizations). Even with virtualization, how can they keep the overhead of the Windows OS in line, and what if you visit a malicious website, will it infect their servers? I assume they have answers to these questions because they are now out of beta. I wonder if they plan on offering their architecture to developers to make other sharable desktop like apps for mobile devices, it could be a compelling run time. You get desktop performance and connectivity and your users can access the full application from any mobile device. Just a thought.

Uh oh!
Not open for everybody..

Asks for Telephone number and mentions the code as [+1], means just for U.S. people.

Asians miss it.
