Richard, your forgetting one very important thing. THIS IS NOT JUST A PHONE.
This is for games, movies and music too.

Do you honestly expect everyone who wants to watch a movie on a plane or play a game or listen to music while exercising to go and buy some sort of 3.5mm jack to USB adapter (if such a thing exists) or whatever else is needed?

Trust me, lack of a headphone jack will be in the Top 3 complaints from consumers and Google/T-Mobile WILL modify future designs to include one.

Oh give it a rest, you and all you other "but it's got no 3.5mm jack" whingers.

3.5mm jacks aren't used on devices because they're bigger than their USB counterparts and mean you need to have two ports (one for headphones and one for syncing and charging) - both of which affect the size and thickness of the device.

Secondly, with a 3.5mm jack you won't be able to have a hands-free with more than one button.

Thirdly, even if you did have a 3.5mm jack and plugged your headphones into the device - forget making hands-free calls with your headphones on because you'll have to hold your phone's microphone to your face as you won't have one embedded in the cable.

Lack of 3.5mm is only an issue if they don't come with a hands-free which allows you to plug in your own. Only the very cheapest phones these days have this restriction.

There are issues with the G1, but this isn't one of them.

FWIW I was at Carnegie Mellon in 97-98 as well (96-2000) and the UNIX machines weren't "dumb terminals." There were SunOS/Solaris, IRIX, Linux, and HPUX machines. They all ran the distributed filesystem AFS which might be the confusion. Well except the PCs and Macs which kinda made them really only useful for e-mail.

Quote: "it looks like we’re seeing an epic paradigm shift in the mobile space. iPhone started the ball rolling and Android is about the finish the job." Google's Android is finishing the job?? By essentially taking the same concept that Apple took?

Apple popularized the direction mobile computing has been heading for at least 15 years, since the advent of Apple's Newton, through Palm, Handspring, etc. Google's Android has done nothing more than create a duplicate alternative to the iPhone platform. Nothing revolutionary to see hear, folks.

As with all Apple products, basic usability is what makes the iPhone. Ask a soccer mom to use a Treo or a Windows Mobile device and you'll see what I'm talking about. There were computers before the Macintosh, but it was the Mac that put UI into the hands of the average person.

I'm excited to see where the upcoming competition between Apple and Google will take us. To this point there has not been a real competitor (in my opinion) to the iPhone...the Blackberry could have been but is simply too far behind/too isolated to the business niche.

i really cant see anything that this phone, or the iphone can do that a winmo phone hasnt been able to do for the last 5 years or so. yeh, these are packaged better, and the overall expirience may be better, but really, nothing is very different

"iPhone started the ball rolling" -wow that's pretty amazing. I mean if I had a dime for every person that attributed the world of mobile computing to apple...holy jeebus. And so as not to draw the criticisms of the anti WinMo crowd....wow did no one ever see an original Treo or a Samsung i300???? I mean sorry but while I would agree that in some respects, Apple proved very successful, they certainly didn't break much ground technologically especially where hardware was concerned.

No local sync or any way to tie into Outlook kind of kills this. Sure, GApps is nice, but by forcing it to only use GApps essentially makes this a fancy feature-phone, not a true smartphone. Realistically smartphones have to have *some* way of interfacing with Outlook. Doesn't have to be full Exchange sync, but at least a local sync is like a minimum requirement.
