Take a closer look at what? It’s a Digg clone, no two ways about it. It’s Digg with less users, less attractive, less comments, less stories and a few added feature that they *think* users might want.

These days if you want to rip off Digg, you have to do it right. Both the guys behind Yahoo! Buzz and Mixx knew that if you wanted to rip off Digg, you have to do it right from the start if there is ever going to be a shred of hope at the end of the tunnel. You can’t start with less and hope that users will see past that—because they won’t.

The most impressive thing about Socialmedian isn’t the site, but how much money a lone shark was able to raise. It’s a one man shop with an outsourced dev team, and he raised half a million dollars? For that he has my respect.

TC – show some integrity to your readers and stop promoting features that are copycat of other services.

Start asking questions like: What is the business model of SM? What user need is being solved by SM?

This is getting ridiculous.

Fail. I don’t understand why their stories are even covered here. SM seems to push out features just for the sake of saying they are pushing out features. This is not news. And their constant email newsletters are annoying. Epic fail.

@Yogi I agree… Socialmedian.com’s design is SO similar to digg I had to double-take too.

But then again, with the advent of pligg.com (open source digg clone), this kind of thing was inevitable.

The feature does seem helpful for promoting discussions around articles/posts. I would think that other news sites and blogs will or already have features that facilitate direct replies and discourse. Although, if we have too any @name features, i’d think we’d have more problems with online identity. This would probably make online identity aggregators or single sign-on providers more useful in coming months.
