I used to love Macs and hate PCs... but the commercial Mac placed on the front page of the NY Times made me want to throw up.

It was so insulting to my intelligence.

Lame try Microsoft. Like everything, the boys in Redmond think all they have to do is just stamp their name on something and it is automatically better. Why was Sean Siler selected for that commercial, isn't it obvious? Because in the second-rate, out-of-focus camera job, he looks something like John Hodgman from the Apple ads. From the opening line from that ad, the whole thing falls apart. The Apple ads are cool and, every Windows user, and professional technician, like myself, can relate to the content in them. Who can really relate to the Microsoft ads, unless you are one of the lock-step masses who think its the ultimate in your face to say more of us automatically makes us better and smarter.

But go through the images in the commercials and, if you are a learned individual, begin to see the chinks in the armor. They show military personnel and even a mission specialist from a Space Shuttle mission.

If you know anything about military hardware and the stuff that they load up on things like the shuttle, you know that our best engines of war and exploration depend on proven technology, that may be just a little less than today's latest and greatest, powered by UNIX.

Microsoft has a number of times attempted to get the Department of Defense to allow them to design systems for various branches of the military and civilian agencies. There has yet to be a successful test where total or even critical systems could be trusted to a Windows based platform without dire consequences. Nothing has made it past a full-scale test.

To be fair, there is nothing, yet in use, in these same agencies with these same delivery platforms based on an OS X system, either, but earlier this year Apple purchased Taligent from IBM, the foundry that builds the PowerPC chips Apple used to use in its desktop and notebook systems. The only reason given for this could be found in some of Apple's patent filings. It appears that Apple is longing to expand their dominance on the government's high-end desktop and notebook installations and hoping to move to meet their Unix-based field deployments for the military and civilian agencies, as well.

Funny, you didn't see a nuclear submarine or the shuttle, itself, saying, "I'm a PeeCee."

We here at Visible Measures just finished up a head-to-head viral video analysis of the Microsoft campaign, pitting the Seinfeld / Gates duo against the "I'm a PC" World. We found that, despite the criticism on the Seinfeld front (that's a shame), it's out-performing the feel-good response to Apple's "Get a Mac" campaign... by more than 4 million viral video views! Sure, the Seinfeld / Gates clips came out first, but in normalizing the data we discovered that the "I'm a PC" clips generated barely half the views of the Seinfeld / Gates videos in the same amount of days. Wow! Perhaps Microsoft will bring Seinfeld back? Who knows. Come by our site and check out our blog to learn more about the campaign's performance!

Macs are better at easing computer illiterates into computing. e.g. you Paul. I see your point about customer service, but I am truly ignorant to it because I never had to call customer service for fixing, modifying or setting up my computer. P.S. you can get free computer help on the net with basic research skills.
