Once you’re done turning your iPhone photos into works of art that Monet would be envious of, check out iGolf, a minutes-old app created by Palo Alto-based Social Gaming Network.
The application uses the iPhone’s accelerometer to detect a golf-swing like motion with the phone. Choose a club and swing the iPhone just like a golf club. Save your high scores and challenge your friends to beat your distance. Our best score with the driver so far is 406 yards.
The app is free, which will be appreciated by those of us who’ve spent untold numbers of quarters playing Golden Tee at the local bar. TechCrunch writer Jason Kincaid tests the app – see the video below.
Try not to throw your iPhone through the window while playing. But if you do throw your iPhone through a window, please send us a video of you doing it.
Update: We just got screenshots of the unreleased next version of iGolf, which lets users play simulated games in addition to the driving range app:

Reminds me of all the broken TVs caused my the Wiimote. When’s the first KO by Iphone going to appear on Youtube?
i nearly broke my hand playing tennis on the wii. hit a window frame. really wanted to win.
I cannot believe that technology is advancing so far and so fast that people are now able to play golf from their cell phones! What could next after this? I also wonder if having a wii-kind of set up on a cell phone is going a little too far…it almost takes all of the fun out of it! But it is going to be amusing to watch people swing randomly in public.
Mike can you please let me know whether I will get tickets or not , so that I can apply my leave depending on that
I was really nervous about accidentally throwing Mike’s phone out the window. Damn things are slippery..
you weren’t facing a window. you were facing me. glad it didn’t slip.
No slam Jason — but that swing wasn’t going to produce a 327 yd. drive ; )
true. he’s been talking about how he went to golf camp too.
Funny, but I would like to see someone people playing on the bus or the subway
who has enough time to play games on their phone? its bad enough walking around seeing people talk to themselves on bluetooth head sets, homeless guys are like “hey you stole my gig”, or like that dog collar for the imaginary dog, now we will see people playing imaginary golf, let the nut house flood gates open my friends, there are a lot of crazies out there……. i would really love to see a virtual dancing with the stars complete with accelerometer dips and twirls….
ur an idiot who has time to complain about games, u idiot u probably play world of warcraft masturbation expanson pack and im a stupid fuck for pc! and cant afford a iphone. sooooo buy something and stop being such a loser!
very funnyy …

Michael,

vidya
I’m glad to see a this game is free, because I think the game could get old pretty quickly. Where was this video shot at? Is this Mike’s houses?

First try and went 528 yards
stenson should be a professional comedian i blew milk out of my nose reading his post
to be accurate must be hard.
it seem like its just a driving range app.
Who the F is that guy in the video?
Will this be available as a d/l to the new nano with accelerometer?
Hmmm… doesn’t seem to work for lefties.
oh wow, good point. they should fix that.
After playing with it some more, it looks like it might sort of work for lefties after all, but it’s way too hit-and-miss… so to speak. If I don’t start with the phone pointed to the ground like the instructions say and instead press “Hit” holding the phone normally and then go straight up to the top of my backswing, I can get it to work about half the time. But starting from a normal stance with the phone down, I hit on my backswing just about every time.
I tried to go right-handed and got fairly similar results, though, so maybe I’m just a bad golfer!

Lefties are good in the next update. Thx.
I feel left out because I do not own an iPhone. When will I convert? Sigh.
Hey, I just got 625. Beat that all you Crunchies!
Sweet, I just hit 475 yards with my driver!
screenshot or it never happened.
hold the home button and click the power button and it puts a screen shot in your photo folder.
Did I win the Internet?

Datrio, if you waited 1 more minute for that screenshot you would have.
ok, a bit bummed its just a driven range, but effing cool – full game version coming soon?
see the update….
watch out wii
Sweet! But I can’t get beyond 180 yards no matter what I do, left or right handed. And forget about taking a normal swing.
Maybe the update will fix that, too.

COOOOL SHIT!!!! I WANT THIS!!!11!!!
I just love your house!
Could you review more business apps instead of games? {seesmic_video:{”url_thumbnail”:{”value”:”http://t.seesmic.com/thumbnail/8Han5UInmH_th1.jpg”}”title”:{”value”:”Could you review more business apps instead of games? ”}”videoUri”:{”value”:”http://www.seesmic.com/video/YTvAI2QUiC”}}}
Maybe you missed the fact that TC is mostly focused on consumer facing companies?
meh.
andrew this is the only iphone biz app you need {seesmic_video:{”url_thumbnail”:{”value”:”http://t.seesmic.com/thumbnail/PZ0CiCyeg5_th1.jpg”}”title”:{”value”:”andrew this is the only iphone biz app you need ”}”videoUri”:{”value”:”http://www.seesmic.com/video/CwATjALRCE”}}}
I agree.
This seems like a really cool application for a phone…but why do people need to have access to virtual golf at all times? I suppose if you’re a fanatic of sorts, this might be fitting…but really? How long can this wave of technology where better means smaller, faster, and more complicated continue before it just becomes stupid and meaningless?
It’s an aspirational sport for most people. The rich and powerful play golf, so I play golf.
Do they have any wii adult or porn game too. that you move and you move in TV so we can add it in http://www.hiadults.com
Awesome!
iGolf seems really cool, however I see problems for users. For instance as mentioned above while motioning a golf swing, it’s more than likely your phone will slip from your hand or go flying! No one wants a damaged iPhone.
this is lame after about 3 seconds. the jailbroken beer pong game that’s been out for months pwns this crap.
The iPhone should come with a hand tassle, I’m affraid to download this app for the whole reason I might end up flinging my iPhone while trying to break the 406 mark.
I find this application very interesting. Using the iPhone technology, the Social Gaming Network adapted to the newer, more advanced phone and made an interesting and fun game. Although no real problems are being solved, the Social Gaming Network found a way to make yet another entertaining application. I think it seems interesting, and since I own an iPhone, I just might check it out….
oh no Mike, still the old IKEA couch … if you want a cheap refreshment – you can buy a new cover for it. What about green and white stripes
iphone rules!
ENTERTAINMENT FOR EVERYONE : http://trinityl....wordpress.com/
I get it if i didn’t have a blackberry
Yep, it’s like playing tennis on a wii. Aslo try not to dislocate your hand and not to break the window or anything else that’s nearby while playing.
And you can still win a free iPhone 3g on Pikaba.com: http://www.pika...estRules.aspx?m
I love this idea because you no longer have to sit in front of a television screen to stroke it like the pros. I had no idea that the iPhone had the technology to measure a swing motion, and it was ingenious that the designers could include such a great idea. Now my friends have something to do while they wait 6 hours in line to get the updated iPhone.
The second app. I will be downloading that I’ve found in the last 5 minutes on TechCrunch. Sounds like a cool game, I’ll give it a shot!

423 yards, let’s see any of you top that. hehehehe
Dang, I just hit a Jason Zubeck like blast of 467.8yards
Okay holy cow i just bested that with a 511.3
439.0 Yards
Holy crap… i just threw my iphone across my yard… good thing I tried this outside otherwise i would have had a nice iHole in my wall… hold on tight!!
The ball always goes straight. It’s not much of a challenge.
I watched two of my friends lightsaber each of their phones crashing to the concrete. Makes you wonder if Apple is sponsoring these apps just to get idiots to wii-slam their phones to the ground.
Is this compatible with 1.1.4 jb iPhones/iTouch?
Wow… what will they think of next! For the golf enthusuiast, this is like a dream come true, virtually golf 24/7. Better hold on to that iPhone or it can turn into an expensive game.
Next the have to come out with a game where you can hold an iphone and/or ipod touch in each hand, let them connect via bluetooth, and then you can box like wii boxing!
