Who really needs one? Tracking devices.. If you realize that smartphones outsell PC's in the futures market you'll know why Google is desparate to join the game. I am happy enough to have a phone and a low cost plan, I don't need a phone that acts like a gameboy to keep me amused. $200??? Try $600 after it's all done with. 1 year Blackberry and I phone free! I feel alot better being less "in-touch"

T-mobile in the SF Bay Area has been down for a week. It's 'critical' status, but no fix date. Reports on the web shows regular T-mobile outages all over the country.

Rather than chasing the Google phone, I would like a working phone.

I played with one for an hour 3 weeks ago, and totally agree.

The mechanicals were nicely done, but the UI and industrial design made it look like a crude prototype. The configuration screens in particular were just awful, and there were some cryptic/conflicting UI conventions that just shouldn't have survived early development. Picture quality was crap.

I can't figure out why Google is letting this thing introduce the world to Android. It will just turn off consumers, carriers and potential HW developers.

I am currently an iPhone user (left T-Mobile for AT&T). A few things have to fall into place to make me switch.
1. If the T-Mobile 3G service improves in Portland, Oregon.
2. HTC G1 bugs are worked out.
3. Google’s application store must be as good as Apple.
Then I will pay whatever fee to terminate my contract and switch.

As someone who has gotten to play with test hardware and the Android OS I don’t see how this makes that big a splash at the same price point as the iPhone 3G. Maybe if you’re locked into T-Mobile already but since this is the price with a contract that doesn’t matter much (since the assumption would be a person who can sign up for a contract now isn’t currently tied to any given cell company by a contract)

I don’t mean to diss the HTC Dream but unless it is dramatically better than the test hardware/OS I saw a couple months back there’s just no way it compares to the relative refinement of the iPhone.

Honestly, $99 with a contract should be the max amount they are willing to charge.

Great news..iphone -- 8GB & 16GB will cost 775$ and 903$ respectively in India.

HTC Dream would provide great compitition when released in India. I know that, it will take long time to reach India, but still I hope to see it soon.

The UK newspaper The Telegraph has reported that T-Mobile UK will be the exclusive carrier to supply the HTC Dream aka G1 in the country, with the Android-based smartphone set to go on sale as early as November.

I still cannot believe that this is really the final design of the device. It's unchanged since Andy Rubin showed it off as a prototype to a BBC reporter in February. This means that HTC didn't change anything in seven months, although normally they are lightning fast. In the last three weeks HTC brought five smartphones with Windows Mobile to the market. The development cycle must have been very short because there were no leaks or previous announcements.

Maybe next Tuesday they will suprise us with a much fancier device? Like the recently confirmed HTC Ultimate Touch, but with Android? That would be great.
