Google’s Custom Search product, a customizable search engine for sites, has been down for at least some users for more than twelve hours. The popular service lets websites tailor Google search results and customize the results screen for their own look and feel.
Google’s own example sites seem to work fine, but, but some sites in the forum are pointing to their sites, which clearly aren’t working. A search simply refreshes the original page, with no results.
Even paying customers are down. SmugMug’s Custom Search site, for example, isn’t working either.
Google hasn’t yet returned an email request for comment.
Update: A Google spokesperson says “A small number of our users had difficulty accessing their Custom Search Engines today. We have now resolved the issue. We know how important the CSE platform is to our users, so we take issues like this very seriously, and we apologize for the inconvenience. We encourage anyone having technical difficulty to visit the Custom Search Help Center.”

Oh boy, smug mugs having lots of problems lately. First S3 now Google. What next?
What’s next? Hm let say Chrome crashes
google is not always the best on the net…
Did you expect Google to up 100% of the time? What is there to comment about?
I do not think Google or any other search engines can guarantee 100% uptime but 12 hours is a long time

It was almost 14 hours to get a response from them. They posted this an hour and a half ago on their forums:
Hi everyone,
Sorry for my delayed response, we’re looking into this now - thanks
for reporting. We suspect it’s being caused by a recent change we
pushed.

It affects people who use the cse overlay for search results.
@Dealyzer Yes.
It doesn’t look like there’s a problem on my site, people seem to be using the custom search.
Is it back online now?
Mine’s fine too…
Working fine here. Strange it would only affect certain sites.
Mine are working and I’d be crazy pissed if they weren’t!
That’s an unfortunate loss of revenue.
it’s beta, what do you expect? j/k
first, email service, now CSE
um… so what? services are going to go down sometimes… sa long sa its not often like hmmm twitter then what is the fuss about?
There is another problem with Google search that showed up today. When search is limited to a specific site, for some reason Google returns results from YouTube.

I guess it was already there !..
wow, big business like that could go down too. any big business will go down and small would not go because of less traffic
I was alarmed when I saw this article. But somehow my site is working fine. It is very new so there are not that many users yet (I hope to change that). And the speed is not affected either.

me too.. my website works just fine…
Is the implication that eventually, Google will be held to the same standards as that of Public Utilities?
testing
My Google news custom settings are gone too. Anyone else got that?
Really, I love Google and most of their products and I don’t expect 100% up time, but their technical support is awful. E-mails aren’t returned, there’s no phone number, no chat. Makes me crazy when something goes wrong!
Oh no - The world is ending!
When you post an update some mention of it really should be included in the teaser blurb of the article above the “Read Post” link
Users dont need to panic, its a small thing, effects only users who are using Ajax search/code to generate search results.
