[...] Apparently the new company is already valued at $2billion? The whole music industry in the USA (the only territory MySpace music has launched so far) had a total revenue of $6 billon in 2007 according to the IFPI. And that’s probably on product SHIPPED. Surely this alone should be a giant flashing warning sign for anyone with any minor degree of sanity? So I aside from 1 and 2 above, this is just sounding more and more like another backslapping-fest for our friends at the majors, happy to be able to plug their ever draining bottom line one more year as their physical sales continue to plummet, their digital sales under perform and mobile revenue for overpriced ringtones goes dry. Who is the winner here? Certainly not the fan, or even the music buyer. And certainly not the musicians who have signed deals where their cut from this kind of revenue remains cloudy at best. Have you heard anyone, any music fan, excited that MySpace Music is coming? I haven’t. And I’m not hopeful. Let’s revisit in a week. [...]

Valuation in this media space, value of users x number of users.
According to Nielsen, 19 million users when News Corp purchased MySpace for $580 million. MySpace paid about $30/user. MySpace now has 183 million members. According to Murdoch, MySpace could now be sold for $6 Billion -- about 10x return on the original $580 investment of two years ago. That's at far less a per user price than Yahoo's $1B offer to Facebook at $110 per user.
