Japan has very good exposure to the internet and they are doing great in their own space. My only problem is that some of the companies are very hesitant about getting exposure in other countries. Most of their applications have only Japanese versions and that makes it difficult to get worldwide recognition

myfavz.com could be of interest to you. It is a new startup launched on sept 8th at the tc50 demopit. It is a social shopping portal with a unique patent pending feature called pKaboo!
pKaboo! enables gift givers to anonymously find out the recipient's current interests, hobbies or perfect gift ideas. The giver's identity is disclosed to the recipient by myfavz on the day of the event, thus maintaning the element of surprise which is so crucial to the ritual of gifting.
Let me know your views on myfavz

As if Asia needs "tech crunch" to validate its startups.

Everybody knows that Korea lead the broadband scene years ahead of everyone with unique new things coming there, they just don't think TC is important, heck, TC is only available in english to begin with

In Japan that new style of barcode is prevalent. (It looks something like a weird pixelated snowflake image.) Users can interact or gain further information about something by taking a photo of it with their phone. The approach by Tonchidot seems like the next generation of this technology. Since phones are connected to the Internet, couldn't Tonchidot work just by assigning a code to each photo (along with GPS coordinates,) and scanning it for certain matches, in order to recognize the image? It's a complicated system, but I don't see it as impossible.
