You bring up a good point. Perhaps me-trics should educate their users by letting them know that correlation is just an alert of a place to start looking for a cause. The use could then try some experiments to see if it is the cause of the tracked
variable (”try cutting this our of your day and see if the problem goes away”).

The real problem with this approach is that it fundamentally misunderstands statistics. ‘Correlation is not causation.’

On the one hand, who cares? If people find correlations, and that makes them feel better, then it’s a placebo effect but it works! On the other hand, I’m guessing many users will be turned off when they act on spurious correlations and find out it has no effect whatsoever.

I liked today’s panel right before lunch, but yesterday’s was more exciting to me. I thought Marc was cool and honest and of course, Roelof rocks.

One comment on Me-trics: My former CTO had the same idea about 9 months ago and has been blazing on it for awhile. I guess good ideas are worth proving out the need. His gig is Zealog http://www.zealog.com or @zealog on Twitter.
