As several Geni.com members have recently pointed out, the Quote from Noah Tutek of Geni is no longer true. Geni has reversed its course and broken its promise to its most ardent and faithful users. The site for all intents and purposes is no longer true to its original mission statement and has drastically reduced what the software can do even for its Pro, premium paid service. This was done after Geni told its forum members that the core basic product would always remain free even after they introduced their Pro service. The downgrading and taking away of core services began with the Pro rollout.

When I joined Geni about 18 months ago all features were free. You could see how you were connected to anyone no matter how far back or remotely connected it might be. This was a huge selling point for those really interested in genealogy. You could make your tree as big as you wanted, add photos and video, plus work collaboratively with other family members simultaneously on your tree. Geni provided other social networking pieces as well to keep the family working together and having fun doing it.

During this start-up period up to maybe 6 months or so ago large trees were being built, an earlier post said that largest tree was 35, 0000...way too low a figure. There were trees in the hundreds of thousands. Merging came on-line and now the largest connected tree is nearly 9,000,000 strong. Problem is when merging started fundamental design flaws began to deteriorate service, so Geni has heavily scaled back what users can do and see in their own trees. You can now only really see and receive information on family out to 3rd cousins. That functionality may work for those families who only want the social aspects of the site, but for genealogist this is a deal killer.

Geni in one fell swoop went from being the genealogy software with the most promise and sophistication to rapidly becoming useless. This is so disappointing and upsetting because many if us until these last restrictions, heartily recommended Geni to everyone and now we are embarrassed and apologizing to those we brought on board.

I can only hope Geni regains it focus and reverts to its original mission statement and goals. Of all the products in this market, Geni no doubt HAD the most features and promise of all.

Noah said "Unlike other sites, Geni.com is completely free, and does not place a limit on how large your tree can grow, how many photos or videos you can upload, or anything else."

It used to be free but recently changes in Geni shows their hidden commercial agenda. Suddenly they change their "free" features to be "premium" features so you have to pay even to see your own data. Suddenly a lot of limits have been introduced, I guess in order to sell the premium membership. Geni sells this as "privacy improvements", but it's actually just a dumbing down of the site.

Who knows what they are going to do ne.xt to make money out of their userbase

You should know better, Noah. My family is limited to 3rd cousins on Geni. Only if I have paid for a "Pro" membership can I even see how I'm related to a 4th cousin, and I'd have to guess that I'm related to them, and push a button before Geni will tell me.

Geni was quite something in the beginning, but you're downgrading the capabilities one time after another, or you start charging for them, despite your promises to do neither.

Good quality site, could be a good acquisition for someone looking to enter the space or add features.

Ancestry is still very much for hard code genealogists only and has not taken this to the masses. The masses are not interested in the 1930 census or obscure newspaper and obituary databases. That's why sites like myheritage and geni are able to grow so quickly; they're about the family and not solitary genealogy research. Ancestry's making money but it has been going for 10 years and its current growth is flat, they've recently cannibalized their rootsweb.com property into the Ancestry.com domain to try to give the illusion of growth in traffic, but the end result is weaker than ancestry and rootsweb were separately. Ancestry is a good hard-core genealogy website but not more than that.

John, try the new face recognition stuff they just put up on the site. It's the real deal of automatic photo tagging and facial search, and certainly no gimmick.

Comscore data shows that MyHeritage is more than 7x the size of Geni in unique visitors. Google Trends or Alexa are the wrong tools to use in this case because MyHeritage has 20 different domains (myheritage.com, myheritage.es, myheritage.cn and many more) and you've been looking at just one of them (MyHeritage.com) instead of an aggregation of all 20, which Comscore provides. With new domains added every month, MyHeritage.com is constantly having portions of its traffic shift over to other domains so when myheritage.com is showing minor growth, the site as a whole is experiencing tremendous growth.

Geni is growing faster and Ancestry has double the traffic...

I think that "hard core genealogists" make up only a small portion of the users. What Ancestry has done so brilliantly is to bring this to the 'masses' so anyone can feel comfortable to search and find their data.

Myheritage is leading in their SEM/SEO efforts over geni and that is why they are doing so much better in their assault. The demographic both these companies are hitting are heavily dependent on search engines, since they are not avid tech readers and myheritage is kicking ass on all the hot keywords. I think genis service offering is superior but they will lose this battle if they don’t take traditional search marketing seriously.

Agreed. Ancestry.com still dwarfs these startups, in number of trees, names, and dollars in the bank.
