Every couple has its ups and downs, but most people try to keep their dirty laundry to themselves. But what about those times when you just can’t come to an agreement with your significant other?
Today sees the launch of SideTaker a site that asks couples to upload both sides of their arguments and let the crowd settle their debates. SideTaker members can vote on which side they agree with, or leave comments to ask for further details or voice their opinions.
The site is hilarious. Disputes range from cheating spouses to toilet flushing, oftentimes filled with more detail than anyone would want to know.
A part of me can’t believe that it’s real – how many couples would actually turn to the web to resolve a private matter? But shows like Jerry Springer and Judge Judy have thrived on this sort of thing for years, so there’s definitely a large audience. And while it may sound ridiculous, there may be a significant demand for text-based dispute resolution. Even if people ignore the comments of others, it’s possible that they’ll be more honest on paper than if they were speaking face to face.

Couples should vent their disputes in the privacy of their own home. I’ll leave this app to the Jerry Springer wannabes.
agree
Bomb.
no normal would person would use this – only gays, and weird couples.
but even then, if a couple breaks up…well, they breakup. and for this to work, both parties have to be willing to still ‘communicate’ in this open forum
I’m not using the site, so there goes your in-depth analysis of the site’s patrons.
@lawrence
“no normal would person would use this – only gays, and weird couples.”
Because gays aren’t normal a**hole? Don’t be such an ignorant prick.
I didn’t mean “normal” people like that…i said normal in regards to the general masses – not the minorities like gays, and weird people
chill
I can tell somebody was paid to make these up(same person, both sides). Still, they’re pretty funny.
Hahah hilarious. Well done.
Oh
my
god.
What’s next?
this promises to be one of the most entertaining sites of the web 2.0 era… my best is we will see the next set of stars rise from here! not
This is retarded.
FASCINATING!
this is owsome
, ROFL
I mean I would really track the user base of this site, This should be taken with a pinch of salt and yeh not flushing toilet, wet towel on bed kinda disputes will be interesting to read.
I’ll link this to all my couple friends, so I have all the updates..
GAAAAAA, web 2.0 in bedrooms and toilets now
err thickbox for login
This is a brilliant idea.
Excellent entertainment value!
) Makes business sense…
I see a small upside though: after the breakup (which would be pretty sure- because if they didn’t fix it personally and had to take it to a jury of non-peers, they are not being smart enough), couples might learn what was annoying to the other party (may not need fixing, just a realization of another person’s likes and dislikes).
Hey, if enough people watch Judge Judy, what’s wrong with this start up’s concept? Thanks for putting it up on TechCrunch
Happened to be my brilliant idea, actually. 2 years ago. Was called NetRuling.com. I’ve got more important things to focus on now, so I don’t even have it running right now. I don’t think they can make it sustainable, but if they can, good for them.
Oh!!! My marriage is saved thanks to great advice from proven counselors !!! The fact that they refer to themselves as “BobsAppleBottom”, “chickssuk”, and “MtJellyRoll” makes them even more credible !!!
This site is better than any best friend !
Seriously though, as a business idea, it’s a fine one. At least it’s legal.
My experience with NetRuling was that most people saw it as a novelty, but not something they’d come back to again and again. And it does quickly devolve into Jerry-Springer-esque stuff. Most of the people who like that would prefer to watch it on TV. Much better ad rates there, too.
So ultimately, imitation being the sincerest form of flattery and all, I am flattered, but I highly doubt this will last.
I built a site rather similar to this but the liability insurance was astronomical so it didn’t get off the ground.
when my wife is throwing the plates (she actually doesn’t) how the heck I will tell her … hey please wait a minute letme upload the dispute and after the voting you can continue throwing the plates
… I dont know may I will use it if I see a knife in her hands.
Styling is messed up (the August, 2006 snapshot even worse), but here you go:
http://web.arch.../netruling.com/
A more appropriate domain name would be Relationship-Ender.com
This is hilarious – Day time television meets web 2.0
I like the content the users added to the site, and in general it looks like a good job was done there, really liked “his tags” and “her tags” nice to see both parties view on the matter.
Though im missing a good discussion features there.
In http://www.AllRise.com (which is similar in some aspects) a bigger focus was made just on the discussion, but i guess these are different views on public disputes.
I disagree with most of the comments here. I don’t watch the shows mentioned and I don’t have much of a use for the site, but I think it’s a very good concept and it could be pretty successful.
If people use it to sledge each other over huge issues such as cheating then it’s nothing more than Jerry Springer and only the lowest common denominator will end up using it for their own internal wars. However, if it’s used to get a crowds opinion on issues which bother/annoy someone but aren’t going to determine the outcome of their relationship, then you have a platform for helping people realise they’re being unfair or selfish, etc. and there’s a good chance they’ll chance the habit if they see that others think they’re wrong.
I definitely think it could work but the audience who pick it up will dictate its outcome.
Sounds good . There is a great new start-up that just came out . It is all self serve and it is also fully automated . It supports all types text ads, banners and video ads.For publishers , it offers the highest split of earnings you can find out there and much more. It caters to web and mobile Publishers and Advertisers . Web and Mobile Publishers can earn money easier than ever and registering is FREE. Please check it out : http://www.webmob-ad.com
I think it will only work if there are video disputes. That would actually be kind of fun. Maybe I’ll try to find something my girlfriend and I disagree on and post it, hehe.
“Maybe I’ll try to find something my girlfriend and I disagree on and post it”
If you have to “try” to find something that you guys disagree on… then you may not have a “relationship”
But again, who knows? your girlfriend could be the silent [inflatable] kind…
We’re a 2nd generation financial community that just hit our 1,000,000th visitor for the year (http://blog.ago...s-for-the-year/ ) and turning 7 digit profits WITHOUT $1 of advertising revenue. We sponsored TC40 last year, spoke with Mike directly, called him 5 times … and still can’t get someone at TC to cover our story.
I had no problem with this until I saw this dumb a$$ story about an online Jerry Springer site with no hope in hell of turning a dollar in profit.
Pretty sad state of reporting affairs when real Web 2.0 companies with real customers, revenues, profits and traffic take a back seat to these kinds of stories.
George
It should have less of a male-female, relationship-type theme. Not getting all pro gay here just feel like this should be more neutral looking to include political discussions too or, like, those involving to roommates.
I wonder if they can parlay this into some sort of online dating/matchmaking model? Though I dunno if you can really take the worst sides of people and make a functional dating site out of it.
And for everyone that is coming down on this- I think maybe you are taking your lives too seriously. Sure, this will never get funded and probably won’t even turn a profit, but it’s good for a chuckle, and looks as though its has honest intentions. Smile a bit
Haven’t read all of the comments so someone might have already suggested this very obvious idea, but if they make this video-based (seesmic or whatever) it might actually have legs.
Those “Can this marriage be saved” articles that do this format (his version, her version, the counselor’s version) are very popular. But then again so is Jerry Springer. Jer-ry! Jer-ry!
the site is cool, 12 dollars a post after the first is ridiculous. this should be free
Apparently you get a free one if you verify within 6 hours but I have not received the verification email to my gmail account. Something seems fishy.
