Getting on top of Digg via paid methods was available easily till about 3 months ago. I guess Digg got wind of the business and have put some of these people advertising on Google out of business. Maybe they'll be back.

Digg is pathetically easy to game. In under one week I have built a friend list with msaleem, MBM, and many of the other top power users. Also, if you proceduralize your approach, you can spend like 20-30 minutes a day on digg. Say you pair with your brother and friend, now you are committing at most 2 hours a week to digg and have such a stronghold over content distribution. The key is to take a very procedural approach and have a game plan.

I think they (Digg) might use google's ads model, where left are natural diggs and right are paid diggs, and if Digg pay their own users to do the job (as they digg anyway) the commercial companies who want their stories on a front page - and also willing to pay for it, won't need the services of companies like subvertandprofit.com anymore.

@Loc, I believe AdWords system would detect it and neutralise those clicks. AdWords system would concider them as illegal.... although I also believe some competitors can do nasty things sometimes. It all depends who your enemies are and what's in the game. :)

My personal take on that stuff, is that it's waste of time trying to (I mean in general) send your competitor broke, as it doesn't give your own business more quality! And above of all, there will always come new competitors, so it just doesn't make sense to chase your own tail. Being better then your competitors - by offering better products and services - on the other hand does!

Just an opinion... which is b.t.w. far away off topic. ;-)
