I have been on the phone with AT&T for hours over the past few days because my visual voicemail has been out. It appears I lost visual voicemail on 8/24 but didn’t realize it at the time. The first three calls I put into AT&T they blamed Apple, Apple promptly told me the issue was AT&T. On the fifth call to AT&T I was advised that AT&T has an outage affecting data and visual voicemail (which is delivered via the data connection) which “started on or before 8/31″ they told me they think the issue started days before that but in their words “they aren’t sure because people only started complaining on 8/31″. AT&T was unable to advise as to when the service will be back up and running.

It’s not just today – I’ve had slow speed on the 3G since day 1 north of Boston and calling the support line is just useless.

I had some issues getting data this morning, around 10am in Boston..couldn’t get email, connect to any apps that required a connection. All fine now.

BlackBerry email doesn’t use a typical TCP/IP Data connection so it was not apparently affected …

Mike – you using BlackBerry?

From what I am reading this was a serious outage that was caused by some routing problem in the NorthEast (as also mentioned earlier in this post).

I had issues with my ATT Windows Mobile phone’s access to email (Exchange and Gmail) since about 3am and 11am in New York City.

Could this issue affecting iPhones really just be ATT’s whole data network?

What was weird was I could surf the web on the browser but none of my data apps could get a connection (email and some other random apps I use).

My phone and data have both been out all day. AT&T blamed it on the UMTS data problem. Has anyone experiencing these outages been able to use the phone? I get a “no service” message for the phone.

Wow, so I’m not alone. Had the problem in DC and thought I was just in a bad cell. Turned off 3G hoping maybe Edge would work but same problem. Eventually got my email about 12:45 in one big dose, but wasn’t able to use Pandora or AOL Radio or other functions until much later.

Lately I have been contemplating a separate data plan for laptop, looks like I’ll go with Verizon on this one.
