The Android Blog is reporting that Google has officially announced the Android Market, an App Store like solution that allows publishers to upload programs and sell them online.
Developers will be able to make their content available on an open service hosted by Google that features a feedback and rating system similar to YouTube. We chose the term “market” rather than “store” because we feel that developers should have an open and unobstructed environment to make their content available. Similar to YouTube, content can debut in the marketplace after only three simple steps: register as a merchant, upload and describe your content and publish it. We also intend to provide developers with a useful dashboard and analytics to help drive their business and ultimately improve their offerings.

“open” as in open to maliciously brick the phone?
It will take one virus and this marketplace will be controlled.
are google the new microsoft, lets follow apple ?
i’m excited about the possibilities, but that’s pretty hideous.
Google’s worse at copying Apple than Microsoft ever was! Truly pathetic.
The Android app store will not be controlled by Google. Write a cool Android app, put it up, no restrictions, it’s immediately available worldwide to everyone…UNLIKE the iPhone app store.
Todd, you’re truly gullible and naive if you believe that. All it will take is ONE VIRUS and the market will be controlled. Mark my words!
looks interesting but also looks like sick on a plate
What about security? How are apps trusted so that they don’t just wipe your phone, steal your contacts etc…
sooo…they’re supposed to NOT make money? Hopefully someone comes up with a single store to get apps for all these platforms.

Guys, another self serving comment. Please go to http://www.getjar.com. The “single store” is already there.
You know, I was interested and then I went to your site….
Using sex to sell onlline apps is classless and turns those of us with disposable income off immediately
The org of the site sucks and reminds me of the 2000. It screams scammy, and relies on impulse, i would imagine. Have you learned nothing from apple or google, or many of the great services/companies around on the web these days?
In short, pathetic…
As much as this is a copy, its needed
I wonder if Android is poised to become the next big gaming platform. Most of the top apps on the Apple app store are games. This might translate to the Anrdoid Market as well.
I love the people complaining about Google copying Apple here. As if no company can ever possibly distribute in the same manner.
Oh noes! Every e-commerce retailer is just copying Amazon for shame! How dare they enter this market already occupied by Amazon.
Awesome for Android. Amazing development.

Everyone makes it sound like Apple invented the mobile app store. Handango and a few others have been around for much longer. Palm has an open app community. I haven’t heard of any bricked Treos. I’m sure Android phones will survive. I’m willing to suffer a few resets to have open software.
Yes, and at least Google is opening Android to third party distribution, so we call all jump in. It would be nice if Apple did this….
If the platform principles work, why wouldn’t Google emulate Apple’s App Store?
Are people unaware of Google’s history of making things that don’t always look great but tend to always work great?
yeah like Google Video…
I can’t wait to start using it….:-)
At least Google is being more progressive.
On the other hand. The name “android market” sounds like something way, way cooler than a store for phone apps.
“Yes. I’ll take an Interrodroid 6000, please!”
I am starting to put together some slides to pitch a VC. What Apps should I build on Android? Any suggestions?
Perhaps you were only kidding, but shouldn’t you first plan the apps that you’d build before you start putting together slides for them?
thank god someone said it, lol
while the app store may prevent things like virus’s etc, i have to say, my iphone 3g battery life reduces by at least 50% if i run any apps on it…
Are you implying that the App Store is to blame for poor battery life on the iPhone 3G because of the 3rd party applications you run?
i dont think the app store is too blame, but it is not holy grail…
I see bloodbath between google and apple… in my opinion in few years the mobile platform is going to evolve to a new level.
Is that why google’s ceo sita on apple’s board? Are you sure? Do you predict markets correctly often?
This is awesome. Good job Google.
google on a mission
And suddenly Apple is hailed as the inventor of the app repository…
Believe me, later we will have an evil desktop OS that will only allow users to install application for official store.
haha Pathetic. Google sucks.
I know this is somewhat self-serving, but I thought a number of you would also be interested in knowing about Getjar, which gets about 13 million free mobile app downloads/month (java, symbian, win mobile, etc) will be opening an Android area next month. This will give Android developers even more exposure to a worldwide market, that’s already flourishing. Stay tuned!
how many self serving posts are you going to make in this one news article there asshat?
I think I hate TechCrunch readers. I should stop coming to this site.
I hate everyone. Think of how I feel!
Please, please include a model for try/buy, I hate the Apple appstore right now because you can’t find out that applications suck until after you buy them. For those non-iPhone users out there, imagine disappointed you would be with 99% of Facebook apps if you had to pay for them before you could use them.
As you may expect, Google may not release just appstore. They might differentiate little bit with apple appstore by providing API’s for ads.May be more revenue if developer distributes the app through their appstore than a 3rd party distribution.
Am I the only one who thinks that this interface looks like s**t.
I have always wondered why open source projects have *never* UI designers on board.
(As it is still vaporeware, I can only judge what I see: pictures from PR)
For a (sur)really funny experience find out your Human Hybrid @ http://www.TheHumanHybrid.com
Apple’s App Store (or marketplace, whatever) works because there is already a large user base who utilize the actual platform (iPhone and iPod Touch).
Google has no platform and no real user base. But hey it’s Google, so I’m sure it’ll stay in BETA for about 10 years anyway, so who really cares?
I do not understand where is the Openness in Apples App store decision, the shit that Apple is doing with maintaining strict control on what comes and what goes out to Iphone shall be only via Apple App store is SAME as what Telco did with close walled garden approach.
I am not promoting Google Android or Android App store but atleast Google the copy cat is more open to allow people like us who develop applications for different mobile OS/terminals to be part of the echo system without TOO MUCH control.
This is also a proof that 3rd party Apps is a sustainable business and reality now for mobile applications and games developers.
