Google Earth is getting a nice plug from Olympic Gold Medal cyclist Kristin Armstrong. When she did her time trials in December, 2007 in China, she took along her husband’s GPS unit to capture the elevation along the route. Then she used that data to find the best training route back home. In a guest post on the Google Lat-Long blog, she writes:
After returning home to Boise, Idaho, I exported the GPS data to several different formats, one of which I was able to launch with Google Earth. I was then able to trace the entire course from the comfort of my home half a world away and find a similar route to train on back in Boise. This capability along with having the elevation profile proved invaluable in my preparation for my Gold Medal race.
Google proves that once again, information is a competitive advantage.

Oh snap! I just realized I was looking at a new TC design. Looks tight!
I get it, it’ll create more pageviews. It LOOKS good, but having to click to read a story is annoying
I could not recognize the new design until i saw your comment. I dont really find it better than the last one. May be Micheal would make a post with a poll on this new design Vs old design.
Mebbe v have got so much usedto wd the old design… we find this new one.. odd.
But anyways.. this one is more compact.. one disadvantage .. every time u have to switch to a new page/tab to read the entire post.. well, u can take it the other way.. meaning if u like it u read it or scroll down.. Pros and cons.. different ppl different Opinions..
@topic : Google rox!!
Oops…time to redesign my blog as well
When it was redesigned? i just spent 30 minutes googling and looking trough archives for “new design” post…?
so did the air in her tires. get over it.
You have penis envy. Go make your site better. And, STFU.
Its amazing to see how Google has positioned itself from search; to social network; office suite; google earth; youtube… its becoming a one stop shop content and service.
BTW the new layout looks very neat !!!
That is awesome.
Classic. I’ve only used Google Earth to spy on my neighbors and to look at famous peoples’ houses. Maybe I should rethink how I am harnessing the power of the Internets.
Google Earth is an amazing piece of technology. I actually found a building in a small town in the Philippines Islands
Here is how gmaps didn’t help

WTF? Google Shmoogle. Erick aren’t you tired? Yahoo Mail changed my life for ever because I was able to send an email to my mum about how Erick’s posts suck.
*yawn*
Do we really need another cyclist named Armstrong?
I was on TC, about a few minutes ago – so the new design came as a surprise to me.
Regardless thats a smart way to train!
That is a great plug for Google but how about GPS device manufacturer? What GPS device did she use?
UMapper – http://www.umapper.com
Yeah the GPS device gets no play here? The device is waht gave her the most important info.
good story.
Information is also a competitive advantage – for college students.

Kristin is awesome — If more Olympians did this maybe US would have more gold medals!
I have a Garmin 205 GPS watch that I run with. The data gets exported to a desktop application that pulls up a google map and shows the route I ran, elevation, etc. Pretty sweet if you’re tracking your training progress, but I’d never thought to map out a course by matching elevation, distance, etc. from another. Smart move on her part.
