Despite a weak battery and questions about how fast it connects to 3G networks, some time in the next week more than 6 million iPhone 3Gs will be in people’s hands around the world. What that means is that the second generation device has outsold the original iPhone just seven weeks after going on sale. They actually may already have done so.
It took Apple nearly a year to sell 6 million first generation iPhones. A million 3Gs were sold in the first weekend the device was on sale—it took Apple 74 days to sell a million of the first gen iPhones.
According to our sources, Foxconn continues to build iPhones for Apple at the rate of 800,000 units per week, with production ramping up as fast as possible. (Businesweek is hearing similar numbers from its sources—150,000 a day). Apple is on pace to sell more than 40 million of the devices in the next year. At what point is it no longer considered a niche device in the cell phone world?
The best part is that iPhone App developers who are establishing a position now in the iTunes App store will be be able to ride this growth. Hold on tight.

As one of those developers, all I can say is:
weeee!
BTW… have you guys heard that the new 3G Blackberry Bold is suffering the same 3G connection drops as the iPhone? Everyone thought it was related to the iPhone hardware, but now people are starting to point the finger at AT&T, since the iPhone and the Bold have completely different 3G chipsets.
awesome…now i should start seeing cheap 1st gens on ebay.
hm, do you have anything that actually proves this? I know of people tracking serial numbers, and they are somewhere around 4.5 million as of mid-august, but making phones doesn’t equate with selling them….we have no idea how many are in stores where
Iphone price in India : 31400 INR ~712 $ .
in US, AT&T subsidizes the phone and recoups that amount with the plan…AT&T pays 500-600$ to Apple for a phone. the price in india isn’t 4 times that in US…
That’s pretty close to the unsubsidised price in the US and Europe.
Wow! I’m in awe of Apple Inc.’s marketing strategy.
This is an excellent post . Thanks a lot . I am grateful to you .
Hardware design, OS development, music industry, cell phone industry…Now, I’m really wondering now if Apple can create a beautiful and functional sport sedan that rivals the BMW 3-series. It should get around 45MPG on regular and cost about $40k.
I’d buy it, even the first gen.
Come on Apple…take on the auto industry next.
As long as it doesn’t require that dreadful iTunes app.

I couldn’t be happier with my iphone 2.0

iPhone, Blackberry, Samsung’s Instinct… why not create DEVICECRUNCH a dedicated for new devices and discussions related to devices.
All these make me desperate… I still don’t have iPhone yet.
That is the whole point of posting this
Now, go out and buy one of those bad boys…
apple has a revolutionary product on there hands…

I am not an iPhone user but can admit this is pretty friggin impressive. If I am not mistaken, I think there are somewhere around 30-40 million blackberry’s in operation right now. That means that at 40m for the iPhone, as predicted above, it will soon become the #1 smartphone in the world.
Pretty friggin good for only being on the market less than 2 years.
producing over 100K units a day may degrade build quality, even .05% defects will start to look big and slow down demand (yes/no)?
I just can’t wait for T-mobile’s Google Android phone…
Slow connection due to network, not Iphone itself:

They’re selling it worldwide now. shouldn’t surprise anyone they surpassed the 1.0 numbers
how many of these iphone falls into the black market, smuggled into countries that doesn’t sell iphone?
I’ve been a custmer of AT&T Wireless since before the merger when it was still called Cingular. I’ve had a Motorola RAZR, a Samsung Blackjack, Blackjack II and now a 3G iPhone. The issues I’ve been reading about with the iPhone and 3G problems are not new. I had the same problems with both Blackjacks. The AT&T network even had problems dealing with Daylight Saving Time.
I have the some coverage issues with the iPhone, but they are greatly reduce. My experience strongly suggests that the blame lies with AT&T, not Apple.
If the iphone is the Jesus phone, then Google Phone is THE GOD PHONE. Bring it on!

As an original 1984 Mac developer, I’m cheering for the iPhone. Whether the iPhone, iPod, or iClone like Android, WAP is dead. Long live web 2.0.
I’m having problems with my iPhone after the 2.0.2 update. I’m showing full bars and 3G connectivity, but get a “server stopped responding” error in safari… anyone else have this problem?
So then it sounds like Apple will (or have) hit their projected 10 million iPhone mark well before the end of this year.
Yes?
The only reason I ask is because I have some people I know that told me it was never going to happen. I have some schadenfreude to partake in.
If I were a developer, I think I know exactly what I would be working on. I was surprised when it sold 1 million in the first weekend, but I think the price drop obviously played a huge part in it. As many have pointed out the monthly fees went up, but, when you spread a few hundred dollars out over the span of a few years, it doesn’t seem as hard to digest.

800,000 units per week! Cool! So keep!
where is the data to back up the 6M units, beyond the speculation of increased supply production?
Right, so we’re basing this figure on production numbers, not recorded sales volume and we’re then extrapolating this figure in a linear fashion throughout the year despite the fact we know that’s not actually how it works.
Excuse me a second whilst I piss myself laughing at your understanding of demand curves.
P.S. You do realise when O2 dropped their prices for the iPhone v1.0 that they were flogging iPhones that had been in stock for months, right? Production =/= sales.
….which makes my 1st gen iphone a limited edition phone!
…and makes you a douchebag.
Hi
A bit of relief. Now airtel is providing option of EMI to buy iPhone (www.airtel.in/iphone3g). At least, now people who were expecting to be in range of 16-20K can think again to buy it with EMI option. What you say guys? Can we hope to get its price down in future as well?
Hitesh
Perhaps it is to you, it does do email very well. However I need the bigger screen of the iPhone, and there is no better phone web browser than safari right now. BB sucks at web
