@ChiragPinjar - those aren't actually unrefreshed pixels - they are the "point cloud" representing the 3-d points that photosynth has reconstructed from the photographs. You can cycle through the three views: "photos+pointcloud", "pointcloud-only", and "photos-only" by pressing the 'P' button.

First of all, Linux users now comprise nearly 2% of desktop users. Waste of time? Only if you consider 20+ million people insignificant (that's roughly the population of Australia).

It's understandable that Microsoft isn't building a Linux version, but it has nothing to do with how many non-Windows users there are. (If they really cared, they would start paying attention to the TWENTY PERCENT of Internet users that browse the web with Firefox.)

No Mac version?

It says: "We really wish we had a version of Photosynth that worked cross platform, but for now it only runs on Windows."

Fuk this. This is pathetic.

I am a big fan of Techcrunch, which from my experience provides the best source of information on Internet businesses. I have learned tremendously from reading Techcrunch’s thoughtful, well researched articles about new technologies and companies. But more and more, Techcrunch’s articles sound like they are written by insecure, cynical high school students who are desperate to prove how cool they are (Apple=cool; Microsoft=lame). Perhaps I am just getting too old, but I can’t understand the mindset of people who base their self worth on their mobile phone or operating system, nor am I interested in reading technology news that is driven by this agenda. Photosynth appears to be innovative, exciting, free technology that has many potential applications. I would have liked to have read a Techcrunch article that treated it as such (I ended up reading about Photosyth on other blogs, e.g. David Pogue’s discussion in the New York Times). I suspect that if Techcrunch’s editorial bias continues, then many readers will begin to turn elsewhere.

Given the way that Microsoft works internally, I imagine they really didn't expect that much of a server load on launch day. Instead of denoting them as failing optimisitcally, consider that each team at Microsoft essentially works like a startup and the really nice part is how fast they got the upgrades they needed.

I would rather have a group of enthusiastic developers doing all they can to make sure everything gets working again than a suit and tie like group who apologizes profusely and rectifies the situation in a week.

please refrain from ridiculing people over small points. In essence my point was that the complexity of reconstructing a 3d scene from a huge set of photographs is more complicated than storing an index. Yes i realize that creating a large scale search engine has many engineering complexities, but from a computational perspective it is really not much more complicated ... why don't you read the paper on the google file system, BigTable and MapReduce. All of these are simple concepts.

I think I see what is happening here. Using simple cryptography from the British Enigma machine, I was able to cross out letters from "PHOTOSYNTH" and "MONTY PYTHON" leaving only "SHMYN" or reorganized as "MS YH N". Clearly a message meaning the MSFT-Yahoo merger will never happen. Case closed.

It's clear you didn't install nor test the product.

There is a lot of local computation going on and the requirements on the desktop side are also modern. DirectX7 video graphics card e.g. is essential.

[open]
But you are correct, Microsoft never really released a new concept, except for a talking paperclip.

Google got the jump with Google Earth, but Microsoft is really jumping ahead now with Photosynth. I think this will be huge in the coming years.

Server failure or not, congratulations to them for creating such a wonderful piece of technology!
