The only reason ASCAP, BMI and the like exist was the inability of artists to coordinate individual performance contracts with every person/station playing their work.

With the advent of the internet, and thus the ability to sell to millions (or billions) of people and businesses with very little investment, this licensing conundrum is solved. Artists should simply have differing levels of use agreements that would of course have differing levels of play usage.

For example: ABC Band sells their new album to individuals for $10, but for $50, you can play it on the radio.

Band B, which is much more successful can sell their individual cd for $18 and the radio version for $1,000, or whatever the radio market determines is reasonable.

This also solves the problem of which artist gets how much of the ASCAP fee. The market will set the fees, and everyone gets paid what the market determines, as it should be.

I'm open to suggestions for any refinement of this plan.

The term is Martyr, not "sacrificial lamb."
A sacrificial lamb is something you kill (destroy, or end) in order to please (keep happy, or make more money for) the gods (music labels?)... Clearly not what your post is saying.
You're saying that Pandora may become our Martyr for the greater good.
A Martyr is someone (pandora) who kills itself, or puts itself in harms way (saying they won't pay the exorbitant, and end their service), in order to do a greater good (showing that what the music industry is doing is wrong.)

Yup.

Sadly, it may just be Pandora that has to go. But...with the massive rise of .fm sites popping up on a daily basis, there's certainly no lack of music. The way I see it, Pandora is just another head of the Napster hydra, and until the music industry figures out a more permanent solution *cough* iTunes *cough*, they're bound to just keep cutting heads, only to have 5 more sprout up.

Hey iTunes, Why don't you just buy Pandora already and turn them into the iTunes music station. I've purchased several songs from iTunes through finding out about artists on Pandora.

Your suggestion tool is shit compared to the Pandora player. Do it the right way. Sales will increase, as well as impressions and time spent on your player.

Word to your motherboard,
Brent
