This post isn't correct and most of the twitterers are wrong too about the timing here. Phelps' swim WAS LIVE on NBC. This Olympics, unlike most others and most swim meets in general, had the finals in the morning, usually from about 10am with the last one ending at about noon. That meant that due to the time zones with Beijing 12 hours ahead of EDT all of the swimming finals shown on NBC were shown live.

What the twitter comments actually seem to be complaining about are the results of the Men's 100m track and field race which was won by Bolt. That was tape delayed because it was contested in the evening Beijing time so early morning EDT. Thus the people subscribed did get a spoiler on that but couldn't have gotten a spoiler at 11:14pmEDT about the Phelps swim since that tweet went out about a minute or two after the swim finished live on NBC.

Why on earth should CNN *NOT* show news from the Olympics? Because Americans are sleeping?

This is more a case of stupid programming on American networks, where they don't send events live. Here in Europe all tv-stations have live broadcasts all throught the night, with reruns in the morning.

I'm not from the US and i use twitter and follow CNN. I think CNN's duty is to inform and like the way they do it via twitter and all. If the olympics are not live in the US that's not CNN's fault at all. Go and talk to NBC that seems to not broadcast anything. I live in South America and here we got the olympics live via Internet when not having them on TV, a true collaboration between 2 companies to bring the event to viewers at all times.

Seems, like NBC is failing to bring LIVE content in an era where we information flow quickly....live is the slowest we will like our information.

Sad to say, the USA has the worst Olympic coverage in the developed world.

Really? You've spent a dozen hours or so reviewing all of the broadcasts from around the world? That's quite an accomplishment.

Webgurl85 here. Really cool my tweet made techcrunch! My tweet to CNN was a classic case of shooting the messenger. I of course want the news as it comes, but i want to see it as it comes too! For some reason I thought that Phelps' race would be important enough that they wouldn't time delay it. I watched 2.5 hours of tedious marathon running trying not to fall asleep and miss him! Then I got spoiled.. All I want is live TV, is that too much to ask for!

This just proves that NBC does NOT get social media.

If NBC would have lived up to it's slogan of LIVE coverage, people would have changed their plans and watched Phelps HISTORIC win ;) I would have for sure.

CNN did it's job, presenting Phelps 8th gold win LIVE. NBC screwed up for GREED. I don't hear NBC crying - they got their cash.

- Did the WORLD delay televising the 1st moon landing?
- Did the news networks delay showing the start or the Afghanistan or Iraq wars?
- Will NBC, ABC, CBS let alone CNN delay the presidential results let alone the swearing in ceremony?

If you don't want to get the news as it breaks in real-time then don't follow anyone on Twitter.

BTW, NBC thanks for Prime Time coverage aka marketing BS because I already knew that Guo Jingjing already won the gold and you're only showing it now - duhhhhh

This just proves that NBC does NOT get social media.

If NBC would have lived up to it’s slogan of LIVE coverage, people would have changed their plans and watched Phelps HISTORIC win I would have for sure.

CNN did it’s job, presenting Phelps 8th gold win LIVE. NBC screwed up for GREED. I don’t hear NBC crying – they got their cash.

- Did the WORLD delay televising the 1st moon landing?
- Did the news networks delay showing the start or the Afghanistan or Iraq wars?
- Will NBC, ABC, CBS let alone CNN delay the presidential results let alone the swearing in ceremony?

If you don’t want to get the news as it breaks in real-time then don’t follow anyone on Twitter.

That is a special kind of stupid. It's really charming that some of the idiots included their own pictures for their avatars. It's like a special idiot identity card project. Note: If you see this person on the street, walk in the other direction. The stupid may be contagious.

But all of Phelps's swims were carried live on the East Coast. They weren't tape-delayed by hours for most Americans. Just those on the west coast. As far as the swimwear, Phelps doesn't wear the most advanced technology that most others do. He won without that advantage. He is, indeed, the greatest Olympian ever.

CNN has been spoiling all week on their @CNN tweet. I just stopped reading twitter, Yahoo! front page, etc., because I knew they were delaying stuff on the West Coast. CNN ruined the first Lezak miracle for me though.
