Twitter: The Micro-Blogging tool that has taken the web by storm. How great it is to keep your associates informed and uptodate on your activities, movements and intentions – nicely packaged up semi-anonymously. Twitter is becoming a tool of choice for sharing knowledge, collaborating and working towards a common goal. But not necessarily for business, according to the US Army, as reported Breitbart.com.

I like Twitter as a business tool as it is a quick and simple way of disseminating news, views and updates – it creates personal presence which enables me to build closer relationships with colleagues and customers. Twitter, like LinkedIn, Facebook, etc builds up my external profile and personal brand. These tools also enable and promote activism, where users band together, often behind a united cause such as influencing the taste of Coke or improving cellphone services. Is it a potential tool for terrorists? Well, I guess if activism behind extreme causes is just as likely – these tools aren’t politically astute, unless we make them that way. The usual method is monitoring. Like phone-tapping, email snooping, etc. I expect Twitter is monitored. How do you feel about that?

It wasn’t that long ago that I considered the effect of social platforms inside an organization and that company-wide activism and socialism can take effect unless policies or rules are put in place. How is this different in the wider world? I don’t think it is, unfortunately. Is the price of freedom of speech the necessity to monitor?

[...] Twitter’s Secret Weapon: Audience — How is Twitter able to maintain such a large, loyal audience despite persistent service outages? TechCrunch’s Gregor Hochmuth argues that the mini-blogging service reaches a wide variety of users who would never dream of starting a blog or using an RSS reader. There’s also something about releasing a tweet and knowing your friends will receive it-even if it doesn’t exactly work that way (in actual fact, anyone who wants to can follow you on Twitter, whether that person is your friend or not). But from a user’s perspective, those receiving your messages are people you know, people who care enough to “follow” you. This, Hochmuth says, is the secret to Twitter’s success: The moment you send a message, not only do you have an idea about who’s receiving your message, you also know exactly who’s online and capable of responding to your message instantly.
Dear Gregor,

Your analysis on the power of audience that Twitter offers is very useful and interesting to follow.

I have 2 points to discuss below:

1. I agree with you that the uncertainty with Facebook newsfeed is a gap to get full power of audience from the point of view of a publisher. However, Facebook offers RSS to one's feed, and this aggregates full contents. It can be assumed that most people who are tech-savvy enough to use Twitter are familiar with using RSS.

Do you think that Facebook also offers full power of audience, though not in a direct and intuitive way as Twitter does?

2. The human factor: If an intended recipient ignores the sender's tweet or does not read it on time as the sender expects, full power of audience hasn't been fulfilled. Therefore, we can say that Twitter better defines audience than a blog does, but it is still not 100% perfect of audience.

Regards,
TaiTran
