I hate that people call ChaCha a new kind of search engine or a human powered search engine. There's nothing new about it other than the fact that they added a middle man.

If you're busy taking a dump so you ask your buddy to hop on google for you and find out what time Pizza Hut closes, is your friend suddenly a "new and innovative type of search engine?" No. He's just another person looking something up because you're either too lazy to do it yourself or because you don't have an internet browser on your device, which has turned into the minority in this country since most unlimited packages these days INCLUDE web browsing.

Not to mention people using their handheld's like sony PSPs or walking around with laptops, pdas, all kinds of things. For someone who is broke and only has text messaging on their cell phone, ChaCha can be fun, but is it actually NECESSARY? I doubt it.

How many times do you really NEED an answer to a question while on the go? Most of the answers people seek from ChaCha are nonsense answers that are just used to pass the time, like how big is the largest pair of tits in the world? That's not a necessity.

If you find yourself NEEDING an answer to something ten times a day while on the go, like a phone number or an address, things you should have tried to get BEFORE you left the house, you're probably one of those people who wouldn't know how to survive a day without the most modern technology, like people who say, "But how will I make I phone calls if I don't have a cell?"

Pay phones and landlines ring a bell?

And whoever stated that most people don't have iphones, iphones aren't the only type of mobile device on the planet and most people with mobile devices DO have internet access.

I signed on in Oct to get some extra money for Christmas. As a matter of fact, I'm logged in this very morning as I type this and I've had exactly 2 messages come in in over 2 hours. Since the implementation of this 20 questions per month for users, the chances to earn have decreased tremendously. Add that to the continual glitches in the system, and there's not much chance of getting the quota which is now 200 per week. The feedback is laughable. It's a canned response with no indication of how it could be done easier. This is a supplemental income for me for the holidays. At this rate, I would have made more money hiring a sitter and working at McDonalds for a couple of months!!! What a joke.

You're obviously very new to guiding at chacha and oblivious to what they are doing, and have been doing for quite some time. They are going to an auto answer base so your job is far from secure. For a company that has hyped themselves as a live search engine, they have now limited live searches to 20 per month BUT offer unlimited auto answers. So, for you to brag on a company that's slowly weaning its customers away from live searches, which will eventually completely eliminate your job, is asinine.

Seriously, how hard is it to answer "What's a dirty sanchez?" If I were a guide, I would rather get 100 questions like "does chris love me?" or "what are you wearing" than "what's the distance between the Sun and Earth?" or other tough in-depth scientific questions.

And that is the plan, haven't you all realized? And the sad thing is, it is working. Not only ChaCha has gained more traffic since the paycut, it has achieved even more awards and more recognition nationally.

Personally, when I look at it, ChaCha provides a medium to those of you who wish to work from home. Now they cut your pay in half unless you work enough hours. Well, it's like a hungry man who used to eat only bread and was given steak. Now they downgraded the steak to just a cheeseburger, and you're all crying about that? You know you could try those online survey and secret shopping scams where you have to pay money to get in. Try those first and then tell me ChaCha is a fraud.

What a coincidence, "Cry Me a River" is coming on the radio....

It's unfortunate that ChaCha is angering it's guides who give solid answers but cannot do 300/200 searches a week.

They will likely find thousands of more suckers who will do the "job" for 10 cents a question, discarding previous guides in the trash.

Keep in mind that independent contractors don't get paid the same as actual employees. But it's still money in the bank if I'm not mistaken. Sounds like they are changing the process by having different types of guides, to make it easier to answer questions faster and thus get paid more. Of course, new systems mean new glitches but give them a chance to work it out! I'm sure they wouldn't intentionally screw over their guides. No company hoping to stay in business for long would try to get away with not paying their workers.

I am a guide on chacha and have been since may. I signed on agreeing to 20 cents and they go and cut my pay. Mind you i am doing many searches a week and i know for a fact i am getting great answers for these people and i still am not getting top guide. Fraud if you ask me. also everytime there is a contest where you can make more money just for being on or what ever they have to get more money...the system is having issues...almost every time and the past 5 times in a row the system has been down or some issues occur during contest hours....I think they plan it that way. Good thing i have a real job and that this is just a side thing to make extra money. But seriously the old pay which was 20 cents for all of us to me was like a thank you. Then the pay cut happened and it was like cutting a thank you in half. Sucks.

Apparently you don't understand the concept...ChaCha is made for on-the-go answers, which generally means one doesn't have access to Google. And, if you've tried the GOOG411 feature, you would know that it sucks, and ChaCha can provide answers to specific questions, unlike GOOG411.

Well genius, if you knew about the name, then you would know "Cha" means "search" in Chinese, so it's a perfect name...and I laugh at all of you who thought/think that ChaCha is not going to succeed! We get about 18k+ queries per hour, and the number of guides has grown from about 25k when I started worked at ChaCha HQ to over 33k now (and it's been about 1 1/2 months)...

I am looking for a site that is legit and pays out like chacha. Something that is free to start and easy to do but with a better pay check. ChaCha is getting under my skin!

I have been using ChaCha via text messaging for the last week and am very impressed with the results. For me, it is easier than any mobile search solution (I have a 3G Black Jack and iPhone). I wanted to know about an '04 Tuscan red before I ordered, and while conversing with friends, the answer came back in less than 1 minute. The human touch is also nice, here are some queries with the answers:

Q: Is Halle Barry Single
A: The Oscar winner and her boyfriend, Gabriel Aubry, welcomed a daughter on March 16, 2008. Halle is not single, sorry.

Q: Did the US Men's Team Win The Beach Volleyball Gold
A: The US won the Gold Medal, They Played Awesome

I believe their business model could be tweaked for success:

1. its a mobile search solution that is quick and easy and works on the majority of mobile phones with text message adoption roughly reaching over a 40% active adoption rate in the US, 80%+ with the younger demos

2. they could make it a premium SMS service (either per request or subscription).

I use to work in data services for a major US carrier and you can't under-estimate the ubiquity of SMS and willingness of consumers who bill to phone for on the go services. In 2000, there were many folks who believed that consumers would not pay for text messages, mobile IM, picture messages, or ring tones -- all of which generate billions per year in revenues. The question is how much of the pie the carriers will take from that margin and having enough left over for the company and the guides, and generating enough free-marketing to achieve scale.

I don't work for ChaCha.
