What Are HP, Intel, and Yahoo Announcing Tomorrow?
by Jason Kincaid on July 28, 2008

We just got word that HP, Intel, and Yahoo will be announcing a joint research initiative tomorrow morning. We don’t have any details at the moment, but we’re guessing it will probably have to do with large-scale processing. Leave your own speculation in the comments - the first person with the right guess will get a TechCrunch T-shirt.

Employees from HP, Intel and Yahoo are not eligible to participate. :-)

On-demand scalable web services/platform for cloud computing, similar to S3 or Google’s App Engine

announce tomorrow, launch in 2012

MiddleMarketMillionaire - July 29th, 2008 at 8:09 am PDT

and how does this help get yahoo to $33/share??

idiots

They are announcing a JV between Fiorina and Yang in which Intel powers the relationship

You won a t-shirt!
But Cisco or Level3 Communications may be part of it?

something on Hadoop

Cloud computing?
Mobile me?
Hardware / processor / internet thingie?

They shall call it YIP, it will be a really fast internet experience with computers that require little direct hardware, maybe even hardware as a service?

Yahoo doesn’t have the capability to do cloud computing. Usually, these “partnerships” involve existing technologies.

Something connected with Information Retrieval (search engine, image processing, etc).

I’m guessing time travel.

You already have a t-shirt, Jason. the rest of us gotta make real guesses. :)

Wouldn’t time travel need to include Apple’s time machine?

CUILLLLLLLLLL!!!!!!!

I’m buying yhoo stocks!

I’m guessing: massive distributed computing to identify idiot bloggers, ala SETI@Home.

smartphone

Lack of a mobile carrier. I doubt it

Simple guess is cloud computing

They are merging into a behemoth to be know as HapIntelHoo

tagline… “Phoo Inside”

real name Microsoft, it’s a huge buyot/sellout

I am going with a massive virtual world environment - complete with their patented “Nostril” virtual aroma system. I understand they will be announcing their “RealFeel” immersive touching blanket sytem that will let people virtually “touch & feel” each other next month.

A new venture relating to IMS (IP multimedia subsystem)

probably an inkjet printer with a super fast processor and built in answers? :D

To enable students write exams quickly :)

Both companies are implementing a mandate to employees:

Join Yahoo Kickstart!

Cloud Storage

Green, Cloud Computing

A new mini-computer [bigger than a phone smaller than a laptop].
Look forward to the announcement.
Best.

*Distributed* large-scale processing on personal computers like SETI.

that would be WAY cool (and a business plan thats been in my head for about 6 years).

Give this guy a t-shirt just for a great idea!

HP open cloud platform computer using intel´s atom processor and yahoo services

random guess because I want a t-shirt…

some kind of general artificial intelligence research that can be applied to generic problems like search, voice recognition, etc…

One of those stupid Intel MIDs (Mobile Internet Devices).

Content / Apps (widgets) to be provided by Yahoos!

I am going with something telco, 2 of the companies involved have deals with Jajah, some Yahoo voice client pre-loaded on all HP, I think Intel have an investment or preloaded jajah client

how about some sort of printing standard so that you can print a web page and actually read the content. Implemented by all HP Printers and all Yahoo! properties would get the ball rolling on something we’ve needed for 15 years

Who prints webpages? Paper is dead.

really - i always print long articles rather than read them online. I think I use more paper now than I did 10 years ago

It is something about parallel processing along the lines of cloud computing.

a new phone? or a cheap tablet pc.

I think it is a Calculator which is powered by Intel processor and can access Yahoo! Mail

Energy efficient cloud computing that will give Yahoo the ability to process data at a lower cost than Google. Multi-core Intel chips in HP boxes that provide greater performance per watt than found in other data centers.

Super fast processor chips (Intel) with a very less hardware(Hp) for Yphone, a smartphone platform by Yahoo!

I think Yahoo! will be the default search engine on all PCs which contain Intel processors, starting with HP first.

free nationwide wifi for everyone!

I do not think Yahoo! will switch to expensive HP hardware.
I think HP will deliver a consumer product developed by Yahoo!.

Or they will announce a joint R&D into “cloud printing”, you send your print job into the cloud, and it will print on some stranger’s printer half-way around the world.

I’m thinking they will announce they are working on some sort of video search based on image and audio content.

I got it … it is home entertainment PC/computer built by HP, with Intel hardware, and with yahoo! software.

Yahoo Acquires HP and Intel!

This is just a research project right, not a actual product or service? I think its going to be Large Scale Processing as well.

A public Hadoop cluster.

I think it’ll be some sort of massive distrobuted processing system related to yahoos search & advertising platform (panama i doth believe) …. It’s about time yahoo started focusing on their original business again.

Electric Toaster?

You sir, are a genius!

With Y! Answer powered built-in receipes ?

I submitted the right answer and all i got was this lousy t-shirt. c’mon you techcrunch has to have some better swag.

Cloud computing is my quess.

I would guess that its something to do with cloud/cluster computing. I had heard one of their Director of Engg speak at TieCon08 about it

Yahoo will have a background process preinstalled on HP computers that outsources their search engine processing costs to idle broadband computers, like Folding@Home for web crawling. Their server room costs go to zero and profitability goes high enough they can get that $33 offer on the table again. Would be even better if they made a version for Xbox 360.

Yeah, Cloud Computing to hit Amazon in the ass!

The product they are presenting is ScreamingFog. It combines aspects of recently acquired LoudCloud/Opsware and the screaming cries of Yahoo’s Yang all immersed in the foggy outlook of Intel’s recent performance.

An iPhone app
}(^__)
<3 mandyvan

they are all combining to make a bid for msft.

free online backup service with massive amounts of storage.

Dude, I have no clue.

A new mobile computing / phone that used Yahoo services - to be called the RingYang

Another vote for a cloud computing / grid platform. Intel (chips) + HP (boxes) + Yahoo (first client + sales + dev platform api)

Or, a time machine.

J, http://www.sumolabs.com

They are all going to sign one big deal with Microsoft.

It’s going to be something along the lines of Google’s RE<C. Intel will use its SpectraWatt company to manufacture solar panels for commercial and residential uses. Intel, Yahoo, and HP will then develop the surrounding technology, both software and hardware, to be used to integrate solar with cars and monitor such energy use back and forth between the building and the grid.
